in the beginning
In 1984, Gilbert and Lynda Rainville’s 6-month-old daughter, Kacey-Lynn, was
diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. She began treatment at Hamilton’s
McMaster Children’s Hospital and appeared to be responding well, but relapsed in
1986.
By then Canada’s Wonderland had opened and Kacey-Lynn heard about all the
fun families could have there. She desperately wanted to go. It occurred to Lynda
that other children with cancer and their families might also need a day away from
hospitals, clinics, pokes, and procedures to just smile and have fun.
So with help from friends and family, she organized an event that raised an
amazing $7,000 - enough to treat 2 buses loaded with cancer kids and their families
to a day at Wonderland! And Help A Child Smile was born!

What started as one family’s need to see their sick child have a day away from the
hospital to have fun evolved into a grass roots organization comprised of a small
group of dedicated people who continue to volunteer their time, talents and energy
to giving children battling cancer opportunities to smile.
That first Wonderland day trip had such a positive impact on the families that we
began to explore other outings that would bring smiles to their faces. It didn’t take
long to find plenty. But in the beginning, there just wasn’t enough money to do
more than a few a year. So we reached out to first one venue, then another, and
explained who we were and what we wanted to do for these families. Gradually,
that one day at Wonderland turned into monthly year-round family outings to
many area attractions – sometimes 2 in 1 month!
We continue to seek out new adventures and activities as we strive to offer
something for every age group. Our roster now includes: African Lion Safari,
Bingemans Big Splash, Safari Niagara, Christmas Party, Emerald Lake, Hockey
games, Stampede Days Rodeo, Extreme Motocross, Family Fishing Derby, Disney
On Ice, March Break Magic, Canada’s Wonderland, Family Picnic, Drive-In
Movie Nights and Niagara Go-Karts & Mini Putt.

Then what?
Help at a fundraising event. There are non-physical tasks like sitting at a booth selling
tickets. There are physical tasks like setting up/taking down tables and displays and
carrying heavy objects. There are indoor events and outdoor events, daytime events
and nighttime events. You might even like to run an activity at an event – face-
painting, balloon tossing and the like.

We will do our best to arrange for you to ride with another volunteer.
Want to do more?
Organize your own event! We are always looking for new ideas and venues that will
raise awareness and funds!
How do I organize an event?
Aside from assistance from our existing Board and volunteers, we have an Event
Coordinator’s Package that will guide you through the process.

Over the years
Over the years, our Board developed strong connections
with the Staff at Mac. Through those relationships, we
learned of other needs the families face. As finances
allowed, we added more support programs. Today, these
include paying for parking, offering gas cards and food

must go to Sick Kids for treatments not available at Mac,

Ways we give a smile
The costs vary depending on the type of cancer,
length of treatment, number of family members and
so on, but based on averages, we spend about $3,000
dollars per year per family. On top of these day-to-day
supports, we offer every family an all-expenses paid
trip to Disney’s Give Kids The World Village in Florida
at an average cost of $5,000.
Give Kids The World Village
A stay at the Village is much more than a vacation. Dur-
ing one transformative week, families laugh, play and
create priceless memories together away from hospitals
and medical procedures. It's a magical week of "YES"
where kids can experience the simple joys of childhood,
and where families can recapture some of the precious
moments they missed due to illness.

las that are well equipped and fully stocked. It features
unique entertainment attractions, whimsical venues, and

receive tickets to most of the attractions in Central Florida,
Heidelberg, ON enjoy free meals, accommodations, entertainment, acces-
sible rides, and most importantly, renewed strength from

completely wonderful our GKTW trip was from start to finish. It was an experience that none
of us will ever forget.
905-682-4447 Joyce, when we got the news from you that our oldest daughter, Laura, had been granted a
wish trip to GKTW, you made more than a child smile, you made a whole family smile. When
Murray picked us up in the limo for the airport, we felt like celebrities, especially with the red
carpet he had for us! Once we landed in Orlando, our GKTW greeter kindly took us to get

The royal treatment continued at GKTW Village. Stephanie took us to our beautiful and
fully-equipped villa (including laundry machines) and explained how everything worked at the
Village. She was bubbly and fun and she gave us some good tips for planning ahead for the
week. Unfortunately, I had broken my toe a few days before the trip and suddenly required a
wheelchair to enable me to get around the Village and the parks. Maryanne, the manager on
duty at Guest Services, arranged immediately for my rental and it arrived the next morning.
We were constantly impressed with how accommodating everyone was. They truly wanted to

The truth is, we didn’t choose to make that change. Cancer chose to do this for us. The day
our daughter, then 5, was diagnosed with cancer changed our lives forever. In one 12-hour

span, on a cold January 2016 day, we learned our daughter’s mass was some form of cancer, it
would require chemotherapy and an immediate biopsy. She was poked and prodded multiple
times a day over the course of two weeks, first as an admitted patient at McMaster Children’s
Hospital, and then as an outpatient.
Back and forth we went, from Niagara to Mac, in a feeble attempt to keep things ‘normal’ for
our family. But there was no normal.
123 GREENS ROAD Cancer did not care that she was only five. That Brooklyn was happily taking dance classes and
learning to read. Cancer also didn’t care that her little brother loved to snuggle on the couch
with her or that her big brother played Uno and argued over who had to put the cereal box

away. Cancer simply didn’t care.
A short 18 months ago our entire world came to a screeching halt. In that moment, in the time
span where we held our breath waiting for biopsy results, the way we viewed our life changed.
The things we looked at changed. Our hearts, as broken as they were, saw love everywhere.

with MRIs every 3-6 months. She is a survivor. Our entire family survived.
And now the way we look at life has changed. We value family time. Quality time. Loving hugs
and cuddles and kisses more than ever before. We look at life as a gift. A blessing. A joyous
occasion to laugh and smile.
We are very grateful for the chance to spend a week together at Give Kids The World Village,
eighteen months later, healthy and well and happy, to see the world through these new, grateful
eyes of ours.

Dear Help A Child Smile:
I have been trying to think of what to say about our trip. Words can't describe how wonderful
it was. We spent the entire week feeling so loved and blessed. It was truly a life changing AIR WISE SALES
experience for us all. Everlee had a permanent smile on her face the entire week. For her
birthday, they surprised her with a beautiful horse drawn carriage ride through the village

The staff and volunteers truly make the experience that much more special. We participated
in every event at the village and utilized the tickets to Disney and other local parks such
