COURSE OVERVIEW This qualification applies to people working in maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency in the capacity of: • chief engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion power
UNITS OF COMPETENCY L I C E N S I N G / R E G U L A T O R Y UNIT UNITS OF COMPETENCY INFORMATION CODE This qualification is required to obtain an AMSA certification BSBTWK201 Work effectively with others as a Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal NC as defined in the National Standard for Commercial Vessels HLTAID011 Provide First Aid (NSCV) Part D. AMSA certification will require: Maintain marine internal combustion • achieving MAR30821 Certificate III in Maritime Operations MARB031 engines, propulsion plant and auxiliary (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 NC) systems • sea service consisting of: Undertake basic maintenance of MARB032 • 180 days qualifying sea service and a completed AMSA electrical systems approved task book or MARC033 Complete engine room tasks • 360 days qualifying sea service ** MARC034 Maintain hull out of water or • 120 days qualifying sea service and a completed AMSA Operate and maintain extra low and approved task book, while holding a Coxswain 1 (Cox 1), MARC035 low voltage electrical systems and Coxswain 2 endorsed for 500 kW inboard propulsion equipment (Cox 2 500 kW), or Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 (MED 3) or MARC036 Operate deck machinery • 240 days qualifying sea service while holding a Cox 1, Operate marine internal combustion Cox 2 500 kW or MED 3 MARC039 engines, and propulsion and auxiliary or systems • 90 days qualifying sea service and a completed AMSA approved task book while holding a workshop skill MARC040 Manage fuel systems equivalent qualification Operate and monitor marine internal or MARC041 combustion engines, propulsion plant • 180 days qualifying sea service while holding a workshop and auxiliary systems skill equivalent qualification MARC042 Operate electrical systems • meeting the medical and eyesight requirements specified in the NSCV Part D and assessment by an AMSA Apply basic survival skills in the event of approved assessor using the AMSA mandated practical MARF027 vessel abandonment assessment (AMPA). ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES will be undertaken. The assessments may consist of written projects, picture portfolios, quizzes, assignments and exams. Knowledge Review Assessments , which will not count to the final assessment but must be completed before the student can move to the next section 2. Final Assessments, which will assess a students Knowledge Competence. • Students are allowed three (3) submissions in total (initial submission and two (2) resubmissions) for each assessment • If you are deemed to be Not Competent (NC) in a unit (after three (3) theory or three (3) practical assessment attempts or due to disciplinary action) you will need to re-enrol in that unit and pay the unit enrolment fee to be able to re-attempt the unit assessment • A QMTS Training Assessor may contact a student by phone after an unsuccessful second submission to provide additional training to assist the student to complete the third submission, which may be conducted orally over the phone.
