a series of temples appeared, as if out of
nowhere, on the horizon. We realised that
we had arrived at our drive destination –
Pathra. Boasting some of the most exquisite
terracotta temples and relics of West
Bengal, Pathra is a rare site that has been
‘rediscovered’ and is a must-visit for all
history lovers. Also fascinating is the tale
of a man who fought single-handedly to
preserve this heritage, not allowing even his
professed religion to come in the way of his
noble mission.

Route
Enter Kona Expressway through
Vidyasagar Setu and continue straight
ahead. At the end of Kona Expressway
turn left into NH-16 (NH-6). Follow
NH-16 (NH-6) and cross Dhulaghori
Toll Tax, Uluberia, Kolaghat and proceed
towards Kharagpur. At trip 111 km, go
onto a flyover on left to proceed towards
Kharagpur Chowranghee Morh (do not
proceed straight on NH-16 towards the
underpass to Odisha).
Once you reach the huge traffic
roundabout at Chowranghee Morh in
Kharagpur, get into the third exit to enter
NH-14 on extreme right and proceed
towards Chandrakona and Bankura. At
trip 118.2 km, look for Birendra Sasmal
Setu on River Kangsabati. Immediately
after the bridge, at a junction named
Amtala Morh on NH-14, take a hair-pin
bend towards right, leaving the highway.
The road narrows down and goes through
Kadamtala Bazar towards Hathihalka
