8 NORTH TARANAKI MIDWEEK, JULY 22, 2020 neighbourly.co.nz Sculptures highlight Project Reef Life A series of sculptures atop poles along the road to Pātea Beach highlight an unseen, underwater project. The Pātea Pou Project is a series of iconic silhouettes on Pātea Golf Club land on the road down to Mana Bay. It celebrates the diversity of the ocean and also raises aware- ness of the award-winning Proj- ect Reef Life, which has been studying a previously unknown reef, 11 kilometres off the South Taranaki coast, since 2015. Karen Pratt, from Project Reef Life, teamed up with Michaela Stoneman, arts co-ordinator at the South Taranaki District Council, to brainstorm ideas for a new project to raise awareness of their research. Students from Pātea Area School – some who were already involved with Project Reef Life research – helped design the sculptures, which feature wildlife from the local ocean environ- ment. There is also a diver, to recog- nise the voluntary work of the South Taranaki Underwater Club, through which Project Reef Life is run. The preliminary designs were adapted with materials and Eagle rays, a diver and an albatross are among a series of sculptures atop poles along the road to Pātea Beach highlighting an unseen, underwater project. strength in mind, as the coastal STUFF site is prone to fierce weather.
