Together for Short Lives What does Together for Short Lives do? Together for Short Lives is the leading UK charity for all children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions and all those who support, love and care for them, including all 49 children’s hospices. Our work helps to ensure that children can get the best possible care, wherever and whenever they need it. There are 49,000 children and young people in the UK living with a life-threatening or life- limiting condition. We represent all these children, their families and the children’s hospices they rely upon. When children are unlikely to reach adulthood, we aim to make a lifetime of difference for them and their families. We do this by: • Raising essential funds for children’s hospice services across the UK, helping them to continue to provide vital, free support. • Supporting children’s hospice care teams, helping them to provide the highest standards of care. • Providing a strong and unified voice, making sure the voice of families and services is heard by government and the media.
Children’s hospice services Hearing the news that your child has a health condition that is life-threatening or will shorten their life is every parent’s worst nightmare. Sadly some children will die when they are very young; others will deteriorate slowly over a number of years. In most cases, full-time care falls to the parents – 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The families affected are under huge emotional, physical and financial strain. What is a children’s hospice? Local children’s hospice services are there from the moment of diagnosis - they provide flexible, practical and free support at home and in the hospice to the entire family, often over many years and throughout the child’s illness. Each children’s hospice covers a wide community and through the network of 49 children’s hospice services the whole of the UK is supported. Children’s hospices welcome the whole family for a break in friendly, homely surroundings and also provide practical help in people’s own homes. They offer a wide range of support and therapies for children and their families, including: • Short breaks and daytime activities enabling families to get a rest. • Help with the control of pain or other distressing symptoms. • Support for family members, including brothers and sisters and even grandparents. • Bereavement support for the entire family. • Various therapies including play therapy, music therapy and hydrotherapy. All the money you raise will be allocated to the cost of nursing care at your local children’s hospice supporting the direct delivery of care to children and families in your community. 3
Every penny counts £1 could provide an oxygen mask for a child. It costs around £5 to change a child’s drip and £10 can help provide an hour of nursing care. £21 could provide an hour of arts and crafts with an art therapist and £25 provides an hour of music therapy. £500 could pay for a short break for the whole family at a children’s hospice, providing some much needed rest and family time. £7,500 could run a hospice minibus for one year allowing for special outings for children and families. £30,000 could fund a children’s hospice nurse for an entire year. Frazer's story At just eight weeks old, cheeky little Frazer was critically ill with a brain infection. As a result he now has extensive brain damage, a cerebral shunt to control the swelling of his brain, and a rare form of epilepsy known as West Syndrome. The right side of his body is extremely weak which means he can’t use his right arm. Along with his family - sister Imogen, five, brothers Finley, eight and Rory, nine, mum Katie and dad Keith - stayed at Little Havens Children’s Hospice for a respite break for the first time just before Christmas in 2010. Katie says, “Frazer gets confused very easily in different environments which is made worse when lots of people are about but Little Havens provides a safer, calmer place for Frazer to enjoy himself. We have absolutely fallen in love with it there. It really is the small things, like being able to go swimming together as a family that make a huge difference. The kids love splashing about together and can’t do that in any other pool. That is what makes Little Havens extra special to us. “We worry what the future holds for Frazer but just being at Little Havens is enough of a break. It helps to take away some of the extra strains on us as a family because of Frazer’s various conditions. It means we can make special family memories and knowing that we can all be in one place together makes the hospice the little haven it is.”
