CULTURE + ENTERTAINMENT AI WEIWEI : YOURS TRULY Wednesday, March 11, 7 to 9 pm Presidio Theatre, 99 Moraga Avenue This new documentar y follows postcards generated by thousands of visitors to the exhibition @ Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz and sent to prisoners of conscience around the globe, capturing the tremendous impact these messages had on their recipients and their causes. Followed by a talk with the film’s director, Cher yl Haines, founder of the FOR-SITE Foundation. ART GUIDED ART HIKE : ANDY GOLDSWORTHY IN THE PRESIDIO 2nd Saturdays: March 14, April 11, and May 9, 10:30 am to 1 pm This guided hike visits four installations by the world-renowned artist: Spire (2008 ) , Wood Line (2010 ) , Tree Fall (2013) , and Earth Wall (2014). The three-mile hike is moderate with a few uphill stretches and surfaces that include sand and rocky areas. Rain or shine. Registration is Spire Wood Line required: w w w.presidio.gov/events. MEMORIAL DAY COMMEMORATION Memorial Day – Monday, May 25 The Presidio Trust, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the City of San Francisco invite you to the official City and County of San Francisco Memorial Day Obser vance. The ceremony will honor the one million Americans killed while ser ving in the U.S. armed forces and will connect the public to the commitment and sacrifices made by militar y personnel, veterans, and their families. HISTORY TOURS + EXPERIENCES PRESIDIO OFFICERS’ CLUB TOUR Saturdays at 11 am Presidio Officers’ Club, 50 Moraga Avenue On this guided tour of the Presidio’s histor y museum, hear stories about the fort’s founding in 1776, its adobe walls, seafaring scientists, Buffalo Soldiers, Army nurses, secret Japanese language school, Vietnam-era dissenters, and more. GUIDED WALKING TOUR OF THE MAIN POST March 5, 12 and 26; April 2, 9 and 23; and May 7, 14 and 28, 1 to 3 pm Presidio Officers’ Club, 50 Moraga Avenue The Main Post’s histor y comes alive on this two-hour guided walking tour. Learn about the Presidio’s layered past through the stories of the people and places that have shaped it. The walk is on paved surfaces with some moderate inclines and uneven sections. PRESIDIO E XPERIENCE TOUR 3rd Thursdays: March 19, April 16, and May 21, 1 to 3 pm Presidio Visitor Center, 210 Lincoln Boulevard Get to know the Presidio during this two-hour, in-depth experience. Start with a scenic shuttle ride around the park filled with illuminating stories about the Presidio’s past and present. Then enjoy a brief optional hike down the Ecology Trail ending at the Officers’ Club for a deeper dive into the people and events that have shaped the Presidio since 1776. ARCHAEOLOGY IN ACTION Fridays and Saturdays, 10 am to 2 pm, April 24 through October 17 Outside the Presidio Officers’ Club, 50 Moraga Avenue There is an active archaeology dig in the Presidio, and it’s open to visitors to watch the action! Our archaeology team is working on a long-term project to excavate El Presidio de San Francisco, the old Spanish fort buried in front of the Presidio Officers’ Club. PRESIDIO DISCOVERY: ARCHAEOLOGY TOUR First Saturdays: March 7, April 4, and May 2 at 1 pm Presidio Officers’ Club, 50 Moraga Avenue Explore the rich histor y of the Presidio as it is discovered ever y day through archaeology. You will see the standing Spanish adobe in the Presidio Officers’ Club before heading to the active dig site to meet Presidio archaeologists. The tour concludes at the state-of-the-art lab and collections facility where artifacts are studied to reveal the hidden stories of the indigenous Ohlone, Spanish, Mexican, and American families who have called the Presidio home. WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH AT THE PRESIDIO VISITOR CENTER In honor of Women’s Histor y Month, throughout March the Presidio Visitor Center will feature retail items that celebrate strong women who’ve shaped our countr y’s histor y. REL NATURE E V E AT E D NTS POETRY RE ADING - THE FIRE THIEVES : RESTORING THE SPRING Saturday, April 11, 2 to 3:30 pm Presidio Officers’ Club, 50 Moraga Avenue Photo ©2019 Doug Salin San Francisco Poet Laureate Kim Shuck, who belongs to the northern California Cherokee diaspora, curates an intergenerational poetr y reading in celebration of the Presidio’s El Polín Spring. Participating poets range from established superstars like Jennifer Barrone and Maw Shein Win to emerging underrepresented youth. Kim Shuck is a Tsalagi (Cherokee)/Euro-American poet, author, weaver, and bead work artist who draws from Southeastern Native American culture and tradition as well as contemporar y urban Indian life. Shuck currently ser ves as the poet laureate of San Francisco, and in 2019, she was named an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow. GUIDED WALK AT EL POLÍN SPRING Saturday, April 11, 12:30 to 1:30 pm El Polín Spring (end of MacArthur Avenue) This guided walk explores El Polín Spring and the peoples, flora, and fauna who have thrived around this restored water way for centuries. Led by Presidio Trust historian Dr. Barbara Berglund Sokolov and archaeologist Kari Jones, the walk invites guests to hear the stories embedded in the landscape and take in the creek’s sights and sounds. Half-mile walk on boardwalk, unpaved trail, and sidewalks. This walk is the per fect introduction to The Fire Thieves poetry reading at 2 pm, but please register for each event separately. SPECIAL EXHIBITION EXCLUSION : THE PRESIDIO’S ROLE IN WORLD WAR II JAPANESE AMERICAN INCARCERATION Tuesdays to Sundays, 10 am to 5 pm Presidio Officers’ Club, 50 Moraga Avenue During World War II, the Presidio of San Francisco—the Army’s Western Defense Command—played a pivotal role in the unjust incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans, purportedly in the name of national security. This special exhibition invites visitors to investigate the choices—both personal and political—that led to this dark chapter in American histor y, and to reflect on what we have learned that helps us to address present-day issues of mass incarceration, immigration reform, and racial profiling. In developing E XCLUSION, the Presidio Trust collaborated with the Fred T. Korematsu Institute and the National Japanese American Historical Society . NATURE + SCIENCE CIT Y NATURE CHALLENGE 2020 @ THE PRESIDIO Saturday, April 25, 10 am to 1 pm Bring the family and team-up with experienced naturalists and scientists to learn about Mountain Lake’s flora, fauna, and restoration. Using the free iNaturalist app, take photos and record your obser vations of wild plants and animals in order to generate data for scientists and help San Francisco compete with over 200 communities around the world in the City Nature Challenge.
