ENTRANCE The Welcome The Rev. Harriet J. Bryan The Call to Worship for World Communion Sunday Rev. Bryan Today we celebrate World Communion Sunday. With Christians everywhere, we gather at Christ’s welcome table to share in simple elements of bread and cup. In our unity, Christ is alive. In this sacrament, Christ is made known throughout the earth.
We come to this World Communion table to unite our hearts with brothers and sisters in every nation who seek to know Christ’s presence in the breaking of the bread. Various persons bring the gifts of bread to the table. VOICE 1: I represent North America, and I come bringing corn bread from Mississippi, sour dough rolls from California, tortillas from Mexico, and bagels from New York. VOICE 2: I represent Asia, and I come bringing rice cakes from Japan, wontons from China and na’an from India. VOICE 3: I represent Africa, and I come bringing fufu from the Congo, pounded yam from Nigeria and chin chin from Ghana. VOICE 4: I represent Europe, and I come bringing baguettes from France, sweet rolls from Portugal, focaccia from Italy, and black rye from Russia. VOICE 5: I represent South America, and I come bringing pho de coco from Brazil, empanadas from Colombia, and cassava bread from Venezuela. VOICE 6: I represent Central America, and I come bringing bulla cakes from Jamaica, ozzies from the Dominican Republic, and cheese bread from El Salvador. After the bread is placed, all join together in praying: Praise God for the bread of life, gift of the earth, and bless, O God, all those who dwell upon the earth. Amen. All join in singing the following song, which will be led by members of Jubilation.
The Opening Sentences Rev. Valarie P. James Many grains were gathered together to make this bread. So we who are many, and come from many places, are one in Christ Jesus who has made the sure foundation. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be forever. Amen. +The Processional Hymn WESTMINSTER ABBEY (+ indicates to stand) Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation During the singing of the hymn, children ages 4 & 5 are invited to go to Kids Core where they will learn more about God and worship in an exciting child-oriented way. At the conclusion of worship, parents will go to Room 308 to dismiss their children. Grades 1-5 will remain in worship to celebrate Holy Communion. The Invitation & Prayer of Confession The Rev. Jared D. Wilson This table is for all of us, near and far, high and low, east and west and north and south. This table is for all of us, but it is not our table. It’s not a United Methodist table, and it’s not an American table. It’s God’s table, for all of us, and it’s a table of grace. And no matter how many times we wander from God, or argue, or divide ourselves with anger and bitterness and falsehood, or forget this gift of grace, God continues to prepare a place here for all of us. And as we come together today, let us begin with the truth— confessing our sin to God and to each other, first in these moments of silence. A time of silence is observed, and all are invited to offer their personal confession.
Almighty God, author of mercy and grace: You have called us to one table, but we have pursued our own course. You have promised us the abundance of creation, but in our greed, and in our envy, the world goes without. You have promised us the bread of life itself, but in our pride, and in our arrogance, the world goes hungry. You have promised us the waters of peace and justice, but in our violence, and in our discord, the world goes thirsty. And now we are famished, too. Have mercy on us. Forgive us, again. Transform us, at this table, and for this table, and send us from this table as servants of your righteousness. Amen. The congregation is invited to sing (in either Greek or English): The pastor invites the congregation to stand and offers these words of assurance, as water is poured into the baptismal font: Even when our cups run dry, God’s grace overflows. Even when our plates are empty, God’s generosity overflows. And even when our hearts feel barren, God’s love overflows. Friends, we have been called and claimed by the God of all things, and by the abundance of God’s grace, and by the power of God’s love, our sins have been forgiven. Glory to God. Amen. The Song of Reflection The Madison Street Choir Bambelela - A Traditional South African Song “Bambelela” is a Xhosha word that translates as “hold on,” in the sense of hopeful perseverance. The English translation is used locally, in addition to the original Xhosha. The arrangers of this song, Leonorah Kunene, Mairi Munro, and Sindiswe Mamputo, work with people in Gulguthu (a township of Cape Town, South Africa) living with AIDS. PROCLAMATION AND RESPONSE +The Gospel Lesson Rev. Wilson Luke 10:25-37 This is the Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.
The Sermon Andra Stephens Go and Do Likewise: Live in Love The Prayers of the People Rev. Wilson After each petition, the pastor will conclude: Lord, in your mercy, and all may respond: Hear our prayer. Together, let us pray for: the people of this congregation… those who suffer and those in trouble… the concerns of this local community… the world, its peoples, and its leaders… the church universal—its leaders, its members, and its mission… the communion of saints… The Offering of Our Gifts to God Rev. The Anthem The Madison Street Choir And Can It Be? And can it be that I should gain An interest in the Savior’s blood? Died he for me who caused his pain? For me who him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be that Thou my God shouldst die for me? He left his Father’s throne above, So free, so infinite his grace; Emptied himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race; ’Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me. No condemnation now I dread, Jesus and all in Him is mine! Alive in him, my living head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach the eternal throne, And claim the crown through Christ my own. - arr. by Dan Forrest (b. 1978) THANKSGIVING AND HOLY COMMUNION The Great Thanksgiving Rev. Wilson & Rev. Bryan The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing always and everywhere to give thanks to you almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. You have made from one every nation and people to live on all the fave of the earth. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn.
The pastors continue the Great Thanksgiving; the institution of the Lord’s supper is recalled, concluding: And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. The prayer continues with the invoking of the Holy Spirit. The pastor concludes, saying: Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever. The Sharing of the Bread and Cup Our communion elements are gluten free. Our ushers will direct you to come down the center aisle and return to your seat by the outer aisles. For your convenience, we have placed waste stations at the base of the columns near the outer aisles. Today’s communion offering goes to support the World Communion Scholarship Leadership Development Program from the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church. Music during Holy Communion is provided by Beverly Woodard.
