March 2021 CELL COVERAGE IN WAIRAU VALLEY The Rural Connectivity Group (RGC), www.thercg.co.nz, has recently put up two mobile towers. They are Wairau Valley and Wairau Valley west. These towers should have brought cell phone coverage to the town. However, there seems to be some instances where people still don't have adequate coverage. The limited coverage may be caused by many different factors. The RGC would like to help us solve this issue. To do that they need some information. Jo Batt-Rawden will be coordinating the collection of information on behalf of the RCG. The information will be collated and passed onto the RGC. Information collected will not be used for any other purpose. Please email jo.batt.rawden@gmail.com the following information: Customer name Home address Provider Device make Device model Mobile number Can you make voice calls from inside your home, at your address? Can you make voice calls from outside your home, at your address? Can you use data from your home address? Information needs to be emailed through to Jo by the 31st of March 2021. If you do not have email then you can contact Jo on 03 572 2921 or Lynne on 03 572 2535. ART WAIRAU VALLEY EXHIBITION ART Wairau Valley would like to thank everyone who made the recent exhibition a success. 15 local artists plus local school children took part and submitted over 100 works for display. Marlborough art expert Toni Gillan came and formally opened the exhibit on Friday 26 February. The exhibition which took place over three days was well attended by hundreds of locals and visitors. The winner of the people's choice art award was : Rebekah Nafe for her work ‘Porthole of Perspective - SS Kennedy’ (the prize - an $80 voucher donated by Seymour Art Supplies). The winner of the youth encouragement award was Ivy Hale (the prize - a trophy and $100 kindly donated by the Wairau Valley News). A special thank you to Cliff Smith for exhibiting some of his extensive art collection and offering art works for sale with the proceeds being divided between the Wantwood Community Room and the Marlborough IHC. Thank you to our sponsors - Creative Communities Fund, Renwick Supervalue, Imagine Signs, Seymour Art Supplies, REAP Marlborough, Antony Laycock, Wairau Valley News and the Wairau Valley Hall Board. We also appreciated Jock the Postie's help in distributing advertising flyers and Nicola from Verve Flowers for providing gorgeous fresh arrangements. Last and not least, thank you to all the artists, including the children of Wairau Valley School for making the event so vibrant, interesting and beautiful. Thanks Kate and Angela (Organisers). We thank REAP Marlborough for their continued support in the printing of this Newsletter.
Things are progressing on the water upgrade front and Marlborough District Council are looking at a start date in April. Initial works will be the construction of a water treatment plant on land adjacent to the Golf Course pump shed. This will give a guaranteed supply, cleaner and free from contaminants. Initially this will be for current users but new users on the south side of SH63 will be considered. Break out the champagne, or Sav at the least, work has started on Church Lane bridge with completion in late April. This will also incorporate a pedestrian lane for the loop track. Contracts have been let for the infamous Loop Trak and full work is due to be started next month. Watch for more information on a Civil Defence training day, probably after harvest, this is your community and help is much appreciated. Mike Nesbit - Chair WVRRA Celebrating Children’s Day with Teddy Bears! ‘Ted’s Big Day Out’ is a teddy bear themed public picnic and programme of fun activities to celebrate Children’s Day in Marlborough. Children and their families (and their teddy bears) are invited to the free event, organised by Barnardos, on 21st March from 12 to 4 pm at Pollard Park, Blenheim. Highlights of the day include a giant water slide, fun games and activities with a teddy bear theme, balloon animals, colouring in plus some live music from the Marlborough District Brass Junior Band and other local musicians. Everyone is welcome and reminded to BYO picnics, blankets, togs and towels. Barnardos is coordinating the event and will be joined by other community groups keen to celebrate Marlborough tamariki and their whānau. Children’s Day is an opportunity for families, and communities to celebrate and nurture the children of New Zealand. The day is as much a celebration of children as an opportunity to engage all of New Zealand to think about their responsibility to support the lives of tamariki in their communities. You don’t have to be a parent or child to be part of ‘Ted’s Day Out’ and Children’s Day celebrations – it’s a open to all. Everyone can help children thrive. Obviously should the Covid level change again for the worse, this date will be reconsidered. As the weather is getting cooler, we might substitute the water slide for a dry one – but will decide closer to the time. Fingers crossed it will be able to go ahead on 21 March. WAIRAU VALLEY COMMUNITY STALL Everyone is enjoying the array of summer fruits and vegetables we've had on offer at the food stall. Perhaps you have a favorite recipe to use up the last of the summer harvest. If you would like to share one, jump onto the WV Community Stall facebook page. Even better if it's a preserve or relish, so that we can continue to enjoy them in the winter months! As well as produce, you can swap seeds, plants and non-perishables too. The stall is there to take what you need and give what you can, so if you don't have anything to swap there is an honesty box for donations that go back to the community. LOOKING FOR COMMUNITY FEEDBACK: Tai Chi classes currently held in the WV Hillersden Hall, Tues 4:30pm may move to Wednesday evenings as a more convenient time, especially for local folks who work in Blenheim. The time slot is open for discussion - any time from 5pm onwards. All are welcome, including new beginners. A great way to shift gears at the end of the day, renewing energy and increasing relaxation. If sufficient numbers are not reached (a minimum of 5 regulars) WV classes will be adjourned and those working in town can instead attend a Thursday 5:15pm class at Redwoodtown Hall or Pollard Park on pleasant summer evenings. If you want Tai Chi to remain in the Valley, please contact Nancy Sherwood regarding your preferred hour on a Wednesday - 572 2884 or email lasfronteras@xtra.co.nz
