HAYLEY’S RINK OUTDOOR ICE NEWS MARCH 2021 Sunny skies and higher than average temperatures throughout the entire month of January proved quite a boon for outdoor skating enthusiasts who enjoyed near perfect ice conditions throughout the month. Skating patterns which were set during the Christmas season continued through January and skaters were diligent in managing Covid-19 regulated maximum capacities. Volunteers who start to clean and flood the rinks before sunrise reported skaters arriving well before their shift was complete and waited patiently to skate on fresh ice. Haley’s Rink was honoured this year to be chosen as a training and practice site for the Calgary Grizzlies Speed Skating Club. While focusing on young skaters ranging in age from 3 to 16, the club offers training, coaching, practice and programs for speed skaters of all ages. Prior to the formation of clubs such as the Grizzlies just 4 years ago, speed skating in Calgary was generally limited to and centered on the Olympic Oval and their advance competitive (AC) class of skaters. Marnie, a Director and Administrator for the Grizzlies, is passionate about the sport and states: “The goal of the Club is to develop a community of skaters and promote the sport of speed skating in Calgary in a competitive and non-competitive environment. Youth who develop the skill and have the time and interest in speed skating can, if they choose, advance to the AC program at the Olympic Oval.” The Grizzlies have reserved the ice on the large hockey rink for their junior speed skaters from 10 to 11 am Saturdays and Sundays through to the end of the outdoor skating season. Their fees will help offset some of the water, electricity and fuel costs associated with operating these well used winter recreation facilities. The general public is welcome drop by to watch and enjoy the speed and grace of these budding young skaters and can of course use the pleasure rink and smaller pond hockey rinks during these times. Silver Springs prides itself in maintaining some of the best outdoor skating facilities in the city thanks to seven teams of 4 to 6 volunteers of all ages who sweep and flood the rinks daily throughout the winter. If interested in partaking in this rewarding volunteer ice making experience, please contact Jeremy Gukert at 403-805-2570. Calgary Grizzlies Speed Skaters – Saturdays & Sundays 10 to 11 am. WHAT IS A COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION? Your community association is a non-profit, volunteer organization that represents the interests and meets the needs of the residents within the community … your needs! I DON’T USE THE PROGRAMS OR THE COMMUNITY CENTRE … WHY SHOULD I JOIN??? Your community association needs your support even if you don’t make use of the programs offered because you benefit directly from the work your community association does: Your membership fee supports affordable, local programs that help keep your community healthy and attractive to old and new residents alike. Children learn social and leadership skills through community programs, which help them to become responsible, productive adults. Special needs groups receive important support through community associations. If your neighborhood is faced with a planning issue, from transportation to zoning, your community association can help protect the interests of the community. The cost of building and maintaining facilities is considerable. Your membership fees are an important part of your community association’s fundraising effort. At the Silver Springs Community Association we believe membership fees are a small price to pay for the many hours your community association volunteers contribute to make your neighborhood a better place to live. Yeah, but….WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME? You’ll enjoy a healthier community through the efforts of a well-supported community association. As a member, you’ll have a say your community association’s priorities as we progress into the future. THE SILVER SPRINGS SPIRIT MARCH 2021 15

CALGARY PARKS SURVEY! Twelve Mile Coulee is a natural area park located in northwest Calgary with two off-leash areas and numerous hiking and biking trails. In 2021 The City of Calgary will be starting a trail restoration project taking place in the spring and fall. The City of Calgary is looking for feedback from Calgarians to get views and input on the intensity of trail use and potential safety concerns on the trails. A citizen engagement survey via the Engage portal will be open for input from March 1 to March 28, 2021. 12 Mile Coulee will remain open to Calgarians during the trail restoration projects. Trails will not be closed without being replaced by an improved trail or rerouted trail. The City of Calgary will decide which trail projects to pursue in 12 Mile Coulee by considering the engagement survey feedback, technical analysis and budgetary constraints. The engagement survey is open to all Calgarians for feedback and The City encourages Calgarians to visit calgary.ca/12MileTrails to find out more. Youth Biathlon in Alberta Did you know that every week, over 40 children, aged 9-12, practice the sport of biathlon on the Confederation Park Golf Course right here in Calgary? These energetic young athletes use completely safe, EcoAims camera-based rifles to practice skiing and shooting in the heart of the city. The ski trails on the golf course offer them a place to work on their conditioning and technique and a small EcoAims range allows them to practice the other part of their biathlon event. Biathlon is a sport that evolved from traditional skiing and hunting practices. Athletes must ski for a set distance and then enter a firing range where they take 5 shots at 5 targets. Each miss will earn them a penalty loop before they ski and shoot again. The sport requires athleticism combined with a mindfulness that allows a competitor to slow down enough to shoot accurately between skiing bouts. Alberta is home to many biathletes who have competed for Canada at World Cup and Olympic events, many of whom got their start in biathlon in Calgary. Ten biathletes from Alberta, 6 youth athletes and 4 junior athletes, are in Obertilliach, Austria representing Team Canada at the Youth/Junior World Championship for Biathlon which was held at the end of February/beginning of March. In addition, there are 2 more athletes from out of province who train in Alberta, on this Canadian Team. That makes an impressive 12 out of 16 members of the Team training in Alberta! Many of those started in a Biathlon Bears program, just like the ones running on the golf course this year. These young athletes practice between one and three times a week, depending on the program. They learn ski technique and work on whole body conditioning by doing skiing workouts as well as playing games. The EcoAims rifles use a combination of an infrared light and a camera. There are no projectiles nor lasers so the EcoAims firing range is inherently safe! Regardless, the children are taught firearms safety and treat these tools as if they were firearms. This allows them to develop safe habits which they will need if they continue to progress in biathlon. Older athletes train on the golf course as well as at the Canmore Nordic Centre where they can use .22 rifles on the biathlon range. As Bears progress to the higher levels, they will learn more about firearms while also increasing the amount and intensity of their training. With the cooperation of the City of Calgary Parks department and Golf Course Operations group, Foothills Nordic Ski Club is able to offer this great opportunity for children to learn and train in the sport of biathlon at this great, inner-city venue known as thé Confederation Park Golf Course.
