This year our volunteer readers will be reading “The Bernstain Bears’ Dollars and Sense.” Bear cubs Brother and Sister start earning an allowance but quickly learn that spending all their money isn’t always the best option. What better way to kick off MSW than by protecting your identity and financial world? Shredding your personal documents is one of the best and easiest ways to keep your identity safe. Simply throwing away your bank statements or bills can leave you wide open for identity theft. Repairing your credit after identity theft can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. Why chance it? Today at the Rainier Branch of the Seattle Public Library, you can bring up to 5 copy paper size boxes worth of personal and financial documents to shred for free. All papers get shredded on the spot so you know they have been properly taken care of. After you’ve shredded your papers, you can join the Southwest Branch of the Seattle Public Library and catch a showing of the 1974 Oscar winning movie, The Sting, with the opportunity to ask the staff of the Attorney General’s office any questions you might have. You will need to RSVP for the movie if interested. by 7 years old! Today from 1:00-2:30 PM at the William G. Reed Shelton Timberland Library in Mason County there will be a program on helping you teach your kids responsible money habits. This event is for the adults. For those of you a little farther south, Money Smart Week is coming to the Riverview Education Center in Raymond! This event contains different workshops to help you make educated financial decisions on a variety of topics. The event runs from 1:00-6:00 PM. And for those of you way up north, the Orcas Public Library in San Juan County is holding a DIY Wills and Estate Planning class. Here you can learn some of the ins and outs of simple estate planning, what information you will need and when you will need a professionals help. You can catch this event from 5:30-7:00 PM. Attend this program to get personal assistance from a librarian and use all the great resources the Timberland Library has to offer on financial planning. Out on the coast in Illwaco, the Columbia Education center will have a workshop on making educated financial decisions from 3:00-7:00 PM. First off, Asotin County is offering an online banking event. Online banking can be a great tool, it is convenient and you can do it from anywhere at any time. It can also get a little confusing. This event, held at the Asotin County Library, will help you learn all the ins and outs of online banking so you can safely and securely pay your bills online. You can attend this event from 6:00-8:00 PM. Another great event for the day is King County’s Establishing, Improving, and Managing Credit event at the Beacon Hill Branch of the Seattle Public Library. This event will show you how the credit companies calculate your credit score and how you can use this knowledge to improve your score. You can catch this event from 3:30-5:00 PM. The third event for the day is also in King county, DIY Market Research at the Central Library in Seattle from 12:00-2:00 PM. Here you will learn about making informed decisions about planning, market analysis, site location and more for your business planning. Way up north in San Juan County from 5:30-7:00 PM there will be an event held to teach you how to protect yourself from cyber theft. There is an increasing amount of scams and internet fraud these days making it important to be able to spot a scam and keep your identity safe. Today is the last chance to attend a crowd favorite, Shred Day! At the Beacon Hill Branch of the Seattle Public Library from 1:00-5:00 PM, you can bring up to five copy paper-size boxes of personal and financial documents to shred on the spot. Shredding your confidential documents is one of the easiest ways to protect your identity. Lastly, the High Point Branch of the Seattle Public Library is hosting a Financial Family Fun Fest. There will be crafts for kids, duct tape wallet making for teens, and free financial one-on-one signups for adults. It will be a great time for all. Money Smart Week maybe almost over, but it is still Financial Capability Month for another five days! Keep checking back for more great financial resources.
