PAGE 2 ISSUE 147 MARCH 2021 THE SHIRE PRESIDENT’S REPORT February 2021 The first week of February I accompanied the CEO and Cr Dwyer to Esperance to introduce our new CEO to members of the Goldfields Esperance Region of Councils at the dinner at the Esperance Yacht Club on the evening of Thursday 4th February. Time was spent on our return journey in Norseman viewing the Dundas Woodland Centre which will officially opened in late March. During February, journeys to and from Kalgoorlie on Goldfields Highway showed the greening of Buffel Grass inducing stock and kangaroos to feed close to the road. Advent of local thunderstorms 17th February with Menzies receiving heavy rain, I urge all road users to exercise extreme caution whilst travelling the road network, particularly during the hours of darkness. Briefing session was held on the 18th that was attended by Cr Dwyer by telephone, Cr Mader and myself in person. The Acting Works Manager Kim Edmeades was introduced to those in attendance. With the opening of the ablutions at the town Truck Bay, the facility has further enhanced provision of first class amenities for Truck drivers. Cr Dwyer and I undertook a comprehensive road trip incorporating Phorphy, Yarri, Mt Celia, Bindah Mine, Lake Carey Crossing, Yundamindra to Kookynie in preparation for the upcoming budget deliberations.
ISSUE 147, MARCH 2021 PAGE 3 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT February 2021 As I write this, I have just completed my second month with the Shire of Menzies. Although it has only been a short time, I’m amazed at the changes that have occurred in the area after a few bouts of rainfall. The contrast between the vibrant green of new growth and the browns of our landscape gives tourists a great experience and offer many opportunities for photography. This is a nice Segway into our new Instagram page, beautiful_menzies , which will showcase photographs of the region. If you want yours added, then send them in to our admin account. Your Council has been busy this month keeping the towns looking great and getting on with some of the projects slated for this financial year. There is a lot of planning that goes into any project and we want to deliver in line with community expectations. Several of our projects involve works to heritage buildings and these must be managed carefully to ensure we maintain the integrity of our assets. The truck stop ablutions block is now open and we are getting great feedback from the drivers utilising the facility. Encouraging people to stop in the towns is critical to building small business. The fences surrounding the facility will come down once safety barriers have been installed. Resheeting of the Menzies NW Road and Evanston Road will commence this month. If you are travelling on these roads, please slow down around the works crews. St. Johns are looking for volunteers for their community ambulance service based in Menzies. There is information on how to join contained in this edition. Near Kookynie, our works crew have been spending some time at Niagara Dam cleaning up and making sure the facilities are ready for the cooler months and subsequent increase in area visitation. Residents who see facilities that are damaged or not clean are encouraged to contact council to get it rectified. Thanks to everyone who has made time to have a chat to me about the communities and life in general. Stop me in the streets if you have any burning issues or drop into the council offices.

PAGE 8 ISSUE 147, MARCH 2021 Ingredients • 114 grams of unsalted butter • 1/3 cup of white sugar • 1 cup of all purpose flour • 1/4 cup of cornflour • 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt Directions Preheat oven to 180 degrees. In a mixer with a paddle attachment, cream together the butter and sugar until light and very fluffy, about five minutes. Sift together the flour, cornflour and salt. Add little by little to the butter mixture until just combined into a dough. On a lightly floured surface, dump out the dough and knead a few times until a firm ball forms. Sprinkle with flour and roll the dough out to 1/4 inch thick. Dust the top of dough with flour, add a piece of thick lace, and gently roll over the lace or doily, making an impression into the dough. Re-move the lace and cut the dough into squares. Add onto a baking sheet with parchment and bake for 15 minutes or until barely golden brown. Irish history in the Goldfields C.Y. O'Connor, the engineer who designed the Goldfields water pipeline, hailed from County Meath in Ireland. Three Mayors of Kalgoorlie and Boulder have been Irish, and in the 1950s the city still held a St Patricks day Parade. The Irish Catholic orders of nuns brought the first schooling and hospital services to the Goldfields in the early days of the gold rush. Prospectors Woodley, Wotten and Lennon first discovered gold near Wiluna on St Patrick’s Day 1896.
ISSUE 147, MARCH 2021 PAGE 9 The Rain has Finally Arrived! February saw some wild, wet and windy weather come through Menzies. Luckily most of the town was spared of any significant water damage however, having had minimum rainfall over the last twelve months this sudden downpour did come as quite a shock to many residents. If you’ve taken any weather related photos around the Menzies area over the last month we love to feature then in the next edition of the Menzies Matters or on our @beautiful_menzies Instagram page. PAGE 10 ISSUE 147, MARCH 2021 The Shire of Menzies staff have commenced the operation of community Badminton games at the Menzies Town Hall. Starting in mid-February and continuing throughout March, the aim of these activities is to engage with the community through physical activity. The turnout to our badminton games so far has been positive. We look forward to operating more evening sporting games throughout 2021. We still have some important COVID safety requirements to follow at the Menzies Town Hall. We ask that all attending these Badminton games check-in using either the Town Hall SafeWA QR code or through our manual sign in. We have a number of hand sanitisers locate around the Badminton court and we ask that attendees wash or sanitize their hands regularly. Physical distancing is still encouraged where achievable.
