The Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) in Marrakech is an independent, not-for-profit contemporary art museum. One of the first of its kind on the continent, MACAAL is dedicated to the promotion of African art through its diverse exhibition and education programmes, cultivating the interest of a wide audience base, including families and students. The museum nurtures an understanding of contemporary art from Africa through collecting and exhibiting established and emerging artists, highlighting the creative energy and cultural diversity found across the continent. MACAAL showcases art from Morocco and its neighbouring countries across a range of media. In addition to the permanent collection, exhibitions focus on art which engages in a dialogue with the continent, including African and international artists. macaal.org
Dear VIP guest, We are pleased to invite you to the international launch of the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) in Marrakech. The international opening of MACAAL will be held on February 24th 2018 and will feature two exhibitions: a group photography show Africa Is No Island and a semi-permanent exhibition comprised of the museum’s general collection. Africa is No Island has been curated to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of photography platform Afrique in Visu. At the invitation of MACAAL, co-founders of Afrique in Visu, Jeanne Mercier and Baptiste de Ville d’Avray, working alongside independent associate curator Madeleine de Colnet have brought together artists who have previously worked with the platform and artists whose works are part of the museum’s collection. The exhibition displays emerging and established photographers who are working from a distinctly African perspective. The artists examine the universally relevant cultural issues of tradition, spirituality, family and the environment within the context of modern African experiences and daily lives. We are thrilled to share with you the VIP programme that will accompany the international launch of MACAAL and the first edition of 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in Marrakech from February 22nd to 25th 2018. Please note that most of the programme’s activities have a limited capacity, so make sure to click on the RSVP box under each activity of your choice. The talk is part of 1-54 FORUM and is curated by Omar Berrada. Filipa César’s Spell Reel is a journey in which fragile film archives that testify to the birth of Guinean cinema, as part of the decolonizing vision of Amílcar Cabral, become a prism from which to view the present. Digitised in Berlin and screened at various locations, the archive spurs debates, storytelling and forecasts. From screenings in isolated villages in Guinea-Bissau to European capitals, the silent reels are now a place from which people may search for antidotes to a world in crisis. Location: Le 18 RSVP
