General information LiFePo4 The lithium-iron-phosphate technology (LiFePO4) is the safest of the family of lithium-ion technologies. It is high-current resistant, universally applicable and has a low weight compared to lead based batteries. In addition, the latest lithi- um-iron technology offers a high degree of intrinsic safety, so that there is no risk of explosion even under the most extreme conditions. A 12.8V LiFePO4 bat- tery consists of 4 single cells connected in series, each with a nominal voltage of 3.2V. A built-in battery management system (BMS) also reliably protects the battery cells from damage. • High safety • High-current resistant • Allows high power charging • Less weight, compared to lead based batteries • All mounting positions possible • High-/low temperature • Temperature stable • Over 3000 cycles at 80% DoD • 100% maintenance free • 1:1 replaceable to lead based batteries • Environment friendly, no lead, no acid 8

Battery-Management-System (BMS) The battery management system is designed to save the Battery cells from dangerous operation status. The main functions will be explained below. Overcurrent protection: The BMS switches off the battery outputs in case of overload, to protect the cells. The battery has no voltage at this point, after disconnecting the device which generated the overload, the battery resets by itself. Overdischarge protection: Each cell will be checked against overdischarge by itself. If the battery out- puts are switched off as a result, they can only be released again by charging. Attention: The BMS protects the cells from deep discharge during active use, a deactivated or empty battery, which is not charged for a longer period of time, could be damaged by its low but existing self-discharge (3% per month). Note: A battery that has been completely discharged should be charged as soon as possible! Note: Even small loads such as Alarm systems, relays or standby systems consu- me capacity and discharge your battery. If the battery is not used for a long time, ensure that it is disconnected from the system by disconnecting the positive pole. Overvoltage protection: LiFePO4 battery cells are not allowed to charge above 3.60V/cell and 14.4V/bat- tery, otherwise the cells will be destroyed by overvoltage. Therefore only suita- ble chargers with an end-of-charge voltage of 14.4V may be used to charge the LiFePO4 batteries. The BMS protects the cells from overcharging, but it has to absorb the electricity itself. This is possible for a short time, but not permanently. Note: A permanently too high charging current above 14.4V can damage the BMS! 10
Overtemperature protection: The LiFePO4 cells are monitored by the BMS over a temperature sensor. The BMS constantly checks, that the temperature does not reach over 70°C. If it does, the System switches off the output of the battery. To enable the output again, the battery has to cool down first. For this purpose, no power may be drawn or charged for up to 30 minutes. The BMS also controls the temperature itself. If it heats up to over 90°C, the system switches off for its own protection. The output can only be enabled again after it has cooled down. For this purpose, no power may be drawn or charged for up to 30 minutes! Short circuit production: In case of a short circuit, the BMS switches off the output terminals immedi- ately to protect the cells from critical damage. If the short circuit is removed, the BMS resets the terminals automatically. This reset could take up to 30min. 11
Installation/ assembly instructions Installation: When installing the RKB Smart Battery, always ensure that the battery is fixed tightly. The battery can be fixed with straps as well as with brackets. It is recommended to mount the battery in a standing or lying position. Please never mount the battery upside down. Terminal/ Assembling: The RKB Smart Battery usually has a M8 screw-terminal or a car connector co- nus. If necessary, it can be converted by using an adapter. It is recommended to install a fuse as a second protection unit. It could be pos- sible that there is still a fuse install the System. In both casess make sure that the fuse is adapted to the performance of the battery. „Single-mode“ If the RKB Smart Battery is running on single mode, pay attention to the polarity of the Terminals. Also make sure that the cable dimensions are suitable to the performance of the battery. To avoid voltage drop, design the cable length as short as possible. 12
Charge controller & load + - 12 V RKB Smart Battery Attention! Never use a damaged battery! Pay attention to the polarity of the battery! 13
„Parallel-mode“ In parallel operation, it is possible to connect any number of RKB Smart Bat- teries of the same type, capacity and age in parallel. It must be ensured that all batteries are fully charged „individually“ before the first start-up. To ensure that all batteries are optimally charged, the positive connection of the load should be connected to the first battery in the parallel connection and the negative connection of the load to the last battery in the parallel connec- tion. The cable cross-sections should also be adapted to the system power and the cables should be kept as short as possible to minimise voltage drop. 14

General use information Charging Only charge the RKB Smart Battery with a suitable charger which uses CC/CV charging mode. Note that not every Motorhome charger is suitable for use with LiFEPo4 Batteries! Chargers with different charging programs must be set to „LiFe“ or “LiFePO4”. If the setting is not availible, please check the charger manual, how a LiFePo4 battery should be charged. You are also welcome to contact us to double-check your charger. An incorrectly set charger will destroy your battery! CC/CV charging The RKB smart Battery should be charged CC/CV-mode. This charging procedure is based on two parts, the constant current mode (CC) and the constant voltage mode (CV). In the first CC-mode the battery is charged with a constant current till the vol- tage rises to 14,6V (charge voltage) then the charger switches to CV-mode and hold the charge voltage. The nominal charging current will drop more and more until it arrives at 0A. Then the charging cycle is finished. Attention! An incorrectly set charger could destroy the Battery! 16
Discharging While discharging the RKB Smart Battery it is protected via the BMS system, but it should be ensured that the load limits of the individual types are com- plied with as listed below: 50Ah 100Ah 150Ah 200Ah Nominal capacity 50Ah 100Ah 150Ah 200Ah Energy 640Wh 1280Wh 1920Wh 2560Wh cell technology LiFePo4 LiFePo4 LiFePo4 LiFePo4 Nominal voltage 12,8V 12,8V 12,8V 12,8V Working voltage 10,0 to 14,8 V 10,0 to 14,8 V 10,0 to 14,8 V 10,0 to 14,8 V Discharge cut off voltage 10V 10V 10V 10V continuous discharge 50A 100A 150A 200A current Peak discharge current 100A 200A 300A 400A max. 5 sec. max. 5 sec. max. 5 sec. max. 5 sec. continuous discharge 640Wh 1280Wh 1920Wh 2560Wh capacity Ppeak discharge power 1280Wh 2560Wh 3480Wh 5120Wh max. 5 sec. max. 5 sec. max. 5 sec. max. 5 sec. max. 5 sec. Discharging It is also advisable to set devices which are connected to the battery (e.g. inver- ters) if possible to a discharge voltage of 10.5-11.0V in order to ensure enough tolerance between the switch-off values. If the BMS switches off due to under- voltage, please charge the battery immediately. To increase standby time, it is recommended to use a separator when the bat- tery is not in use. This prevents the battery from being discharged be the stand- by currents of connected devices. Protect the battery from direct sunlight on hot summer days and ensure ade- quate ventilation. It also makes sense to insulate the battery against frost in winter. Both measures are not absolutely necessary, but will help to extend the lifetime of your RKB Smart Battery. Attention! If the battery switches off due to undervoltage, please charge the battery immediately. 18
Storage The following points help to increase the lifetime of your Smart Battery while storing it: • Never charge the battery to 100% before a long storage time. The best storage capacity is around 50-70%. • Disconnect all loads from the battery to prevent the battery from dischar- ge currents while in storage. • Protect the battery terminals with a cover against short circuit. • If the LiFePO4 battery is stored for a longer period, it must be checked and recharged to 50-70% every year! • Low temperatures down to -20°C don´t damage the battery, so in most cases it is not necessary to remove the battery from the motorhome. But you should ensure that very cold batteries are slowly adapted to higher temperatures. If the battery is heated up to quickly, it could be damaged from condensation water inside the housing. Attention! Never use a maintenance charger with a “floating” or “pulse” current while storing the battery. 19
Maintenance and care Inspection • Periodically check that your cables and contacts are tight, have no deforma- tion, cracks or damage! • Check the battery housing for damage. Never charge or discharge a damage dbattery. Please get in contact with RKB to verify functionality. • If the discharging or charging time changes significantly in relation to the new condition, the battery should be checked or replaced due to its opera- ting age! • Periodically check the state of charge, is the battery below 10% please char- ge the battery. The self discharge rate of a LiFEPo4 battery could be up to 3% per month, provided there is no load connected. • Consider replacing the LiFePO4 battery, when the useable capacity drops under 80% of the design capacity Cleaning For external cleaning of the box use a dry cotton cloth. Do not clean inside the box! Note: Do not clean the battery wet or with chemicals. 20
Recycling The battery system should not be disposed with normal household waste. Modules, packages and spare parts have to be disposed with the legal regula- tions of the country by where the battery was installed.
