2 About the Book TITLE: Mornings with Monet AUTHOR Barb Rosenstock ILLUSTRATOR: Mary GrandPré RECOMMENDED FOR: all ages Monet was initially rejected for using bright colors and tangled brushstrokes. But soon art dealers and collectors were lining up each morning to see as Monet saw. Monet, however, waited only for the light. He chased the sun from a studio boat before breakfast. His brush moved back and forth, and he put in the arduous work to create an image that seemed to contain no effort at all. This is the story of a morning with Monet. ________________________________________________________________________________ Looking closely WATCH SARAH INTRODUCE THIS BOOK ON VIDEO (8 MIN) When you open the book, the first thing you see is a quote from Claude Monet. A quote like that is called an epigraph. It’s often meant to hint at the book’s theme. What clues does this epigraph? The quotes from Monet on the endpapers would make an excellent addition to a reading journal. After you've read the story, read the quote on the endpapers at the back of the book. How does that quote strike you now that you've read the book? Notice the cat on the first page. Does it remind you of this cat, painted by Monet? Text layout can direct the reader to read in a certain way. Listen for the words: OVER. DIP. PULL. as you read the book together. How does the book designer ensure they stand out? Does the way the text appears on the page make you feel as though you are on the River Seine with Monet? © 2021, SARAH MACKENZIE MEDIA LLC all rights reserved
Let's talk about it 3 Use any of the following questions with kids of all ages. Asking open-ended questions is more important than getting compelling answers. We want to help our kids develop the habit of asking questions; this is how we raise discerning readers. _______________________________________________________________________ In the book, we read that Monet is “rich, famous around the world.” Why do you think he chose to keep painting? Do you think Monet was rebellious? What would have happened if he didn’t try a new way of painting? What would have happened if he had gone to work in the family ship supply business? How was Monet like other painters? How was he different? Compare this book to others by this same author/illustrator team: The Noisy Paint Box, Through the Window or Vincent Can’t Sleep. How are the books alike? How are they different? What is something you don't want to forget about this story?
