WORK EXPERIENCE YEAR PLANNER 2021 - 2022 ACTIVITY DATE Introduc on to work experience – Ini al presenta on outlining the work W/C 11th OCTOBER 2021 experience process for the year Pupils begin making plans to iden fy poten al employers as supported in FROM OCTOBER ONWARDS Tutor lessons. Work experience packs, guidance notes and student pin numbers given out. Students to start researching and applying to employers, wri ng le ers, Emailing, telephone calls or calling on employers direct. Tutor Support – Tutors to monitor the progress of their students nding placements and to support them in iden fying placements. Support from Mrs Masters for students struggling with nding a placement. ALL YEAR Deadline for Approval and Consent Forms FEBRUARY Forms signed by employer, parents and student to be returned to Work HALF TERM 2022 Experience Co-Ordinator. The reason for this deadline is the need for a visit to be completed with the employer to ensure the safety of the placement. Health & Safety Awareness (including Child Protec on ) Students will be MAY PROJECT WEEK AND delivered sessions on Health & Safety Law, Risks and Hazards, Signs and AN ASSEMBLY Signage and will know what to expect in terms of Health & Safety from their JUNE 2022 employer. Students in higher risk placements will be instructed on addi onal control measures. World of Work Day – Transferable skills - Prepara on for employment MAY 2022 during Project Week Work Experience Logbooks Logbooks issued to students and students JUNE-JULY 2022 briefed on their use during Tutor Time. Students complete personal Ac on Plan to iden fy goals and targets they want to achieve from their placement. Students to contact employers to con rm their arrangements for their rst JUNE-JULY 2022 day Students to con rm their start details, start mes and who they report to with their employers. WORK EXPERIENCE WEEK 11TH to 15th JULY 2022 All students a end their work placements for the whole week as per agreed arrangements with employer. Students complete their Work Experience Books. Employer visits by Mounts Bay Sta assessing progress and wellbeing of students. You will need your unique Pin Number to access this. Click Log in: Student (Enter your First and Last Name) Name: ………………………………………………………………………. Pin: ………………… Enter your Pin Number given by your tutor How to Search for Employers using the Veryan website 1)After logging in as above 2) Click Search 3) Tick the Job Families that you are interested in working in from the coloured icons on the screen eg: Catering and Hospitality Or - use the Organisation Keyword to help search for the type of work you would like to do eg: Construction 4) Select the town you would like to work eg Penzance – or the postcode of the area you would like to search 5) It will then give you a list of possible placements. If you click on View it will give you a job description and contact details, which you can copy or print out and use to write your letter, phone or call in direct to the employer 6) Contact employers by writing them a letter of application (see example in pack), sending an E-Mail or by telephone Please note that the job opportunities on Veryan are NOT 'advertised' placements. There is NO GUARANTEE of a placement being offered. WORK EXPERIENCE REGULATIONS Employment law and work experience law are not the same. Work experience, or education law, allows students below the minimum school leaving age into work places which employment law would not, such as industrial settings. However, a number of employment laws and guidelines which are age related still apply in a work experience setting. Certain situations are not allowed for work experience for students under a certain age Students under 18 cannot work • in a tattoo studio or any other skin piercing environment • on board a registered boat or ship (This only applies to Years 10 and 11) • in any gambling context in a cinema, night club or behind a bar • in a scrapyard • in a travelling fair ground or circus There are also restrictions on the types of activity students cannot do on work experience All students cannot work • work above two metres fall height i.e. 2m above ground level outdoors or oor level indoors • work with toxic substances • be exposed to radiation • use power driven tools and machinery • work in excessive noise, heat or cold • work in con ned spaces: mines, chimneys, storage tanks, tunnels, basements etc • drive tractors, quad bikes, earth moving machines etc • Ride horses while on their work placement fl fi
WORK EXPERIENCE PROCESS Student uses the website http://cornwall.learnaboutwork.net or other means to identify an employer. Student writes letter of application, Emails or telephones employer to enquire about the possibility of a work experience placement. Employer Says Yes Employer Says No Student identi es and makes contact with Employer con rms placement can go ahead. more employers or seeks advice from Tutors or Mrs Masters your Work Experience Co- Ordinator Front page of the Work Experience Approval & Consent Form is then completed by parents or carers. It is signed by both parent/carer and student and then sent to the employer. Employer returns form to pupil having completed Sections 2-3. Pupils and parents read Sections 2-3 and sign Page 4 to con rm their agreement to the placement in principal. Employer returns form to pupil having completed Sections 2-3. Mrs Masters inputs the details on the Veryan database for Health and Safety checks to commence by Cornwall Education Business Partnership. Mrs Masters will con rm placements with employers when they have been approved. Parents and students will be noti ed of any placements that are not approved.
