From the President’s Desk Namaskar Mandali It gives me immense pleasure, as the president of the most prestigious organisation for Maharashtrians in the UK, in presenting to you our Ganeshotsav Program for our 30th Year. We would love you all to celebrate this auspicious event with us. Last year we held several programs to encourage social gatherings. But sadly, we were unable to celebrate and enjoy programs at our hall due to Covid-19. Hence, we had to cancel several programs, although we did broadcast some great online musical shows. As many of you know I am the granddaughter of Aajibai Banarse (known as Londonchya Aajibai and Puran Poli Ajibai), the daughter of Mr & Mrs Atmaram Jirapure and daughter-in-law of Mr & Mrs Nagnath Pitale. I joined the Executive Committee to follow in the footsteps of my grandmother, father, and father-in-law.The Executive Team are all extremely passionate individuals and it is our pleasure to serve our elders and our community. Over the past 16 months we have all worked extremely hard, trying to make a difference by the programs we have presented to you and to continue the excellent work of our predecessors. All the programs we chose to present to you we emphasised on our strong Marathi culture and traditions. While the Mandal is a platform for people to socialise and mingle, it also provides a wonderful window for the younger generation to experience our rich Maharashtrian culture. We want to give them a platform to make new friends, learn about our culture and traditions and what they represent. Many of our traditions have a scientific reason behind them. I have learned a lot during the past year from our community. So, I speak from my own experience, that there is a lot for the younger generation to learn about our Maharashtrian traditions and identity. As soon as it is safe to do so, we will start hosting some exciting events some of which we had previously planned for you. In the meantime, look out on MML’s Facebook, YouTube channel, our website, and emails for details of our online shows. We are all connected to each other in this world. If one of our members suffers, we too feel this pain. Caring is a language everyone understands, so please let us all try to care for one another. We wish you all good health always. Thank you, Mrs Shyamal Pitale, (Jirapure) For any queries please contact: President@mmlondon.co.uk Tejesh Ghag: Vicepresident@mmlondon.co.uk Vinod Devkar: Secretary@mmlondon.co.uk 2

Ganeshotsav – 22nd August to 1st Sept 2020 - look for more details below Diwali – To be confirm Christmas – To be confirmed AGM – to be confirmed Please check for regular updates on MML’s Facebook / YouTube as we may change or introduce other live events. MML’s 30th Ganeshotsav Ganeshotsav is the most prestigious event our Executive Committee organises, but sadly due to the threat of Covid-19 still being amongst us, the Executive Committee, the Board of Trustees and the Ganeshotsav Committee have jointly agreed that the risk of anyone catching the virus is too great, especially since Covid can be invisible and undetected in asymptomatic people, which has been established in a majority of the positive cases. Even taking someone’s temperature before entering the hall does not prove they do not have Covid. Accordingly, this year we will provide ONLY online live darshan for all our devotees. We are welcoming our Bappa in Mandal hall for one and half days and perform all rituals with very limited committee members. All Pooja, Aarti, Atharvashirsh, Visarjan and the entertainment programs will be streamed online live on Facebook and YouTube from 22nd Aug to 1st Sept. The full Ganeshotsav program plan is below. 6
PLEASE DO NOT TURN UP AT THE MML HALL FOR DARSHAN (all gates will be closed), no one other than the people sitting for Pooja, the guruji’s and the agreed EC, BoT, and Ganesh committee members preparing the prasad parcels for sending by post, will be permitted to enter the hall. Please be respectful of our decision, which has not been made lightly. We realise that you may be disappointed by this decision but the Covid crisis is not over yet and we must be mindful of keeping our community safe, especially the seniors. We have already lost too many good people from our community this year. Additionally, we have invited the award-winning Manoj Vasaikar a Michelin star chef, with his restaurant Indian Zing based on Kings Road, Hammersmith, to prepare an exquisite Ganeshotsav prasad for you. We are delighted that Manoj has accepted this invitation. This prasad will be blessed by Bappa and then, we will send it by post, to all members and to anyone that makes a donation to MML until 1st September 2020 (that live in the UK only). Due to postal delays we cannot guarantee the prasad will arrive to an overseas location within the use-by-date. Note: We urge you all to help us to ensure the prasad reaches each member’s accurate postal address. There are several members for whom we do not have current postal addresses and we are also lacking email addresses for many members too. Please can you inform anyone you know, that is a member of MML and has not been receiving emails, and they think their postal addresses may be incorrect as they may have moved since last providing MML with their details. Please email mml_ita@mmukl.com We cannot take responsibility for the prasad not reaching members, it is up to individual members to keep your details accurate with us. Please notify us of your detail changes by 17th of August. Prasad: If you or a member of your family has food allergens, then please be aware that the Ganeshotsav prasad we send to you may contain nuts and other allergens. 7

Support for Students and Families trying to return to India The MML Executive Committee has been supporting Students stranded in the UK, to return to India, Maharashtra State, as well as supporting a few families to return to other states in India. Several students have reached out to MML via Facebook and Emails asking us for advice and support to return to their families in India. Their ages ranged from 21 to 25 years, and although they had tried to contact the High Commission of India's Office (HCI), these students did not receive responses to their communications, at first. At the time, the HCI was inundated with thousands of messages and emails, so it is hardly surprising a few messages were missed. We guided the students through the process and wrote each of their emails for them to submit to the HCI, to their Universities and to Air India (to ensure their communication was always clear, polite and to the point). On the day of their flights, we met the students at Heathrow Airport to give them some necessities required for their journey and for their 14 days of quarantine (washable mask, sanitiser, disposable gloves, antibacterial wipes, snacks, etc. The following day, we contacted each student to ensure they reached their quarantine hotels safely, and some students have kept in touch with us even now, showing gratitude for EC's support. As part of the Vande Bharat Mission phase 3 and 4, We have also helped a few families to return to India since their elderly parents are unwell. The following message is from two of the student EC supported “Hope this email finds you well. I sincerely appreciate the assistance you provided with my travel back to India in this pandemic situation. Your help with all the necessary arrangements like hand sanitizer, gloves, travel ticket printouts and everything else for my travel made my journey smooth. Thank you for your guidance and support. Warm regards, A.nother” _______________________________ “Hello Ma'am, Thank you for helping and guiding me to reach home to my family safely. Without your guidance I would have been still stranded in UK. Also, thank you for providing me with vital equipment for traveling in plane and survive quarantine safely. Being supportive and kept me motivated to not to lose hope. We all are very grateful to you. God bless you and your family. Regards, A.nother and family” 13
MML working to support Indian Students in the UK – in collaboration with SEVA Trust UK MML has been supporting and working with SEVA Trust UK, to get the much-needed food and supplies to Indian students in the UK. Their current hub is based in Bedfordshire (covering Bedford, Luton, and Milton Keynes). SEVA Trust UK is a non- profit making registered charity working in the UK and India to support Education, Health and Environment, especially for underprivileged students. It is run by unpaid volunteers, similarly to MML. MML has made a financial donate of £2,100 (which includes donations made by BoT and EC) to Seva Trust UK. Since we are not resourced to validate each request for food and support, we felt we would work with an organisation that is better equipped to verify and support such needs. The following message was posted by "SEVA Trust UK· June 29 · We are pleased to work with Maharashtra Mandal London to reach out to Maharashtrian and other Indian students in the UK who are facing challenging times during #Covid19. Our sincere thanks to the President and the management committee for helping us to reach more students in need and connecting students with us who need help." Successful Grant Application for our Mandal The message below is on behalf of the Board of Trustees. Amongst all the recent sad news there is some good news that we thought of sharing with you all. This year due to a majority of businesses suffering from lack of income due to the Covid19 Lockdown, our Finance Trustee Anand Gadre applied for a grant for Maharashtra Mandal UK Ltd, under the government scheme for £25,000 which is the maximum we could apply for. This grant was approved and given to us 3 weeks ago by the Brent Council. Our General Rates bill for the year 20/21 of GBP1,382.40 is also reduced to zero. The grant will go some way towards compensating us for the loss of rent for our hall, loss of events income and donations at events. It will also help us to carry out the much needed repairs to the mandal. This is the largest grant ever received by us from the government and local council. . 14
Support for our Members With the Covid-19 challenges we continue to face, we have all been conscious of the well-being of our members, especially our senior members, those that are on their own and those that are unwell and may need some support, which you may not be able to obtain from your family and friends. We just want you to know that we care about you and we are happy to help you if you need us. These are some of the areas we may be able to support you 1. Anxious or worried or just needing to chat with someone 2. If you are living alone and need help getting your groceries 3. Help with prescription collections/deliveries 4. Posting mail Please email us in the first instance at President@mmlondon.co.uk indicating the type of assistance you require, the area you live in, and your mobile number. We will try to find someone local to ring you and try to provide the necessary support. Some things to think about Health & Relaxation – keep your mind stimulated by reading a book, newspaper/magazine, doing some puzzles, playing a game of cards, listening to podcasts, watch a film. Nature & Exercise – on sunny days you may want to do some light gardening if you have one and you are able to. Performing a little exercise is good for your body and good for mental health; this may include Yoga/Pilates by following instructions on YouTube, perhaps. Cleaning - Wash your hands for the recommended 20 seconds each time you come into your home from outside. Food – Eat well and keep hydrated. Think about your diet. Your appetite may change if your routine changes, or if you're less active than usual. Eating regularly and keeping your blood sugar stable can help your mood and energy levels. Drinking sufficient amounts of water is important for your mental and physical health. Please view the special information below on nutrition, immunity and NHS advice. Special Information In the current environment more than ever, it’s important to maximise your immunity and fight off disease. Please go to the following website to view the advice on nutrition and immunity. The Article is written by Dr. Helen Phadnis, a Consultant Dietitian. http://www.nomnomnerd.com/nutrition-health/nutrition-and-immunity/ 15
NHS Advice - Live Well / Eat Well A Mediterranean diet incorporates the traditional healthy living habits of people from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It varies by country and region, but in general, it's high in vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, beans, cereals, grains, fish, and unsaturated fats such as olive oil. It usually includes a low intake of meat and dairy foods. The Mediterranean diet has been linked with good health, including a healthier heart. You can make your diet more Mediterranean-style by: • eating plenty of starchy foods, such as bread and pasta • eating plenty of fruit and vegetables • including fish in your diet (if you are able to) • eating less meat • choosing products made from vegetable and plant oils, such as olive oil For full information on the NHS Live Well/Eat Well please click on the following link https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/ Please note advice given at www.gov.uk/coronavirus and www.nhs.uk/coronavirus Help 4-year-old boy – Veer Gudhka 4 year old Veer has a rare genetic disorder known as Fanconi Anaemia, that mainly affects the bone marrow. It results in decreased production of all types of blood cells. As a result Veer needs a stem cell transplant urgently, and now it is more crucial than ever to find a Stem Cell donor, as Veer’s condition will soon start to deteriorate. Please help to give this little boy a gift of life. To register as a donor, complete this online form at https://www.helpveernow.org/ If you are eligible you will be sent a test kit to your home. All that is needed is a cheek swab, spend a few minutes swabbing the inside of your cheek with the swabs provided, let them dry off, then put them back in the envelope provided and return the kit in the self-addressed envelope. The results of the swab test will be added to the registers and you will be contacted if you are a match for Veer or anyone else. More donors are needed on the DKMS and ANTHONY NOLAN registers. South Asians like Veer only have a 20% chance of finding a match. The more people that can be added to the registers will help to increase the chance of finding a match for this brave little boy.
