About MOAS MOAS is an independent, apolitical, international humanitarian organization, aimed to provide life-saving aid and assistance to the world’s most vulnerable migrant communities. Founded in 2013 by the Catrambone family in response to a shipwreck off the Italian island of Lampedusa that killed 368 people, MOAS became the first non-governmental SAR organization in the Central Mediterranean, providing a model for civil society search and rescue, as well as other NGOs. Today, MOAS aims to provide a model for the engagement of civil society in tackling humanitarian crises around the world. After several missions in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas, MOAS moved its operations to assist Rohingya refugees fleeing violence in Myanmar and the local Bangladeshi host community: more than 40 tons of humanitarian aid were delivered and two Aid Stations were set up to provide vital care and medication to the community. The mission is now focused on providing its technical advice and expertise for the Flood and Water Safety Training to empower refugees and host community representatives and to encourage better community responses to the dangers of monsoon season. In 2020, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh we decided to shift the operational focus of our workshops from the production of bottle rings and throw bags to the production of face masks to prevent the spread of the virus in the region. MOAS is currently involved in several missions in Yemen and Somalia assisting the most vulnerable communities by delivering nutritional and medical aid in collaboration with our local partners. MOAS also operates in Malta with various projects to assist migrant communities, such as the Remote Learning Project, aimed at reducing the digital divide for the migrant families residing in the centres. Now more than ever MOAS is calling for the creation and implementation of Safe and Legal Routes for asylum seekers and refugees to provide safe pathways to combat smuggling and human trafficking. MOAS has Consultative Status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and is member of the Malta Refugee Council. www.moas.eu
