PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE .The 128th Annual Maclean Show will be held on Tuesday, 28th and Wednesday, 29th April 2020 and I take this opportunity to thank and congratulate the Committee and members of the Maclean Show Society for their continued commitment in maintaining the high standard set by previous committee members. Visitors and competitors are very welcome and given fine weather I am sure we will all be witness to some excellent displays and competitions including Flower displays and Floral art, Photography, Arts & Crafts (come see the new beadwork and jewellery section!), Special schools display, Home and farm produce, Sugar Cane, Poultry, Trade displays and of course the Cattle and Horse events are a must. A special thank you must go to all business houses and certain individuals for their generous sponsorship and donations and a mighty thank you to the wonderful volunteers, all of whom contribute to a successful Show. All competitors compete entirely at their own risk. _______________________________________________________ PAVILION REGULATIONS While the committee will take every possible precaution under the circumstances to ensure the safety of articles sent to the exhibition, they wish it to be distinctly understood that the owners themselves must take the risk of exhibiting them and should any article be lost or stolen the Committee will not hold themselves responsible. Neither the Society nor stewards will be responsible for entries or containers etc. left after the Show. Prize money is the exhibitor’s responsibility to collect. Any prize money unclaimed 30 days after the show will be paid back into the Society’s account. Cash prizes can be collected on Wednesday, after winners are known. 26 5

The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW is seeking a rural ambassador 2. Glass mounted prints will NOT BE ACCEPTED. between the ages of 15 to 17 (Junior) & 18 to 24 years (Senior) to 3. OPEN SECTION 15 Plain sponge (jam filled) FAMILY CHALLENGE Come on all the family cooks out there. Make this a fun competition with family members and friends to see who can cook the best Custard Powder Sponge. All you have to do is the follow the recipe below and you could win 1st $150.00., 2nd $50 Come on and have a go! 16 Custard Powder Sponge - recipe to be followed 4 eggs, 2/3 cup caster sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1/3 cup custard powder, 2/3 cup plain flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder. Directions - Beat eggs, sugar and vanilla until fluffy and light cream in colour. Sift dry ingredients together. Gently fold into egg mixture. Evenly divide mixture into 2 well greased sandwich tins. Bake 20 mins in moderate oven 180 degrees. Fill with jam and mock cream. AGRICULTURAL SOCIETIES COUNCIL OF N.S.W. RICH FRUIT CAKE COMPETITION The following recipe is compulsory for all entrants Here’s what you need: 250g (8oz) sultanas 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg 250g (8oz) chopped raisins 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 250g (8oz) currants 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 125g (4oz) chopped mixed peel 250g (8oz) butter 90g (3oz) chopped red glace cherries 250g (8oz) soft brown sugar 90g (3oz) chopped blanched almonds 1/2 teaspoon lemon essence OR 1/3 cup sherry or brandy finely grated lemon rind 250g (8oz) plain flour 1/2 teaspoon almond essence 60g (2oz) self raising flour 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence 4 large eggs Here’s what you do: Mix together all the fruits and nuts and sprinkle with the sherry or brandy, cover and leave for at least 1 hour (overnight is preferred). Sift together the flours and spices. Cream together the butter, sugar and the essences. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then alternately add the fruit and flour mixture. Mix thoroughly. The mixture should be stiff enough to support a wooden spoon. Place the mixture into a prepared tin no larger than 20cm (8”) and bake in a slow oven for approx. three and half to four hours. Allow the cake to cool in the tin. NOTE: To ensure uniformity and depending upon the size it is suggested the raisins be snipped into 2 or 3 pieces. WINNERS at Country Shows will each receive a cash prize of $10 and will be required to bake a second ‘Rich Fruit Cake’ in order to compete in a semi- final to be conducted by each of the 14 groups of the Agricultural Societies Council of N.S.W. The fourteen winners at Regional Level will each receive a cash prize of $10 and are required to bake a third ‘Rich Fruit Cake’ for the Final Judging at the Royal Easter Show where the winner will receive a cash prize of $50. 16 15
