Being interviewed for “90 seconds with Sharon”
   Nau mai haere mai!

A warm welcome to Putāruru College. What
matters the most to us, is that students here
have a strong sense of “Learning for Life - Whāia
te mātauranga kei tua”. We want students to
experience a high quality education where they
feel nurtured, inspired and empowered to
achieve highly and be strong in this world.

Putāruru College has a long and proud history.
We enjoy a strong sense of community where Yr
7 and 8 students are warmly cared for as they
progress up in their senior years. Having 7 differ-
ent year levels makes our school unique. This
helps us create a family-like context for learning,
which when combined with high quality teaching practices, can lead to extraordinary experiences and outcomes
for our students. You will find a diverse curriculum, extensive opportunities outside the classroom and many lay-
ers of leadership here at Putāruru College.

We believe in EVERY student that walks through the gates of Putāruru College. Whether you are top or bottom of
the class, are stink at PE, love drawing, hate talking, have a part time job, enjoy reading, have 8 siblings you look
after, only go to school to eat your lunch, are the best GS at netball, live for the library, enjoy doing performances,
have your own ant collection - whatever you bring with you in your kete of experiences and knowledge - you are
warmly welcome here at Putāruru College.
It is not if you are bright, it is how you are bright.
Aki aki te tī o te tangata - nurture the insecrible light within a person.

It is our job as teachers and schools to open doors, to set students up for success and to support every student to
find their passion, purpose, and next step in life.

I was privileged to gain this role in June 2021. I want you to know that we are creating a new strategic plan and
redesigning our curriculum ahead of 2022. This is a very exciting time for our students, staff, school, whānau and
community. We look forward to our journey with you.
   Ngā mihi

since 1976.. After an initial settling-in period getting to grips with the logistics of timetabling and housing
an extra 200 pupils, the school has evolved into a college that we are all proud of. And in the nature of ed-
ucation, we will keep evolving to keep up with a changing world to meet the needs of our students and
community.

OUR LOGO
The logo of Putāruru College uses the motif of the Koru. This is the shape of the
unfurling fern frond and carries the symbolism of growth, learning and new life.
Our logo uses the two koru that have the rounded topography of the rolling hills
that make up our geographical setting. The two shades of green grow from the
greens of two of the major land industries in the South Waikato – pastoral farming
and forestry.
The two koru also make the initials of our school – PC (Putāruru College).
The blue links the school to the area’s many waters. Our school houses are named
after local waterways and the district is becoming more and more synonymous
with the clear, clean and life-giving waters of the regions’ streams and rivers.
The logo also incorporates the school’s motto and vision –
Learning for Life. Whāia te Mātauranga kei tua.

KĀRETI • provides programmes which are relevant, exciting and appropriate to
               student needs.

their own best and for good of others. Members of the College team
are professional, ethical and committed in all aspects of their work.
All are treated with respect and in return, are expected to show re-
               spect for others.
            • aims to provide an excellent education so that we are the first choice
of not only the local community, but also for others who seek the
quality education we offer our young people.

Our goal is to strive for excellence. As a school, we are fully committed to:
Our Students – to encourage them to make Putaruru College into the
school that is best for them, a school which challenges them to be the
best they can be, that provides them with the skills, attitudes and quali-
fications to make their dreams a reality.
Our Staff – to make Putaruru College into the school that would be best for
their own children. A college where teachers have a passion for teaching
           and learning.
Our Parents/Caregivers – to be assured that Putaruru College provides a
safe and happy environment for their students. That Putaruru College
demands the standards and values which allow students to become suc-
cessful and productive citizens in the community.
Our Community – to ensure that we have a college of which we can be
proud, and which reflects the needs and aspirations of its young people.
A college of first choice, not of convenience.

Our College DARE promotes our four key values:

         Determination - Manawanui

         Achievement - Kawenga

         Respect - Pono

Putaruru College offers a broad, balanced curriculum to ensure that we cater for the diverse
needs of our students. Our Curriculum is designed to be student-centered and learning-focused. From Year 7
through to Year 13, students are exposed to a range of core and optional subjects, leading to National Certificates
in Educational Achievement (Levels 1-3), as well as a number of other certificates on the NZQA Framework.

Junior School
Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 cover all areas of the
curriculum – in a modular programme. Years 7 and
8 are in home rooms, where they enjoy an
integrated curricular environment. In Year 9
and 10 students are offered more choice and are
grouped in their form classes for core subjects
of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies
and PE/Health.

Senior School
Students in Years 11 to 13 are offered a wide
selection of subjects as they begin to specialize in
their strengths and interests. In Year 11, students
are required to take English, Science, Mathematics
and Social Sciences, and choose 2 additional options. In
Years 12 and 13 students have more choice about
their options, as they are guided into career
pathways.

PB4L - POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING

PB4L is a Ministry of Education programme where students are taught appropriate behaviour that will ultimately
benefit their learning and achievement.
This is an international programme based around the idea that behaviour changes as circumstances change.
We have a Rewards programme that operates all of the time and acknowledges the children positive behaviour.
We also have a card system that warns children of negative choices they make.

 Japanese Cultural Exchanges
For the past few years we have been honoured to host several Japanese schools who visit New Zealand on a cul-
tural exchange. The visits take place several times a year and are a real highlight of the year for our students.
The Japanese students arrive to a traditional Powhiri welcome then rotate around the school learning the haka
and stick games and teaching our students origami and Japanese songs. We are
Facebook friends with a lot of ex visitors who really seem to embrace the Kiwi
 experience.

Music
Tuition is available for a variety of musical instruments via our Itinerant Music Programme (available for free).
There are many opportunities for students to perform, such as the school band, Achievers Assemblies and Prize-
givings. Students can also join the Putāruru School of Music for a small fee which offers lessons after school.
