She worked as a foreign diplomat with the United Nations in New York City and frequently visited Miami from her home country to visit family and experience a faster way of life. Needless to say, she has a heart for the big city and all it has to Bringing offer. Pasky, a neurologist at Raleigh Hospital, made his first U.S. home in Rochester, Minnesota, conducting multiple sclerosis the World research for three years. “I was at the Mayo Clinic in the winter to West of 2014. As you can imagine, dating in the middle of winter in Rochester presented a bit of a challenge,” he laughs. “I took to Virginia online dating and, from the very first time I spoke with Calisha, I knew she was the one.” The couple talked every day for one year before they met in person in Miami. The southern sun and romance provided the backdrop for yearly meetups until they eloped in New Orleans three years later. Before moving to Glade Springs, they spent two years in Michigan together, while Pasky spent a total of four years completing his neurology training at Michigan State University. “When I started looking at jobs, we traveled a bit through the Midwest,” says Pasky. “One day, I received a call from Dave Shaffer at Raleigh General. I have to say that West Virginia was not even on my list of possibilities, but I am so happy I took the chance to come for a visit,” he says. On their drive back from New Orleans to Michigan, they traveled through North Carolina and passed through Beckley. The couple admits that there was just something about the West Virginia mountains, the green grass, and the rolling roads. “Driving into Glade gets me every time,” says Pasky. “John Sinko did a great job selling Glade to us. Add that to the wonderful people with whom I work and the freedom to practice medicine in an environment that is hands-on, the decision was easy.” The Atangas have a rich extracurricular life in Glade Springs, as they enjoy playing pickleball and golf. Pasky plays with the “Grasshoppers,” and Calisha plays in the Best Ball group. She also stays connected with fitness classes at Performance Fitness and her weekly Mahjong group. This winter, they plan to take up skiing, starting at Winterplace. “The classes and groups here at Glade Springs have helped me stay sane and happy,” says Calisha. “I really feel that I have found my roots here.” In Glade Springs, Pasky has found the ideal setting to perfect his favorite pastime -- flying drones as an FPV (first-person view) certified pilot. “Flying drones gives you the feeling of flying like a bird at 90 miles per hour but a little more safely,” he laughs. He also enjoys making decorative pieces for Calisha and masks with his meet your neighbors 3-D printing studio. Michael recently broke both shoulders and cracked three ribs chasing a shopping cart at the local IGA. “The cart kept going faster, I kept going faster, and the only thing that broke was me. Thank God it wasn’t the two bottles of wine!” he quips. “Clearly this threw our winter plans awry, not to mention Covid, so I said to Richard, ‘Let’s just blow it out for Christmas!’” For Thanksgiving, they traveled to Asheville where Richard became inspired by the candlelight tour of the Biltmore. The home of Michael Quesenberry and Richard Pegler is beautifully appointed and makes one wonder why you would want to be anywhere else for the holidays. Three years later, he purchased the 2.6 acre lot across Lake Drive with the pond. “I always thought Glade owned it, but later found out that it was owed by Jon and Marla Sinko,” he says. “It’s a beautiful amenity and also adds to the aesthetics of the community.” The couple installed a fence and landscape lighting around the pond, and this holiday season, Richard draped the fence with gar- land and ribbon. Vintage-style elements like oil paintings, brass fixtures, and bamboo accents add a bit of nostalgia to this sprawling 7,000 square-foot floor plan. Richard has a masterful way of mixing traditional elements and family pieces while keeping a modern feel. The dining room’s glass table showcases an arched candelabra that complements the ruby red light fix- tures and artwork. The french-coun- try kitchen with terra cotta floors leads the way to the large “breakfast nook” which is anything but a nook. When asked, Michael says this is the room that sold the house for him. With vaulted ceilings and lots of nat- ural light, it is the perfect space for a gathering of friends and family. Richard turns thoughtful when asked about his favorite room. “I love the coziness of the den,” he says. That thoughtfulness shows when he picks up a Christmas gift hand-chosen for the former owner of the house, Tony Kelly. With an additional bedroom and bathroom off the kitchen, two bed- rooms and two dens upstairs, there is plenty of room for guests. “We never go upstairs,” they laugh. “Only to change the filters and check the thermostats.” Stepping outside, we walk through three outdoor spaces which include areas for cooking, nature-watching and entertaining.
