Introduction Momentum Venues is located in central Edinburgh at the St Stephen’s Centre. St Stephen’s Church is located in Edinburgh’s New Town, at the bottom of Saint Vincent Street. It was built in 1828 to a design by architect William Henry Playfair. Momentum Venues offers three performance spaces of different scales, geared to accommodating the highest calibre of fringe production on offer in 2015. The three spaces are detailed later in this pack. The St Stephen’s Centre, formally operated by Northern Stage, The Traverse and The Arches, is now under new management. Momentum Venues will be curating a season of twenty diverse, daring and dynamic shows to present across the three spaces. Artistic Director David Hutchinson and Commercial Director Phillip Rowntree have produced over 20 shows at the Edinburgh Fringe to date and from this experience understand the importance of a strong venue/company relationship. Momentum Venues will pioneer this vision and support companies throughout their production period. As part of the Momentum Venues season, visiting companies will be offered a comfortable get-in and fit-up period along with ample set storage in order to increase production values and encourage risk taking in physical production as well as in performance. We all know that part of the fun of an Edinburgh Fringe experience is marketing your show, creating tableaus on the mile, and flyering (even in the rain). But for those companies that want a little more time to enjoy the sites between shows, our marketing department will offer a premium package above and beyond what is offered as part of a standard Edinburgh Fringe run, working with trusted partners to maximize awareness of your show. All companies will be afforded the opportunity to discuss budgets and financial planning with one of the Management team as well as assistance in finding the best deals for print artwork, graphic design and technical provisions. Our collaborative and understanding approach to producing will allow our visiting companies to focus on what’s important: creating top quality work. Momentum Venues 2
About the Fringe In 2014, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival hosted nearly 3,000 shows from across a wide range of art forms, from dance to comedy, musicals to plays. With over 20,000 contributors, the 2015 Fringe was the biggest and most successful to date. Careers have been started and defined at the Fringe, as thousands of festival-goers descend on Scotland’s capital city to hunt out the next big drama, comedy, musical, or dance piece. The opportunity to showcase new work to arts professionals from across the world lures some of the best global talent for an action-packed month. Choosing the right space for your production is fundamental in giving yourself the best chance of a successful run. At Momentum Venues, we have three very different spaces offering different sizes, capacities and décor to cater for a wide range of performance genres and requirements. Momentum Venues is kicking off its first Fringe Festival this summer, and we want to fully embrace the opportunity to make our mark. As the ‘new kid on the block’ we can’t wait to launch our venue with a host of top quality work from across the world to dazzle our audiences. Our carefully curated season aims to have something for everyone, and bring a flavour of the arts from across the Globe. Momentum Venues 3
Our Venues Momentum: Grand Our main space in Edinburgh has a seating capacity of 450. A large and flexible space, the Grand is perfect for larger scale productions – and has a large playing space, which is ideal for staging larger productions. This venue also has substantial height from floor to ceiling as well as raked seating in a thrust formation. The acoustics of this expansive auditorium have made it a popular venue for choral concerts and music recitals, and the space contains an unaltered “Father Willis” organ. The Grand Hall comes with two shared dressing rooms and storage space with the same height clearance as the space itself. Momentum: Grand has a dedicated entrance as grand as the venue itself. Technical specifications are still being drawn up for this venue, although approximate playing space can be provided on request. Momentum Venues 4
Momentum: Playhouse Our ground floor performance space has a seating capacity of 200. Momentum: Playhouse is set up in an ‘in the round’ configuration, this allows for a much more versatile and spacious playing area companied with excellent acoustics for moth drama and musical theatre. The Playhouse is set up with moveable seating allowing the space to be reconfigured* or seating to be removed. With private changing area, expansive storage and a dedicated entrance, anything is possible in this space. *Any reconfiguring out of the remit of the venue licence will be subject to further approval from Edinburgh City Council. Any expense incurred will be recharged to the visiting Company. Please advise Momentum Venues as soon as possible if this is something you wish to explore. Momentum Venues 5
Momentum: Studio The smallest of our three spaces, Momentum: Studio has a seating capacity of 50. The Studio is an intimate performance space perfect for small scale-drama, with limited set requirements. Despite being a small space, the venue has an excellent atmosphere, raked seating, private changing area and a dedicated entrance. Momentum Venues 6
Venue Services A Friendly Box Office Team Our box office will launch at the same time as the Edinburgh Fringe box office and will operate online, via phone, and finally at our box office counters, which will open in the last week of July. Our box office systems are linked to the Edinburgh Fringe Society box office via Red61, so tickets can also be purchased via them online and at their box office on the Royal Mile. Daily ticketing reports, arts industry reports and complimentary ticket allocations will be delivered to companies throughout performance weeks. A Helpful Technical Team All our venues come fully equipped with seating, a general lighting and sound rig, and wing space. Each space has individual technical specifications which are available to download via the website. Our technical team are fully trained and here to make sure you can get your production up on time and running smoothly, and to help with the turn around between performances. Each venue has two or three dedicated crew members who are on hand to assist with any technical matters. We expect visiting companies to provide their own operators for performances, but for an additional cost we can provide an experienced operator for the duration of your run. A Resourceful Marketing and PR Team In Edinburgh, visibility is everything, and without the right approach it is easy for even the highest quality shows to get lost in the waves of events and performances hitting the Scottish capital throughout August. Our in-house marketing and press team are here to help companies make the most of the promotional opportunities out there, and will carefully compose an individually tailored Marketing Plan with each company in the run up to the Edinburgh Festival. Our team will be constantly scouting the capital for opportunities to help promote our performers. Companies are welcome to drop-in to the Marketing and Press office at any time for advice or support. We will also be offering a premium package to our visiting companies, working with trusted partners to maximize awareness of your show. Our team will dedicate their resources to ensuring that no marketing opportunity goes unmissed, giving you a little more free time to enjoy the festival. The package will also include the design and print for fliers and posters. Our marketing team will also be at hand to advise you on the best format for your print marketing. This will include the optimum paper weight and size to use for distribution. They will also provide all companies with relevant logos and Edinburgh Fringe information to be included on all marketing.
