ed ’s not e Let’s begin again I love a fresh start. Who doesn’t? The idea that every day ahead is a blank page, just waiting to be written on, gives even the most cynical of us a burst of energy. While New Year’s resolutions may be a passé concept – often associated with the guilt of previous years, when you never looked at the bloody list again after making it – I can’t advise scrapping the process of reflection entirely. On the eve of a fresh chapter, deciding what is worth hanging on to in this new year (and what to leave behind) can influence the course of the next 365 days in unexpected ways. One of the phrases I scribbled on my list for 2015 has remained with me ever since: ‘Let go or be dragged.’ You’ve probably heard it a million times before, but that doesn’t make it any less powerful – a reminder of the futility of hanging on to things that do not serve you. This line has inspired me to quit a job, motivated me to move on from disappointments both major and minor, and been a saving grace when things out of my control have gone wrong, as they sometimes do. Hopefully, some of the fascinating features the Marie Claire team created this month will inspire you to set intentions for the year ahead that will have a positive impact on the moments to come. Here are my favourite picks from this issue… 1. ‘How to Achieve Business Zen’ on page 57 reminds us of the importance of aligning your career goals with your life purpose. Definitely something to ponder before returning to your desk this year. 2. In ‘A Beautiful Mind’ on page 36, three women tell us what it’s really like to live with OCD, ADHD and autism. Their stories resonated with many Marie Claire team members, who felt a sense of renewed energy in confronting their own mental health, whatever form it may take. 3. As a rather time-poor individual, I wasn’t surprised by many of the findings in our sex feature (p46), which focuses on the impact of technology on our collective time between the sheets. If love is defined by an action, that action is attention. Starting this year, try loving your other half by giving them your full, undivided attention (in the bedroom too). I love this quote by writer and painter Brian Andreas: ‘Everything changed the day she figured out there was exactly enough time for the important things in her life.’ 4. On page 54 we introduce you to Nneile Nkholise, an engineering entrepreneur using 3D-printing to help women who’ve had mastectomies regain their shape, at no charge. Many believe that the way to happiness is to do more for others. Perhaps the best thing you can do for your state of mind in the new year is to find a way to contribute to your community. 5. Our wellness section (p104) provides you with inspiration for a healthier new year. Plus some very stylish women reveal their guilty pleasures, and I concur with actress Zoe Saldana – a couple of glasses of bubbly after a long week is just the ticket, so I’ll be stocking up for sure. PhotograPh GEORGES ANTONI This first issue in 2018 is also my last as acting editor. Thank you to the brilliant team who creates such insightful content each month – it’s been a privilege to work with you on such an inspiring brand. And to our readers, fans and followers, I wish you the very best for 2018! LIAN LOMBARD, acting editor @compulsive_stylist

filter NEWS AND VIEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD SAUDI ARABIA A step closer to EQUALITY SAUDI WOMEN are finally allowed into sport stadiums S audi women will finally be allowed to enter sport stadiums in selected areas of Saudi Arabia – a huge step forward in realising a more liberal and equal society. Women who wish to watch sport will now be able to do so at stadiums in Jeddah, Dammam and Riyadh. This progress comes shortly after the ban on female drivers was lifted in 2017 (effective June this year). Both rulings are aligned to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s vision for the country by 2030: a liberal nation with a diversified economy. JAN/FEB 2018 MARIECLAIRE.CO.ZA 9
PERU MY MEASUREMENTS ARE... During the competition for the title of Miss Peru 2018, instead of revealing their hip, waist and bust measurements on stage, each of the 23 contestants shared the shocking statistics of violence against women in Peru. The participants wanted the focus to be on the women of their nation rather than themselves. They have been applauded for raising awareness of a crisis plaguing the South American country, and their stand trended on social media under the hashtag #mismedidasson (‘my measurements are’). UNITED STATES TOUCHING THE STARS Peggy Whitson is no stranger to breaking records. In fact, it’s something she’s rather good at. She is not only the first woman to command the International Space Station, she is also the woman with the most space walks, and now, the first person in US history – man or woman – to be in space for a whopping cumulative 665 days. Her journey to the stars has been a long one. It took 10 years and countless applications for her to be accepted into the astronaut programme. astropeggy 10 MARIECLAIRE.CO.ZA JAN/FEB 2018
f i lt er MEXICO THE WOMAN BACKED BY COMMUNITIES AND REBELS ALIKE Not only is Maria de Jesús Patricio Martínez the first indigenous woman to run for the Mexican presidency, she is also a traditional doctor from the Nahua community in the state of Jalisco, and founder of the Calli Tecolhuacateca Tochan health centre. She is determined to conquer corruption, inequality and violence in Mexico, and is backed even by the infamous left-wing militant group Zapatista Army of National Liberation. The election will take place mid-2018 and, although experts doubt she will claim the presidency, it is a sign of changing times that she was able to gain this kind of political momentum in such a short time. HEALING THROUGH COMPILED BY EDWAIN STEENKAMP PHOTOGRAPHS GALLO/GETTY, THOMSON REUTERS FOUNDATION/ BEH LIH YI THE ARTS The atrocities that have occurred in Myanmar have shocked the world, with countless Rohingya refugees fleeing into Malaysia to escape torture, rape and death. But there is a glimmer of hope and a chance to heal owing to a few women who have started the Rohingya Women Theatre in Malaysia. Through performance art, the women are acknowledging their trauma and building confidence, and VATICAN CITY are using the platform to help other refugees to deal with domestic abuse and the shock of being arrested. MYANMAR/MALAYSIA A C O L L A B O R AT I O N F O R T H E H I S T O R Y B O O K S Cecilia Bartoli is the first woman to sing with the legendary Sistine Chapel Choir, in addition to being the first woman to record inside the Vatican City’s most famous chapel. In a truly moving collaboration for Advent and Christmas, Cecilia and the choir performed ‘Beata Viscera’ by thirteenth-century composer Pérotin. JAN/FEB 2018 MARIECLAIRE.CO.ZA 11
