Content and Objectives of the Programme
The programme in Music Education leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (BA) is offered by the Faculty
of Arts of JMU within the framework of a consecutive Bachelor's/Master's model as a course focusing on
the fundamental principles of the discipline.

The Bachelor's programme in Music Education (75 ECTS credits) provides specialised application-
oriented training that focuses on the fundamental principles of the discipline. It equips students with
the knowledge and skills needed for a career in music education. The programme offers a wide range
of courses, and in the area of mandatory electives gives students the opportunity to start specialising
by taking courses in fields of their choice. It gives students a good grounding in educational theory
and equips them with essential practical musical skills, taking into account aspects of applied music
education and music education in social and cultural context as well as debates on current music-related
issues.

Students who have graduated from this programme
   • are able to situate within a broader context fields in which music education professionals
work or conduct academic research, and are able to formulate corresponding strategies for the
present and outline prospects for the future.
   • are able to identify developments and changes brought about by important events in music
and music education, and can compare different occupational profiles and societal supporting
strata in the past and present.

     and public performances.

wide range of settings (e.g. at music schools or in adult education) and about current debates
     concerning teaching methods.
   • are familiar with institutions, organizational forms. and structures of cultural education and are
able to identify steering mechanisms and develop medial facilitation strategies.
   • are able to apply selected interdisciplinary research methods in music education to central
questions of theory construction in music education.
   • are able to outline debates in educational theory about key problems in music-education
psychology and sociology and to take their own position within music-cultural networks.
   • are familiar with the academic concepts of culture, interculturality, and transculturality.
   • are familiar with the conditions, possibilities, and limitations of an academically sound
understanding of the music of foreign cultures, and are able to apply critically the knowledge
they have developed to problems in music education.
   • have developed a knowledge of 20th and 21s1 century popular music and, in particular, of
its international manifestations, the conditions surrounding its development, and modes of
     reception.
   • are able to situate popular music within a global media context and the debates that accompany
     it.
   • are familiar with research methods and tools commonly used in the discipline and have learned
the principles of good scholarly practice.
   • are able to contextualise, understand, and reflect upon academic texts as well as to describe
the main ideas discussed in those texts.

in writing, adhering to the principles of good scholarly practice.
Depending on their choice of concentration and individual specialisation, graduates also acquire the
following knowledge and skills:

musical life with respect to their own job prospects in the field of cultural education, and observe
the steering mechanisms of music education.
    • They carry out independent projects at selected institutions of musical culture and the
organisation of musical life, applying the knowledge and skills they have developed, assessing
their own job prospects in the field of cultural education, and critically evaluating steering
       mechanisms of music education.]
    • They collaborate on their own in the tasks of selected institutions of musical culture and
education. They assess their own job prospects in the field of cultural education through close
familiarity with the organisational forms of musical life and are able to evaluate critically the
       steering mechanisms of musical education.
In their Bachelor's thesis, if this is made in music education, students demonstrate their ability to conduct
research and write on a narrowly defined topic in the discipline of Music Education under the guidance
of a supervisor and within a given time-frame, applying the methods they have learned and adhering to
the principles of good scholarly practice.
