Module Catalogue for the Subject Music Education Bacheor’s degree programme with 2 majors, 75 ECTS credits Content and Objectives of the Programme The programme in Music Education leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (BA) is offered by the Faculty of Arts of JMU within the framework of a consecutive Bachelor's/Master's model as a course focusing on the fundamental principles of the discipline. The Bachelor's programme in Music Education (75 ECTS credits) provides specialised application- oriented training that focuses on the fundamental principles of the discipline. It equips students with the knowledge and skills needed for a career in music education. The programme offers a wide range of courses, and in the area of mandatory electives gives students the opportunity to start specialising by taking courses in fields of their choice. It gives students a good grounding in educational theory and equips them with essential practical musical skills, taking into account aspects of applied music education and music education in social and cultural context as well as debates on current music-related issues. Students who have graduated from this programme • are able to situate within a broader context fields in which music education professionals work or conduct academic research, and are able to formulate corresponding strategies for the present and outline prospects for the future. • are able to identify developments and changes brought about by important events in music and music education, and can compare different occupational profiles and societal supporting strata in the past and present. • are familiar with specialist terminology and are able to apply their knowledge of music theory to different repertoires in a practice-oriented manner. • are able to demonstrate their vocal and instrumental skills in both solo and group performances and have gained experience in ensemble work and directing an ensemble in both rehearsals and public performances. • have learned about selected approaches to the theory and practice of music education in a wide range of settings (e.g. at music schools or in adult education) and about current debates concerning teaching methods. • are familiar with institutions, organizational forms. and structures of cultural education and are able to identify steering mechanisms and develop medial facilitation strategies. • are able to apply selected interdisciplinary research methods in music education to central questions of theory construction in music education. • are able to outline debates in educational theory about key problems in music-education psychology and sociology and to take their own position within music-cultural networks. • are familiar with the academic concepts of culture, interculturality, and transculturality. • are familiar with the conditions, possibilities, and limitations of an academically sound understanding of the music of foreign cultures, and are able to apply critically the knowledge they have developed to problems in music education. • have developed a knowledge of 20th and 21s1 century popular music and, in particular, of its international manifestations, the conditions surrounding its development, and modes of reception. • are able to situate popular music within a global media context and the debates that accompany it. • are familiar with research methods and tools commonly used in the discipline and have learned the principles of good scholarly practice. • are able to contextualise, understand, and reflect upon academic texts as well as to describe the main ideas discussed in those texts. Depending on their choice of concentration and individual specialisation, graduates also acquire the following knowledge and skills: • Students who choose this concentration examine the institutions and organisational forms of musical life with respect to their own job prospects in the field of cultural education, and observe the steering mechanisms of music education. • They carry out independent projects at selected institutions of musical culture and the organisation of musical life, applying the knowledge and skills they have developed, assessing their own job prospects in the field of cultural education, and critically evaluating steering mechanisms of music education.] • They collaborate on their own in the tasks of selected institutions of musical culture and education.
