Committee Member Spotlight: Hayden Speed I’ve been obsessed with fishing ever since I can remember - and started off catching spotties and baby snapper off the wharf in the harbour. That slowly progressed into short trips on our old 4.5m boat in the catching anything I could. I was eventually old enough and confident enough to head outside the Harbour where I did a lot of softbaiting for snapper along the beach or off Town Point. I remember for my 10th birthday Dad took me out to Schooner to jig for some kingies, where I nailed a 10kg fish: it absolutely dominated me - but I stuck with it and eventually boated it; ever since then I’ve been hooked on chasing kings! Soon after we had a boat upgrade into a 6.5 metre Rayglass called Mayhem. This opened up a whole new variety of fishing locations to explore. I first ventured out to Mayor when I was 12 and White soon after. Nowadays we’re heading far and wide targeting the likes of yel- lowfin and bluefin tuna, big kingfish and wreckfish, the sort of stuff I dreamed off as a little kid.
I’ve recently taken up the hobby of fish- ing with ultra light line. This adds a new and exciting element to fishing as you get to appreciate the power that fish re- ally have - and the patience it takes to land them! As fun as this is, my favourite style of fishing is any type of kingfish fishing whether that be jigging, live baiting or stickbaiting. I love the power and size of kingfish. I also love an epic strayline session, there’s noth- ing more exciting than having a big run before clicking the reel into gear and hooking a beast! Recently I have started writing monthly articles for the NZ Fishing News magazine. I have also started a YouTube and Instagram page as ‘May- hem Fishing’ where I’m posting up my latest fishing adventures.
Speices of the Month -Trevally Trevally is a fish found around most parts of NZ but more commonly in the north island and top of the south island at depths of about 80 metres. They are rapid growers and reach full maturity after five years but can live for up to 45 years. They have an average weight of 0.4- 2kg and a length of 30-60cm and can be caught all year round. Physical attributes include a blue-green on the top, silver-white on the belly and a yellowish sheen runs along its length. Trevally feed on krill and plankton in closely packed surface schools. They belong to the Carangidae family, just like Kingfish and are suitable for most cooking methods.
Speices of the Month - Kingfish About 75% of all Kingfish harvested in NZ are caught by recreational fishers and are found in depths of up to 200m. most commonly found in the northern half of the North Island but also found from the Kermadec Islands to Foveaux Strait. Kingfish are large predatory fish with adults growing to over 1.5m in length. They usually occur in schools ranging from a few fish to well over 100 Recreationally-caught kingfish average 10kg but can be more than 30kg and can be caught all year round. Kingfish are green on top with a white underside and a green-gold band from the nose through to the undertail.
