Inspiration from the past, learning, contributing, empowering for today and tomorrow Issue 3, 5 o Poutū-te-rangi o 2021 Message from Our Tumuaki Tēnā koutou. 2021 has certainly started well despite the ongoing changes to the COVID-19 Alert Levels. Thank you for your support with the changes - coping with last minute postponements and cancellations can be unnerving, especially at the start of the year when we are building relationships and connecting with our students and whānau. Once again, our staff and students are to be commended on how they are taking all of this in their stride. It is our "new normal" and we are all aware of the importance of keeping everyone safe. The latest information regarding COVID-19 Alert Levels can be found on our website: nghs.school.nz Our annual Founders’ Day Assembly was a wonderful occasion with a large number of students honoured for their fantastic NCEA results for 2020. Congratulations to our 19 students who attained scholarships in a wide range of subjects - this is the pinnacle of achievement. Our Founders’ Day is a special occasion weaving the past with the present. Acknowledging our past gives us a sense of connection and a sense of belonging. At the Assembly we had Penny Madden - President of our Old Girls' Association - cut the cake with one of our youngest students, Lilly Miller. We also presented our 2021 prefects with their badges. We wish them all the very best in their leadership roles. It was wonderful to be able to celebrate Founders' Day with our whānau. Our Year 9 students have completed their week of orientation activities called "Good Learner Week". The aim is to assist them in their transition to secondary schooling at Napier Girls' High School. Their activities were underpinned by our 2021 theme, Mahi Ngātahi, as well as our school core values of Manaakitanga - Respect/Caring, Kairangi Whaiaro - Personal Excellence, and Whanaungatanga - Relationships and Connections. An overview of the workshops they participated in can be found further in this newsletter. The week ended with a day of team-building activities at Guthrie Smith. Our seniors also interacted with our Year 9s during the week, with the Prefects hosting a school carnival at lunchtime. We look forward to connecting with our Year 9 whānau once we have a change in Alert Levels. It was lovely to witness House spirit at our recent Swimming Sports event. The day reflected much collaboration and further reflected our theme for 2021, Mahi Ngātahi - Working Together. The level of participation from our students and their behaviour in support of each other is to be commended. Much fun was had by all. I look forward to meeting with you at upcoming events. Road Safety around Napier Girls’ High School Dear Parents and Caregivers, I would like to thank all parents who support our community and our road safety initiative around our school. We have noted less traffic on Clyde Road, but we need all students and parents to be on board. We still have incidents of crowded traffic near the school which are avoidable. Safe points to drop off your daughter/ward are: * Centennial Gardens at the bottom of Coote Road * Our school drop-off zone on Coote Road (white box behind school buses, two minutes parking limit) * The Napier Cathedral All these points are within easy walking distance from our school and most of our students walk these distances on a daily basis. There is no parking opposite the bus lanes between 8-9am and 3-4pm to keep Coote Road safe while buses are operating in this area. It is really helpful for bus drivers and other road users when parents don’t stop on the yellow lines on Thompson Road and Coote Road. Just a reminder also, your daughter needs to seek permission from our school to drive to school. This enables us to give her an induction into keeping herself and others safe when driving to school, including appropriate ways of parking her vehicle which will be much appreciated by our neighbours. Your help with road safety around our school is much appreciated. Mr Philipp Otto, Deputy Principal
