Looking forward to the 2021 Season! For well over 100 years, Hayo-Went-Ha Camps have provided a place for campers and staff to congregate in the spirit of friendship and family. Since their inception, Hayo-Went-Ha Camps have never missed a summer... until 2020. We challenge campers to look inside themselves and discover strength they didn’t know they had. We teach the campers to have fortitude when faced with challenging situations, and we will act in kind. It is time to start a new streak of unbroken summers, and we are already looking forward to 2021. Rest assured that our camps will be here for years to come. There is no doubt that campers and staff will gather on the shores of Torch and Arbutus to share challenges, friendship, laughter, and songs. Director's Corner - Torch Lake Site The kids are heading back to a new reality this fall. In addition to all the challenges of being a young person, they are navigating remote learning, in-person fishbowls in the classroom, and missed opportunities to interact with others their age. At Hayo-Went-Ha, we are dealing with new realities too. The trails have gone quiet—no noises of fall school groups. The only remaining sounds are wind whistling through the golds and reds of the quickly darkening leaves. Hayo-Went-Ha teaches resilience, though. The camp and the campers are tempered and made more robust from the challenges they face and overcome. The bizarre new normal of our day-to-day over the next eight months will only make the reunion next summer that much sweeter. I can't wait to see all of your smiling faces next summer. Director's Corner - Arbutus Lake Site The summer of 2020 will always be remembered as the year of no programming. Camp this year has been very quiet and very strange indeed. No Big Blue Bus coming down the driveway with cabins of happy and dirty, hardcore girls back from their trips, no skit nights, no canoeing and no excited campers running around our Piney Wood Hills. I do hope that despite the canceled camp season that you all still found some positives. I hope you all connected with your camp friends either in person or virtually and reminisced about summers past and the coming 2021 summer when you will all be back. I hope you all found peace in spending the summer differently than you planned. Maybe more time with your family and local friends or trying new things. I know camp missed you all! We are all hoping that 2021 will see us back better and safer than ever. Keep in touch.
New bathroom at Arbutus! Thank you to all the donors who were excited about donating to a bathroom. We all know a bathroom is not exactly the most exciting project to donate to, but I can assure you that every single camper and staff assigned to Happy Hollow in the future will be VERY appreciative! It will be a “game changer,” which is a direct quote from several past staff members who toured the new building this summer. Thank you to Chris Richter and RCI for your construction expertise and for coming in just under budget. Our next project: a bathroom in the Nejee area! (This will be just as exciting!) Virtual Campfire The 2019 AD staff from both camps are planning a Virtual Campfire. Please join us on October 10th at 7:00 PM. We will have all of your favorite camp songs and some special guests! Join Zoom Meeting at: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88694834164 Camp Merchandise HWH or AHWH The camp store is open! If you would like a traditional camp hoody or a specially designed 2020 non trip trip shirt just call the office or email us with your size and color, and we will get that to you in time for the cooler Fall weather.
Staying Connected with our Campers Even though we all missed the summer at camp this year the Arbutus Lake LC’s group of 2020 decided to still do a project. This year as a group they wrote to every first-year camper introducing themselves and the camp program! Instead of being at camp and receiving their first-year moon, our first year campers received a handwritten letter from a veteran camper. As sad as it is missing out on your first year at AHWH at least our first-year campers all received a little taste of what camp is all about. Thank you to our LC group who put their letter writing skills and envelope making skills to the test. I hope to see you all complete staff applications for the 2021 summer. Gina G Despite the unusual summer, we have been able to secure Gina’s trainee plan through it all. Gina has enjoyed a full 18 months at AHWH spending time learning all aspects of the organization. She has learned how to book permits, register campers, record alumni events and donations as well as learning a great deal about maintenance. She has certainly spent some time fixing a roof or two this summer too! As her 18 months draws to a close please join me wishing her well and that we hope we see her back in some capacity even just for a visit in 2021! We miss you already. https://MissYouAlreadyG
