Semester Course Title Credits I General English I 2 II General English II 2 III General English III 2 IV General English IV 2 COURSE MATRIX RATIONALE The criteria that governed the selection of texts for UG – semester I and II- students of General English range from exposing students to diverse socio-cultural issues to reading literature for pleasure. If exposure to diversity is one aspect, creating awareness of the universality of certain truths that cut across boundaries of time, place and community is the other defining feature of some of the texts. Fostering the spirit of inquiry and nurturing creativity are also factors that were kept in mind during the selection process. The text has also been designed to cater to the needs of mixed- ability classes. Students of English develop a wide understanding of languages, literatures and cultures and they are encouraged to reflect and critique on their own based on their learning and exposure in the classroom so as to deal with real life situations in a more meaningful way. General English is a compulsory course for all streams, expect the select few Vocational courses offered at Mount Carmel College Autonomous, Bangalore. Students studying B.A and B.Sc. undertake four semesters of General English, where as those students studying B.Com and BBA study it only for the first two semesters of the Undergraduate program offered at MCC.
