C+V Home UNIQUE & ON TREND, IN LEWISTOWN! After living all over the US, Greg Clark and Frank Valach were accustomed to having easy access to beautiful things for the home. The pair decided to create a store in Lewistown that they would like to shop at; to offer home decor no one else offered in the region and they have! C+V Home is a jewel box of a shop in downtown Lewistown and a must visit if you’re in central Montana. The idea was to create a niche with unique antique and vintage pieces for the home; the type of on-trend items decorators were looking for. They consciously stayed away from the western lodge look because it was already well represented in the state. C+V Home has been open about 3 years and Greg feels good about the business’s progress. Momentum is building about C+V’s unique offerings via word of mouth and social media. As sellers on the online platform Chairish -- an international website used by interior designers -- the pair are experienced with offering high quality antique & vintage items for the home. The focus of C+V Home is to offer the type and quality of goods that designers are looking for. Online sales from all over the world account for about two- thirds of C+V Home’s business and in 2020, a third of sales came from the Lewistown store. Greg and Frank work to cultivate local buyers from across the state and region. The year 2020 was a very good sales year for the business, with Greg reporting it “seemed like everyone wanted to redecorate Overall their goal for C+V Home is simple: to “enable our their house”. Sold items are shipped out of Lewistown via an friends and neighbors to create homes as fabulous and unique on-line transportation service that offers white glove transport. as they are!” How did the pair end up in central Montana? Frank’s a born C+V Home and raised Lewistown native, so he’s come full circle. Both are 413 W Main Street, Lewistown MT strong supporters of Lewistown; as Greg says “Lewistown is a 406-366-3604, cvhomemontana@gmail.com beautiful & friendly Montana community where good things www.cvhomemt.com n are happening”. BOOK COLLECTING 101 By Shelly Turk, Billings, MT “But these are old! They were my grandfather’s books!” The “Ex-library” copies are culled books that usually have library short, auburn-haired woman had tears in her eyes. “They have stamps or card holders attached. “Book club” copies must be to be worth something!” I had just tried to gently tell her that so designated, and are not considered collectible. “Binding it might be best to donate her books to a worthy organization copy” describes a book that has a loose, non-existent, torn, or as they had little to no value to collectors. Foxing is age-related in every book collector’s world, but the most important deterioration that causes spots is condition, condition, and browning on old paper condition. With all of this being said, I am a firm believer that collecting should be for pleasure, and not just for financial gain. My early 1900s leather-bound set of Charles Dickens’ works has been worn by many readers’ hands. The corners are bent, the pages are foxed, and the gilt lettering is rubbed and faded. But the books add character to my shelf, and when I look at them, I am transported back to the dusty, cramped bookshop on a back street in London where I purchased them from a tiny, ancient man with fly-away white hair and twinkling blue eyes. I would not sell them for any price! n Shelly Turk Marketplace 3301 Montana Antiques & Vintage Directory® | Page 9

Museum of the Miracle of America AMERICAN ANTIQUES Polson Museum Showcases Artifacts of American History by Gil Mangels Have you wondered where antiques ended up after they are sold? Put your mind at ease. Some of them end up for the world to see and help tell a story. I’m Gil Mangels and I grew up on a farm just south of Polson, Montana. My first introduction to the antique world was at a family picnic on the shore of Flathead Lake when I was 3 ½ yrs. old. Playing on the lakeshore, I was drawn to a neat little rock. I showed it to my mother, who said, “Oh that’s an Indian arrowhead, you need to save that.” So, I became a saver of neat and intriguing items, dragging things home from my grandparents much to the chagrin of my father. Fast forward to my 3 years as an Army Military Policeman. A year’s duty at historic West Point and occasional assignments as security at the military museum further enhanced my love of antiques. A tour in Germany with a trip to Berlin showed me how precious and fragile our American freedoms are. A change of vocations from a farmer, where I had amassed a lot of ag antiques, to that of machinist and welder expanded my interest to include mechanical antiques. I was intrigued by “So, I became a saver of the functional art form and mechanical ingenuity of antique motorcycles as well, and over the years gathered quite a neat and intriguing items, collection of bikes and related memorabilia. My wife liked dragging things home from antiques also and we began amassing quite a varied collection and I began thinking of a museum. We even bought vintage my grandparents much to the items when museums or antique shops closed and had chagrin of my father.” auctions. - Gil Mangels To see the rest of the story, please go to our website, www.miracleofamericamuseum.org. You might even see something we bought at your store or outbid you at an auction! Page 22 | Issue 3 - March 2021
Founded in 1981, Gil & Joanne Mangel’s public education museum is a non-profit organization, dedicated to preservation of one of the largest private collections of artifacts of American history. The collection of thousands of items is housed in dozens of buildings on the south end of Flathead Lake. Very kid friendly, the museum has lots to interest all age groups. @simplymalvintage USE YOUR VINTAGE! By Mallory Hill, Kalispell, MT There is a certain feeling one gets when out hunting and scouring the land for vintage and antiques. I am sure you can relate: the rush of excitement, the disbelief that you found it in the wild, and the sure-fire plan that you know what you will do with the said item when you get it home. Then you bring your unique treasure home, glance around the house, and have no idea what to do with it. No? Just me? But what does one do with it all!? What if we started to use the vintage items we love to collect so much? I adore the look on my six-year-old daughter’s face when she gets to use one of my antique teacups for milk and cookies, and when a neighbor is going through a hard time, one of the many bud vases I have found filled with colorful roses brings them a bit of joy. One of the best things about finding that unique piece is bringing it home and figuring out how to incorporate it Putting your treasured items to good use instead of into my home. Even though granny chic is making quite laying around accumulating dust takes a bit of creativity! the comeback in home design, I prefer (and so does my With a houseful of children, my home has to be practical, husband) to find that blend between the modern world comfortable, and dare I even say durable at times. I have and the vintage one of the past. At one point, I had more to be a bit more creative if I still want to be surrounded by mid-century cocktail glasses than I had opportunities to my lovely vintage treasures! enjoy them! It’s a never-ending struggle to keep that balance between hoarding and enjoying the treasures I I recently acquired a fantastic bamboo end table, but it find. didn’t have the glass top, making it a dangerous place to put things. Not willing to give up on it just yet, I started If there just isn’t enough creativity or table space to make shopping my own house and came upon one of my that fun vintage treasure work in my home, I pass it on! favorite thrift finds that is a large white circular marble Sometimes it’s gifted to a friend, or I list it in my online slab that cost me one dollar! It fit perfectly on top of the vintage shop! I started selling vintage and antiques about bamboo table and created such a great and useful piece seven years ago when my collection began to teeter on of furniture! overwhelming. SELLING VINTAGE DRESS UP ON INSTAGRAM Like most vintage fashionistas, Emmy Hill wears vintage fashion whenever and wherever she can. A collector of vintage fashion accessories since she was little (she’s 7 years old now), Emmy adds to her vintage collection when hitting shops and estate sales with mom Mallory. With a good eye for style and quality, Emmy likes to buy vintage for dress-up because “it’s real, not pretend”. Knowing Emmy’s collection of vintage accessories for dress-up was very popular with her friends, when Emmy’s collection reached an overflow point, Mallory suggested Emmy put together some dress up kits to sell on her Instagram account. That online sales approach for the vintage dress up kits proved to be really successful! Emmy knows her target demographic for sales and put together a variety of kits to appeal to the young-ish crowd. Each kit has a name and distinctive style and includes a vintage necklace, earrings, bracelet, scarf, purse, and gloves. Emmy’s favorite during her first Instagram sale was the “Night on the Town” kit, which featured black and sparkly. Since that first sale, Emmy’s had a second sale, also a big success. The combination of Emmy’s vintage style sense and using social media as a sales platform is a great example of vintage sellers using technology to reach a new group of vintage collector’s! n Page 26 | Issue 3 - March 2021

LAUGHING LADIES ANTIQUES DOING GOOD IN COLUMBUS Proceeds from Antique Store go to Stillwater County’s Food Bank Lareta Sue Clark, store manager of Laughing Ladies Antiques and Lara Strickland, executive director of Project Hope are two easy-going powerhouses that help keep Project Hope, the Stillwater County food bank, growing and thriving -- in part through sales at Laughing Ladies Antiques. Store manager Lareta Sue is the type of super merchandiser that wakes up at night thinking of ways to display and feature items in the shop. She also is the creator of the store sign out front that lists all the types of things you can find inside the store ... and there are a lot! Laughing ladies Antiques gets its supply of antiques and vintage items from donations to the Project Hope thrift store. Volunteers sorting through the donations keep an eye out for things that may be good additions to the shop. Lareta Sue has been volunteering for 15 years, and shop manager since 2015. She has a good eye for what collectors and shoppers are looking for and works with the thrift store volunteers to make sure quality standards for Laughing Ladies items are met. Lareta Sue also keeps the store very well organized. Lara has been Project Hope’s executive director for 3 years but she grew up with the organization. Her mom, Rae Ellen, is a founding board member and would bring Lara along when it was her turn to volunteer. One of the important achievements for the organization’s growth was when they were able to secure a USDA Rural Development loan to purchase a building in the heart of Columbus’s downtown. Page 28 | Issue 3 - March 2021
Having adequate space allowed the food bank to expand, the thrift store to be well organized, and for Laughing Ladies to be located right next door to the source of their stock. The Laughing Ladies Antiques store began when Project Hope board members noticed that some very nice old things were being donated to the thrift store. The idea of a separate shop that specialized in antiques, vintage, and collectibles, grew from there. Curating thrift store donations to supply an antiques store, which then helps fund a food bank or other charity, is a model that other Montana communities and counties may want to investigate. For almost 15 years, proceeds from Laughing Ladies Antiques in downtown Columbus have been helping fill food boxes and supplying school kids’ weekend food, aiding Project Hope’s mission of ending hunger in Stillwater County. STAY HISTORIC By Jan Lerum MT Antiques & Vintage Directory When traveling the state, my overnight stays focus on historic accommodations. Just like Montana, there’s a wide spectrum of accommodation available, from humble to grand. Grand is definitely a theme in old time Montana hotel names. I stayed at The Kalispell Grand, The Grand Hotel & Restaurant in Big Timber, and The Grand Union Hotel in Fort Benton. If you know of any more operating Grand hotels in Montana, let me know! A bit about the places I’ve stayed. All different...all fun to visit. • The Grand Union Hotel, Fort Benton, circa 1882, beautifully restored and overlooking the Missouri River; • Hotel Arvon, circa 1890, downtown Great Falls, brilliant modern renovation of historic hotel featuring original western art; • The Grand Hotel & Restaurant, circa 1890, Big Timber, serves breakfast in the bar; • The Pollard, circa 1893, Red Lodge’s first brick building; • The Murray Hotel, circa 1904, Livingston, opposite the Livingston Railroad Depot. • Stevensville Hotel, circa 1910, Stevensville, the former Thornton Hospital; • Horton House, circa 1912, Miles City, a four square brick B&B with gorgeous original features; • The Kalispell Grand, circa 1912, Kalispell, delicious serve- yourself breakfasts; • The Caledonia B&B, circa 1917, brick Craftsman house in friendly Philipsburg. Accommodations across Montana are experiencing an economic downturn from the covid health situation.
