Get meeting schedule & more at www.aamaui.org STEP FOUR “Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.” Aloha A .A .ers, Jimmy James here and still a recovering alcoholic. Right out of the gate with the Step Four of the 12 x12 text. Creation gave us instincts for a purpose. Without them we wouldn’t be complete human beings. So, what instincts makes us complete human beings? The number one desire that we as humans want is to be happy, joyous, and free. Just as described on page 84 in the big textbook to what is called the 9 th step promises. If we are painstaking about this phase of our development. I couldn't have any gain without the pain. That is how it works, not my plans and designs. That there is always the seemly process of de- nial from the obsession defying what we the fellowship know verses what Jimmy James is thinking, if I listen honestly. I will listen to what the “We” is saying and not the what Jimmy James thinks is im- portant. When I only think about myself I bring more pain and suffering from the insanity of the disease. A disease that had more power over me than my Higher Power at the time. I took this process of Step work from the textbook the Big Book of AA from a recovered alcoholic. As stated, “Resentment is the number one offender.” What I need, is to be connected—so We can survive. To be happy and free with creating positive neuron tranzplasticity in keeping myself awaken in conscious contact with my Creator with having spiritual principles that bring serenity and peace. Not for myself but for others, a completely 180 degree change to another degree of change day by day having what I have completed in as having goals and with this process that is begun and to be practiced. Step Four is beginning of lifetime practice, with the importance of thoroughness, and in- ventory reviews relationships. Not how my instincts can exceed their proper function, as ob- sessions. Step Four is the complete and fearless effort to discover our liabilities on paper so I can examine with my sponsor with what is life on life’s terms. Mahalo for listening as seeing :)
Maui Serenity Gazette Page 3 April, 2021 4 “ Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or A.A. as a whole.” OUR DECISIONS AFFECT OTHERS For too long, I thought I was autonomous in my own right; this is also called being self-centered or selfish, with “self-will run riot.” This Tradition helps me understand that I cannot take any actions harmful to others without dire consequences to myself. I learned that nothing was really good unless other people also were considered. If I don’t seek the advice and help of others in matters affecting them, then I again become God in my own life, the exact nature of my wrongs. The one word that characterizes the fourth tradition is the word “decisions.” This tradition teaches me how to make deci- sions and maintain good relationships with God and you at the same time. The traditions show us how to get along with each other. The second half of the fourth tradition teaches me to consult others when I make decisions that affect them. I am not to be a dictator in making decisions that affect other people’s lives (or the community) as I did when I was drink- ing. I need help from others, especially in matters affecting them. My goal is unanimity. If I don’t seek the ad- vice and help of others in matters affecting them, then I again become God in my own life, the exact nature of my wrongs. Step-Tradition Parallel If I don’t seek the advice and help of others in matters affecting them, then I again become God in my own life, the exact nature of my wrongs. The steps help to restore my relationship with God (through inventory among other things) and the traditions show me how to get along with God (and others). I was God in my own life. I was a dictator. With others, I was just the opposite. I sought their approval. The fourth tradition solves this dilemma: I seek to be one with God and to be one with others about matters affecting them. There are certain things that must be done alone with God, such as writ- ing inventory. Writing inventory is an autonomous function. Interesting parallel. TRADITION’S INVENTORY The 12 Traditions were created to help each A.A. group maintain unity and relate better to the world about us. With that in mind, they have been widely used in helping us learn how to be in better relationships with everyone in our life. Below is a snapshot inventory you can take to see how well you are honoring the spiritual principle found in this Tradition (in and out of the rooms of A.A.). The foundation of this inventory is from the A.A. Tradition’s Checklist first published in the A.A. Grapevine. 1. Do I insist that there are only a few right ways of doing things in AA? 2. Does my group always consider the welfare of the rest of AA? Of nearby groups? Of Loners in Alaska? Of Interna- tionalists miles from port? Of a group in Rome or El Salvador? 3. Do I put down other members’ behavior when it is different from mine, or do I learn from it? 4. Do I always bear in mind that, to those outsiders who know I am in AA, I may to some extent represent our entire beloved Fellowship? 5. Am I willing to help a newcomer go to any lengths—his lengths, not mine—to stay sober? 6. Do I share my knowledge of AA tools with other members who may not have heard of them? 7. What “questions” could we ask ourselves before we make a decision to use our autonomy? Does autonomy excuse or justify improper behavior? -- An Anonymous Member

Maui Serenity Gazette Page 5 April, 2021 Spirit of Service in A.A. The good ol’ Service Conversation between my Head and my Hand. Head: “Don't do it Hand. You know we are too busy! Our plate is so full, how can we take on a 2 year commitment when we don't even know what we are doing next week - let alone the next 2 years! Don't do it!” [Hand Raises, accepting a Service Position] Head: “Damn you! You did it again. Well, if we fail it’s all on you.” Hand: “You always go there. ‘What if this, what if that, what if we fail, we’re too busy.’ How many years have we been sober?” Head: “11 years.” Hand: “How many of those years have we been in service?” Head: “11 years.” Hand: “Correct. We have been in service for ALL of our sober life. Remember these positions? BBQ coordinator, Meeting Secretary, Intergroup Rep , Intergroup Chair, Meeting Treasure, Intergroup Treasure? And it always works out! Have some faith! Try not to think about it too much, Head.” Head: “You’re right. I will, I'll try. We got this!”
