About Our School Our Mission Statement At Bolton Parish Church CE School Christian values are integral to all we do and each individual is welcomed as part of God’s family. We unite in the desire to empower learners to build the academic skills, personal values and mindset to succeed and be- come respected role models within their community. Our School Values At Bolton Parish Church C of E Primary School our school values are central to the Christian ethos of our school. Our values are Love, respect, peace, thankfulness, friendship, responsibility and forgiveness. Children learn how to demonstrate these values through worship and through the curriculum. Curriculum Intent The breadth of our curriculum is designed with three goals in mind: 1. To give pupils appropriate experiences to develop as confident, responsible citi- zens; 2. To provide a rich ‘cultural capital’; 3. To provide a coherent, structured, academic curriculum that leads to sustained mastery for all and a greater depth of understanding for those who are capable. Appropriate experiences We have developed two curriculum drivers that shape our curriculum, bring about the aims and Christian values of our school, and respond to the particular needs of our community: 1. Values – which helps children to understand faith, respect diversity and build com- munity cohesion. 2. Possibilities – which helps pupils to build aspirations and know available possibili- ties for their future lives. Cultural Capital Powerful subject knowledge that gives pupils academic and intellectual ways of thinking, and powerful personal knowledge that gives them the character, disposi- tions, attitudes and habits to navigate their way through life. 2
Meet the Year 2 Team Miss C Norman Miss L Clegg Class Teacher Teaching Assistant A message from your teacher Welcome to Year 2! My name is Miss Norman and I will be the class teacher in Year 2, supported by the amazing Miss Clegg. This will be my second year working at Bolton Parish. Last year, I supported children with interventions and taught lessons across all of the year groups. However, this year I am very excited to be having my own class. Year 2 are incredibly lucky to be the first students at Bolton Parish to experience For- est School sessions on a weekly basis. I hope that this will have a positive impact on their self-esteem and lead to them becoming more self-aware and empathetic indi- viduals. This year we are really increasing the pace and the quality of work that your child will be producing, but I will be here to support them every step of the way. A message from your Key Stage 1 Lead Welcome to Key Stage 1 My name is Mrs Edgington and I am the Key Stage 1 Phase Leader. I am responsible for ensuring that Key Stage 1 is an enjoyable environ- ment that promotes learning and progress for pupils in Year 1 and 2. Partnership with Parents At Bolton Parish Church School we believe a strong school-family relationship can greatly benefit the child as well as parents. It is proven that children do better and achieve more when parents are involved in their progress in school. Concerns can also be sorted out more quickly and successfully when parents and carers feel confi- dent in approaching school with their concerns. Parents also get reassurance that their children are receiving a good education as trust and respect develops with the relationship with the school. In an attempt to strengthen the links with home, school will be offering a range of opportunities for parents to engage in their children’s learning. These will include: Half termly update mornings. Home Learning at Bolton Parish Church School At Bolton Parish Church C of E School we set a range of Home Learning tasks that are designed to ensure that children achieve well and allow parents to support children in their learning. The tasks that we set will develop children’s cultural understanding and will enable them to become knowledgeable about their world. Reading We would like all children to read for at least 15 mins a day. Children in KS1 will be giv- en a reading book. Children in KS2 choose a book from the school library linked to their accelerated reading ZPD. We would like parents to sign the reading record to show that reading has taken place. Times Tables All children will need to practise their times tables at home. We learn all tables to 12x12. Children are regularly assessed on these in school. Cultural Development Tasks Children will be given a different range of cultural development tasks each half term. These may include reading poetry, looking at art or learning about a famous landmark or person. The tasks will progress from basic to deep tasks and children may choose an assortment to complete. Basic – All children need to start with the basic task. This is the task that gives infor- mation needed in order to be able to complete the other tasks. Advanced – These are the tasks where children will start to apply their knowledge from the basic task. Deep – Children apply their knowledge and start to make some decisions about how they will complete the task. Children are free to choose the tasks they want to complete. They may want to com- plete all the basic tasks or all the tasks relating to one subject. They can tick or highlight the tasks on the grid as they complete them. Completed tasks will need to be returned to school by the end of the half term for children to share with others. Please encourage high standards when completing the tasks. If your child usually uses pencil they should complete the task in pencil and the same for those that use pen. Please remember neat handwriting! Other subjects Teachers may sometimes set tasks related to other subjects in school. This may be in order to support preparations for statutory testing or to fill gaps in learning. Each child has a bespoke learning programme which they can access using their Chromebook. They will be supported in school in using these programmes. 12
Curriculum: How we teach the Foundation Curriculum and Science We teach our curriculum through a single subject approach. A high focus is placed on the skills and knowledge used in each subject. These are referred to as the Threshold Concepts. Learning is organised into two year blocks known as Mile- stones. Years 1 and 2 – Milestone 1 Years 3 and 4 – Milestone 2 Years 5 and 6 – Milestone 3 As children progress through the Milestone they will repeat and develop areas of learning; moving from a basic to a deep understanding. This is called mastery. English at Bolton Parish Church CE School: At Bolton Parish Church School we follow a text based approach to learning in English. Pupils in all classes study a range of short stories, novels, poems and non- fiction texts which are used as a basis to teach skills in reading and writing. Children also study additional texts in guided reading and are also encouraged to read texts at home. There are also additional lessons to teach grammar skills and spelling and phonics. Phonics is taught using the Read, Write Inc scheme to all children in EYFS and KS1 and to children in KS2 if this is appropriate. Children are taught handwriting using the Nelson Handwriting scheme. This begins with correct letter formations in EYFS and children are encouraged to begin joining letters from Year 1. All children have a reading book to take home and are expected to read at home each night. 13
How we teach Maths: Maths is taught every day at Bolton Parish Church School. We use a variety of scheme re- sources to develop children’s skills in number, shape, measures and data handling. Children are taught to use a variety of formal written methods for cal- culations as well as developing mental strategies. Children will use practical resources all through school as well as learn- ing how to record their work. There is a focus on learning multiplication tables from year 1 and there is an expectation that most children will know all of the times tables up to 12x12 by the end of year 4. Children are encouraged to apply their mathematical skills in a variety of different contexts and there is a whole school focus on problem solving (reasoning). We teach four main strands of computing: Digital Citizenship, which looks at the safe and responsible use of technology and the internet; Digital Literacy, which covers the purposeful use of technology to create, or- ganise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content; Computer Science, which involves the children learning to code to design, write and debug programs to accomplish specific goals; Information Technology, where we look at uses of technology beyond school, including the internet. Through weekly computing lessons, children will develop their computing skills through practical lessons, and work on projects to practice and further develop the skills they have learned. 16
Religious Education RE lies at the very heart of the curriculum and the Governors adopted the Black- burn Diocesan Board of Education Syllabus as recommended by Manchester Dio- cese which reflects the National framework for RE. The Governors recommend at least 5% of the timetable is devoted to RE. Christianity plays a key role and ac- counts for 80% of the curriculum time. Related units of work about Hinduism, Ju- daism, Islam and Buddhism are also included. Respect for other faiths must be ac- curate and sympathetic, consistent with Bolton Parish Church School’s loyalty to its Christian foundation. At the same time we will promote in all our children the understanding that they have freedom to choose what faith to follow and that will be protected in law. The Aims of RE To promote the school’s agreed Christian values of respect, peace, thankful- ness, friendship, love, responsibility and forgiveness. Think theologically & explore great questions about life, death, meaning & purpose Reflect critically on the truth claims of Christianity. See how the truth of Christianity is relevant today Develop skills to handle Bible text Recognise faith as a commitment to a particular way of understanding God & the world Respond in terms of beliefs, commitments and ways of living Develop a sense of themselves as significant, unique & precious Experience the breadth & variety of Christian Community Engage in thoughtful dialogue with other faiths & traditions Art Children will study and use all of the media listed during the course of the year: Paint, Drawing, Collage, Textiles, Sculpture, Printing and Digital Media 17
