Season Artists on Creation & Change in 2020/21 When Heather and I were talking about bringing back craigslist cantata, initially it was pre-pandemic, and at that point we thought, ‘Oh, this show is still relevant to our lives,’ and then the lock-downs were in place and it became even more relevant. Thank you to The Cultch for being able to pivot and program a diverse selection of live-streamed shows this year. It was a privilege to perform in not one, but three (plus a remount!!!) shows in both the York and The Cultch’s Historic building. From solo rehearsals in basement dressing rooms, to distanced and masked group dance numbers, to performing in a closet, there was never a dull moment, especially when working with quirky crews made up of friends old and new. Strict COVID protocols always made me feel safe and reassured, and in addition, there was plenty of space to play and for silly antics to ensue. I love The Cultch and hope we can mingle in the tiny York lobby soon! Pandemic Artist‑in‑Residence: Veda Hille As our venues were closed to the public, the Historic Theatre (and its grand piano) also became a private studio for Veda Hille to work in safety and solace throughout the season— offering important creative grounding during a time of great upheaval. Becoming The Cultch Pandemic Artist-In- Residence really turned my year around; having access to that beautiful piano and the stillness and weight of the theatre meant I could turn to music and writing at a time where I might’ve otherwise just been treading water. That led to deeper practice, new songs, reflections on my relationship to audience, and of course a series of surprising performances! I thought often about how I’ve run my life, as we all did this year. I am so grateful for the relationships I have in East Vancouver; they held me up in these strange hard times. Thanks to The Cultch I felt able to contribute to the world in my own small way, and to continue following Image of Veda Hille in Little Volcano by Matt Reznek music around wherever it leads.” VEDA HILLE 20/21 IMPACT REPORT 23
