It is a refuge for many animals and plants including 14 lemur species, exotic birds, chameleons, and insects of all kinds. Located at 1000m the climate of this montane park is pleasantly cool, with an average temperature of 20°C. Andasibe is home to 50 species of reptiles, including the largest chameleon in the world (Parson’s chameleon) and the tiny nose-horned chameleon, as well as the majestic Malagasy tree Boa and a myriad of frogs. The colourful wildlife is topped off with more than 100 bird species and countless insects, among them some large, brightly colored butterflies, as well as the unusual Giraffe weevil, a tiny insect named for its unusually long neck. Travel by 4x4 to the world-famous Avenue of Baobabs. The avenue is a prominent group of 25 towering Baobab trees (Adansonia Grandidier’s Baobabs), standing 30m tall, lining a dirt road. Its striking landscape has made it a national monument and draws visitors from all around the globe. To see the rays of light shine through these majestic ancient trees along the dusty road is simply a feast for the eyes. The Madagascar Baobab is locally known as ‘Renala’, which means ‘Mother of the forest’. Continue your travels to Kirindy. Accommodations at Relais du Kirindy are basic bungalows with ensuite (best available). They have a bar & restaurant terrace with a pool, which is refreshing on a hot afternoon after exploring the park. Head out on a night walk in search of the many night creatures of Kirindy including nocturnal lemurs and the Fossa. Overnight: Relais du Kirindy – Bungalow (B,L,D) Day 08. Oct 26, 2022. Explore Kirindy National Park / Night walk Camp Amoureux Kirindy is a privately managed reserve, protecting Madagascar’s highly threatened dry deciduous forest. Kirindy is particularly famous for 3 things: the Fossa, the giant jumping rat and the lemurs, especially the nocturnal ones. This is one of the few places on Madagascar where you will have a very good chance of seeing the shy Fossa, the island’s top predator, a large cat-like carnivore. Kirindy has the highest concentration of Fossa, most likely because of the high density of nocturnal lemurs, which are their primary food. The tangled woodlands house 6 nocturnal lemur species and include the rare Coquerel’s giant mouse lemur, pygmy mouse-lemur, fork-crowned lemur, grey mouse lemur, western fat-tailed dwarf lemur and the red-tailed sportive lemur, alongside the 2 diurnal species (Brown lemur, Verreaux’s sifaka). The best times for wildlife viewing and cooler temperatures is the early mornings and later afternoons, which is when we’ll head into the forest for our guided nature walks in the private reserve. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool. Tonight, join another nocturnal walk to Camp Amoureux in search of more night creatures. Overnight: Relais du Kirindy – Bungalow (B,L,D) Day 09. Oct 27, 2022. Charter flight to Anjajavy / Mangrove sunset cruise Rise early and travel back to Morondava (with a quick stop at the Baobabs) for your early morning Charter flight to Anjajavy (with a refuelling stop en route). The lost world of Anjajavy is located on WWW.WILDEARTHEXPEDITIONS.COM 7 INFO@WILDEARTHEXPEDITIONS.COM
an enchanting peninsula, a remote and exceptionally beautiful area of coastline, with sandy coves and turquoise waters. The elegant Anjajavy L’Hôtel, is located in a nature reserve and borders a superb dry forest reserve protecting a plethora of unique wildlife, majestic Baobab trees and impressive tsingys. Anjajavy works closely with the local community to preserve the biodiversity of its 450ha protected land area of predominantly dry deciduous forest and a large marine reserve. The lodge is the ideal place to observe lemurs and watch the delightful troops of dancing Coquerel’s Sifaka as they roam freely in the resort garden and surrounding forest. The flora of Madagascar is so rich that the famous Parisian landscape architect Camille Muller was inspired to gather the rarest plant species in the hotel’s landscaped garden. Anjajavy l'Hôtel, a Relais & Chateau property, consists of a beautiful ensemble of rosewood villas scattered over a long sandy beach on the Mozambique Channel. On arrival enjoy a sumptuous lunch and a leisurely afternoon by the pool or head for a walk along the beautiful beach or wander through the lush resort gardens. Later this afternoon, head out on a boat cruise to the nearby mangroves in search of birds and the Madagascar flying fox. Enjoy a cocktail whilst watching the sunset. Return to the resort for a delicious dinner and overnight. Overnight: Anjajavy L’Hôtel – Villa (B,L,D) Day 10-11. Oct 28-29, 2022. Anjajavy / Wildlife walks, caves and Moramba Bay cruise The Anjajavy peninsula is surrounded by unspoilt beaches, jaw-dropping bays, and limestone forests (Tsingy). Explore deserted creeks, mangroves, little fishing villages and the Tsingy, coral remains sculpted by erosion and overlapping baobab roots. Wildlife is prolific and walks through the forest reveal chameleons, frogs, bush-pigs, and lemurs. There are two diurnal lemur species, the common brown lemur and Coquerel’s sifaka, both of which are easily seen, often at the resort grounds. On night walks, nocturnal species include the fat tailed dwarf lemur, sportive lemur and mouse lemur, scops owl, nightjar, and maybe you’ll be lucky to get a glimpse of the elusive Fossa. A stay at Anjajavy is as much about the coast as it is the forest. It is well worth getting up early for a guided bird walk. Recognized as one of the top birding destinations in Madagascar, the Anjajavy Reserve boasts 135 bird species, many highly endangered. For the more adventurous, head to the cave of Ambohimenamaso. Travel by vehicle across dunes, savannas, forests and cross small villages before reaching a pass between rock towers called the door of Ambohimenamaso. Located about 20km south of the Lodge, this cave is more than 1km long. On a recent paleantology expedition, a dwarf hippopotamus jaw and subfossil mammal remains were found in one of the entrance galleries. Please note that inside the cave some crawling and rope-climbing may be necessary. Let yourself be seduced by wonderful Moramba Bay on a boat cruise. Marvel at the jagged limestone mushroom islands, explore gorgeous small coves and beaches, discover marine Baobabs, search for the critically endangered Madagascar Fish eagle and hop in the warm clear waters for some snorkelling. In the afternoons, when the temperature is at its hottest, enjoy a relaxing dip in the refreshing resort pool or take a swim in the ocean at the pristine beach in front of your villa. Overnight: Anjajavy L’Hôtel – Villa (B,L,D) Day 12. Oct 30, 2022. Charter flight to Maroantsetra / Nosy Mangabe / Masoala Rise early for your morning charter flight (with a refuelling stop) to the small town of Maroantsetra on Madagascar’s Northeast coast, where you board the motorboat for an exciting voyage across Antongil Bay, a World Heritage Site and breeding ground for Humpback whales. The remote Masoala Peninsula can only be accessed by charter plane and boat. En route to Masoala Forest lodge, stop at Nosy Mangabe, an island with a rich history of piracy, now a protected wildlife reserve and sanctuary for the endangered Aye-Aye, black and white ruffed lemur, white-fronted brown lemur, and brown mouse lemur. Dense vegetation drops down over large boulders and hidden coves. Continue your travels to your home for the next 4 days. Masoala Forest Lodge, with its 7 elevated WWW.WILDEARTHEXPEDITIONS.COM 8 INFO@WILDEARTHEXPEDITIONS.COM
tree houses, is a barefoot luxury outpost lost in time and nature, a place to explore, relax and connect with the natural world in all its primordial splendour. Nestled in a sheltered cove, surrounded by the park, the lodge opens onto warm, coral-rich waters, where beaches stretch for miles and the sounds of a forest teeming with life will send you into a blissful reverie each night. Overnight: Masoala Forest Lodge - Treehouse (B,L,D) Day 13-15. Oct 31- Nov 02, 2022. Masoala National Park / Walks, Snorkelling, Kayaking The lush primary rainforest of Masoala National Park, Madagascar’s largest park, is known for its incredible array of biodiversity and is dripping with lemurs, chameleons, and a host of other wildlife. Spend 3 full days on spectacular guided forest walks by day and night to see the abundance of wildlife. The warm waters of the Tampolo Marine Reserve, offer lovely snorkelling right off the beach. The sea kayaks are the perfect way to explore the coves and deserted beaches of the sheltered coastline. The tropical waters and surrounding forests teem with weird and wonderful yet harmless creatures. After a hike take a refreshing dip in a forest stream. Spot nocturnal mouse lemurs, leaf- tail geckos, or even Aye-Aye. In the day, you are likely to see the white-fronted Brown lemur, woolly lemur, and many colourful and vocal bird species. This densely forested peninsula contains the largest remaining block of protected rainforest and harbours an important part of the fauna and flora of Madagascar, including a wealth of rare and unique species. Overnight: Masoala Forest Lodge - Treehouse (B,L,D) Day 16. Nov 03, 2022. Charter flight to Tana / Fly home After breakfast, bid farewell to Masoala National Park, and head back to Maroantsetra for your charter flight back to Antananarivo. Those continuing to the Seychelles, fly to La Réunion on Nov 04 in the afternoon. Day 17. Nov 4, 2022. CHARTER FLIGHTS & DOMESTIC FLIGHTS Madagascar is a very large island with enormous distances and a very basic road infrastructure. Despite being very costly, we have decided to run this expedition using charter planes (a Cessna 208B and a Cessna Caravan), for our group exclusively. We feel it’s well worth the expense to save time and avoid lengthy road trips, on roads that in most places are horrid. You will be limited to roughly 100kg weight in total (including persons weight and any baggage, i.e., 80kg person, plus 20kg luggage) which of course will be spread across the total amount of weight allowed on the plane. Remember, Madagascar is a tropical destination, so packing light is key, and laundry is available at all hotels you will be staying at. Any gear can also be left at our hotel in Tana in between trip segments. The per person cost for all the charter flights will very much depend on final guest numbers and the Euro/USD exchange rate (roughly USD$3000 per person as of 11 Apr 2022). For the Pre-Extension, we highly recommend you purchase the scheduled domestic flight from Nosy Be-Tana on 20OCT (and if required the Tana-Nosy Be flight on 16OCT) through Wild Earth Expeditions. We book these through our local agent, who is there to assist us, if there are any unforeseen delays or cancelations. A roundtrip fare from Tana-Nosy be costs USD$490 per person (in Economy class). SINGLE OCCUPANCY We only have limited single spaces available on this expedition, and single occupancy rates apply. If you want to share accommodations, a roommate will be assigned to you, and double occupancy rates apply. If we cannot pair you with a roommate, the single supplement surcharge applies. WHAT TO EXPECT All Wild Earth Expeditions are very active, and participants need to be in good general health. For most activities, a moderate to good level of fitness is required. This expedition is very active and will include snorkelling, hiking nature trails on sometimes rough terrain, climbing in and out of boats, and other physical activities. Accommodations we have chosen are at upmarket beach resorts, comfortable forest lodges, all with hot water and ensuite bathroom facilities. Please note that the bungalows at Kirindy are basic (best available) and the 1 night at Nosy Iranja will be in small huts on the beach with shared bathroom facilities. October is one of the best months to explore Madagascar. Expect a tropical climate and be prepared for the odd rain shower in the jungle. Small privately chartered aircraft are used throughout the main expedition. Your expedition will be led by 1 Wild Earth Expeditions leader, our CEO and Founder Thomas Baechtold and the best, most experienced Malagasy guides.
