PREFACE Sabbaths 2014 IX. 8 O hasten, hasten through the dark under the dim reminding stars to nd again what is small, tender, beloved, the hope and mercy of this world at the mercy of this world in the darkest dark, the longest night. Wendell Berry This school year, for many, has been a labor of love. A grind. A test of perseverance and long su ering. The psychological pressures of the year have shown some cracks in armor and will. And yet, here we are at the nish line of our long day. We have continued to successfully navigate the rules of engagement laid out by safety o cials for the year. We have sung our way through, and I’m grateful for that. Thank you dear students, who have weathered the year and put best foot forward, trying very hard to hold o the pressure to become jaded and downcast. I appreciate your dedication, exibility, and generosity of spirit. It is a rare thing to sing together these days — and I am grateful to do it one more time. I continue to be grateful for my colleague Mr. Ted Brimeyer, our collaborators Susan Ihnen and Ling-Yu Hsiao, as well as my excellent Voice colleagues at Drake University for their tireless work and dedication to serve the students and the University. ______ In the nal piece “Before the Sun Goes Down,” the poet Edith Sanford Tillotson pens: “So if the day has made your soul grow weary, And brought your eyes the shadow of a frown, Go, climb the road that leads you to my highland glen, And watch the clouds light up before the sun goes down. I hope the clouds light up for you all as the spring blooms forth and summer comes. fi fi fl ff fi ffi ff

DRAKE UNIVERSITY LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT https://www.drake.edu/diversity/getinvolved/resources/landacknowledgement/ “Acknowledgment by itself is a small gesture. It becomes meaningful when coupled with authentic relationships and informed action. But this beginning can be an opening to greater public consciousness of Native sovereignty and cultural rights, a step toward equitable relationship and reconciliation.” “Acknowledgment is a simple, powerful way of showing respect and a step toward correcting the stories and practices that erase Indigenous people’s history and culture and toward inviting and honoring the truth.”U.S. fi …
