SoHumane’s youth volunteer and school programs, shelter tours, and camps target elementary through high school students. Many children and teens have the opportunity to learn from SoHumane staff and adult volunteers and interact with the dogs and cats in our care. Some choose SoHumane partners with college level students to do scouting, community service and school on a one to one basis by being a resource for projects that benefit the animals. class and capstone projects and internships. Too Many Kittens – You Can Help Jennifer Wicklund, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Kittens and puppies! to us from the community. These kittens range The things of from days-old babies to kittens old and big children’s dreams! enough for spay and neuter surgeries. Extensive I t’s difficult to care is necessary for days-old kittens, which are acknowledge that immediately sent to foster care as bottle babies. a society could ever Once kittens reach eight weeks of age and a have too many soft, minimum of two pounds, they are ready to be fluffy, adorable kittens placed up for adoption and can undergo their or puppies. But most of spay or neuter surgery. the world has just that - an overpopulation of Jennifer Wicklund, DVM dogs and cats. In 2017, the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) released national shelter estimates showing that despite improvements in euthanasia numbers, 1.5 million cats and dogs are still euthanized in shelters every year. Our community cannot claim to be exempt from pet overpopulation, especially with regard to cats. We may feel we live in a responsible society where we and most of those we know believe in spay and neuter programs. But with the arrival of spring comes kitten season in Southern Oregon, In addition to taking care of hundreds of kittens that will turn into pets each year, in 2018 and proof will be right in front of our eyes that cat population control is a major issue for this region.SoHumane, in partnership with SNYP (Spay/ Neuter Your Pet), piloted a trap/neuter/release Let’s look at some quick facts of cat program for feral cats. Feral or community cats reproduction. Did you know that a female cat are unowned cats that live outdoors and are can: not socialized or friendly to humans. These cats • Become pregnant as young as 4 months of age live in colonies and generally survive outdoors • Go into heat every month from spring through on their own but are often assisted by generous fall humans who visit the colony daily to provide food. • Become pregnant even before completing Southern Oregon is home to dozens and dozens weaning of her most recent litter of feral cat colonies. SoHumane continues work on feral cat trap/neuter/release programs to Although estimates of cat reproduction abilities address cat overpopulation issues. are controversial and often overestimated, a relatively realistic and conservative computation What can YOU do to help cats and kittens based on reproduction and survival statistics in YOUR community? illustrates that a single cat may produce as many • Ensure that every cat you make a part of your as 49,000 surviving offspring in 10 years! If you have feral cats that kitten fosters spend a good portion of the spring, roam your property, look into trap/neuter/ summer and fall caring for kittens surrendered release programs. 6 SoHumane Spring 2019
—Continued from page 6 • Do not think that letting your cat have just one litter is a good idea. Even though you may find homes for those six kittens to which your cat gives birth, it still takes those homes away from six other homeless cats. • Don’t buy kittens or cats from breeders – adopt, don’t shop! • Donate to local rescue organizations. • Volunteer as a kitten foster. SoHumane is always in need of families willing to care for kittens until they are old enough to be in the adoption program. If everyone takes steps to overcome cat overpopulation issues in our community, perhaps the euthanasia of unwanted or homeless cats in shelters across the nation will become a thing of the past. “Love this event (Share the Love)! Got our baby there last year, best decision ever! He has brought so much joy and love to us and our older pup that was missing his friend we had to put down a couple years ago! Strax (formerly Yoda) is such an amazing pup!” – Heather “A year ago we adopted Faith (lovingly named by the rescue crew), she is a Saving Train girl. She is 10+ years old, and we were told soon after we brought her home that she was likely to only make it a few weeks. Here she is tonight, defying all odds, ready for her 2nd Christmas with us. We kept the name, Faith, it is definitely fitting. In addition to ‘adopt don’t shop,’ I hope everyone considers senior dogs, they are really a special kind of love that is indescribable.” – Staci SoHumane Spring 2019 7

Non-Profit U.S. Postage Paid 2910 Table Rock Road, Medford, OR 97501 Permit No. 268 www SoHumane.org Medford, OR Senior Pets Are the Best! O ften older dogs and cats are overlooked. But sometimes people come to SoHumane specifically to adopt a senior pet. These special people have the ability to see past the grey and age, look directly at the animal and find true love. The benefits of owning a senior pet greatly outweigh the risks. You don’t have to worry about how big they will get, what their personality will be, or how much energy they will have. What you see is what you get—and so much more! A senior pet is mature and often well trained. They enjoy easy living and are happy to relax by your side. And the greatest joy is that you have the opportunity to give them a second chance and make their golden years the very best. “Another SENIOR PET success story! Nelson has quickly settled in with my other dog and my cat. He is so well behaved and sweet. He LOVES to go on outdoor adventures and is learning the ‘ropes’ of hiking. I can’t say enough about SENIOR PETS, they are so special and I just LOVE them and I just wish I could adopt more! Thanks again everyone who had a hand in making his life comfortable while waiting for his forever home.” – Pam Mission Statement To improve the lives of pets and people through sustainable programs of education, adoptions, and spay/neutering. 16 SoHumane Spring 2019
