A TEACHER’S GUIDE Looking ahead at the 2018 VCE Health and Human Development Study Design Starting in January 2018, VCE teachers will start implementing a new Study Design for Health and Human Development. To align with this change, Jacaranda will be publishing a fifth edition of the popular Key Concepts in VCE Health & Human Development series, Book 1 (Units 1 & 2) and Book 2 (Units 3 & 4). While the Study Design is still in progress, authors Andrew Beaumont and Meredith Fettling, as well as the Jacaranda Publishing team, managed to get a draft copy hot off the press. Keep reading to learn more about the proposed changes, and catch a first glimpse at the updated Key Concepts in VCE Health & Human Development series. What can teachers expect in the new VCE Health and Human Development Study Design? While the 2018 Study Design isn’t expected to be finalised until Term 1 of 2017, here is what we know based on the current draft. First, there are two general changes that apply across all four units: • ‘Health and wellbeing’ replaces ‘health’ as a concept: The new Study Design now makes reference to ‘health and wellbeing’, which is more encompassing than ‘health’ and includes the five dimensions. It also incorporates how an individual feels about their life and the quality of it. • Less focus on biological determinants of health, and more focus on sociolcultural factors: The framework for the organisation of determinants has changed in that the key sociocultural factors now make up the majority of this concept. The Study Design explores the relationship between sociocultural factors, and the behaviours and health status outcomes that they influence. Now, let’s take a closer look at each book in greater detail. © John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd 2016. Jacaranda is just a trading name.

Our approach to the Study Design changes While it’s still early days, Jacaranda is already hard at work on the new series so we can share a few insights about what’s coming. As always, the priority is to ensure complete coverage of the new Study Design in a way that is accessible for all students. The majority of the changes in the new VCE Health and Human Development Study Design are straightforward and will be addressed in the new editions by adding in new content as required, and refreshing existing content. To ensure a fresh take on the new Study Design, our authors will be updating both the copy (incorporating the latest research data, health guidelines and practices) and imagery.
