WHAT’S THE STORY? If you want to change the world, you have to solve a problem. And for HYDRAGUN, our problem was simple: massage guns are poorly designed. Some are too noisy. Some are too weak. Some are too strong. The list goes on. We heard the same thing from one user after another, and we were amazed at how hard it was to find a massage gun that didn’t make recovery a chore. Turns out there was a simple reason. Massage guns are a relatively new technology. And that means consumers only get two options: either buy from one of the companies that dominate the industry and keep their prices high, or buy from one of the cheap knockoff brands that don’t care about product quality or innovation. HYDRAGUN was created to bridge that gap. We’ve built a high-performance massage gun based on our own experiences and the insights of our users, and by cutting out the traditional “middlemen”, we’re able to provide this thoughtfully-designed premium device at a fair price. And we’re not stopping there. Our next gun, as well as a select suite of supporting products, is already in intensive development. 3
WHO’S THIS FOR? Whether you’re a painter, a programmer, or a pro athlete, hard work takes its toll on the body. That’s why we believe everyone should make recovery a part of their daily life and routine. Most people can’t take an hour out for a massage every day. But just a few minutes with a high-quality massage gun can make a real difference to muscle stiffness and pain. The Hydragun was designed to fit seamlessly into everyday life. It’s quieter than other full-sized guns on the market, so you can use it in a gym, while watching TV, or even during long Zoom meetings. And its speed settings go from comfortable to intense, so you can use it on your slowest days and after your toughest workouts. With the Hydragun, recovery becomes easier, more enjoyable, and more effective — so you can bounce back quicker and continue to perform at your best. 4
HOW DOES IT WORK? Massage guns work through percussive and vibration therapy. A high-torque motor moves the head of the massage gun back and forth rapidly, so it drums or “percusses” deep into the muscles, and sends vibrations through the surrounding tissue. Percussive massage can be traced at least as far back as 1868, with the creation of tapotement, a Swedish massage technique that involves rapid and repeated strikes to the body with the edge of the palm or the tips of the fingers.1 Massage therapists use tapotement to soften tensed tissue, increase blood flow to the tissue, and increase lymphatic drainage. A 2011 University of Wales study also found that this percussive technique enhanced agility performance in athletes, even when applied for just two minutes.2 Modern percussive and vibrational massage devices can be traced back to the 1970s, when Canadian chiropractors invented the “Vibrotoner” — the first electric massager — to help deliver deep percussion and vibration to clients more consistently.3 In 2008, another chiropractor, L.A.-based Jason Wersland, combined the efficiency of older electric massagers with the portability of a hand-held device, thus creating the massage gun as we know it today. 5
There is a small but growing number of controlled experimental studies on percussive massage guns, and a significant and long-standing body of scientific research on vibration therapy. Together, these indicate that massage guns may help to: 1. reduce muscle soreness — that is, decrease pain perception;4 2. reduce stiffness-- that is, increase flexibility or range of motion;5 and perhaps even 3. facilitate recovery from muscle damage — as indicated by a reduction in physiological markers reliably associated with muscle damage, such as blood serum levels of lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase.6 For more on massage gun history, physiology, and technology, contact our media team or a HYDRAGUN scientist or engineer at media@hydragun.com.
