A MESSAGE FROM SUSIE Dear Lanakila Senior Center Ohana: April is a time to honor our volunteers for their tireless efforts and selfless gift of time and talent that they share with others. Over the past year, hundreds of people have helped Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center. We normally have a volunteer appreciation lunch and program on the third Wednesday in April for our volunteers. This year, we honor and thank them in the next few pages of our newsletter. We truly could not have brought so many online, drive-through, and in-person activities to our center members without your help! This past month has been no exception, holding many classes, presentations, and service projects. Mahalo to Karen Matsunaga, JoAnn Okawa, and Gail Sakihara for helping to coordinate a service project to donate face masks to new student teachers graduating from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Best wishes to our new teachers in their careers as educators. Our heartfelt thanks to Reverend Tad Iwata, LMPSC Member Lynda Asato, and members of Tenrikyo Honolulu Ko for providing hot lunches on April 8, 2021 to express appreciation to class instructors, Program Committee, reception/front desk/kitchen/garden/tech volunteers, and Participant Advisory Board members for their service to Lanakila Senior Center. Their generosity and thoughtfulness is truly appreciated. We have been very fortunate to have the assistance of members of the Queen’s Medical Center’s Cancer Survivors Group, Tenrikyo Honolulu Ko, and LMPSC members Aileen Unten, Ann Maeda, Darlene Larimore, Darlene Sardinha and friend, Janet Miyashiro, Judy Greenwell, June Ching, Karen Matsunaga, Linda Ogata, Lynda Asato, Renee Ooka, Reverend Tad Iwata and Suzanne Simmons, who made beautiful cards for our senior center. These cards are now available for $2.00 each. This is a service project of LMPSC and we hope you will purchase and send these homemade cards to a friend, family member, neighbor, business, non-profit organization, government office, and others in the community to let them know how special they are to you or to thank them for their important work in the community. “Bringing Joy” is a community service project of Lanakila Senior Center and the hope is to inspire people to spread a bit of “ALOHA” to someone special and bring them joy by this random act of kindness. The cards can be picked up in the month of April by calling our office at 847- 1322 and arranging with our staff a day and time for you to pick up the cards. Much thanks to Hawaii Tax Help and Financial Empowerment Solutions, under the leadership of Susan Tamanaha and volunteers Leeward Kalani, Leslie Tanoue, Rita Pregana, Gail Oshita, Romine Crawford, Revelyn Taylan and Pauline You, they were able to help over 100 people prepare tax returns for free in the months of February and March 2021. Mahalo a nui loa to Mary Sueda and Jean Sugihara for freshening up the concession and thrift shop; Arlene Nagamine, Lenora Springer, and Teri June Amuro for continuing to help beautify our gardens; Jane Higa, Flora Nakasone, Janet Ito, Jane Yamada and Clifford Gakiya for cleaning the Craft Room; and Marty Kaili for making our center yard and building so clean and beautiful to support our custodian. All of these efforts are in preparation for a modified reopening of Lanakila Senior Center in the next few months. The date for reopening has not been decided yet. I will send out a robocall to everyone when we receive the reopening date from Catholic Charities Hawaii. A big mahalo to Kapiolani Community College’s Community Health Workers Program’s practicum students Stephanie Cachola and Cristina Cordeiro for their tremendous help in calling all of our senior center members to make sure everyone who wanted to be vaccinated was able to get assistance. Our heartfelt thanks to May Rose Lazarte, a doctoral student with the University of St. Augustine, for supporting the senior center over the past 4 months by surveying members who were active with the center during the pandemic to see how they were doing and how the senior center could help support their members enjoy a good quality of life through its programs. Community Thanks to LMPSC From Kuakini Medical Center: I sincerely apologize for the tardiness of my message, I somehow thought we had already sent a message of thanks to the LMPSC ladies who sewed wheelchair and walker bags for our Kuakini Home residents. I have Rosie Ramiro’s email address, so I sent her an email to thank her for her continued dedication to sewing items for Kuakini’s Health Care Team and the long term care residents. Thanks, Iris, for delivering the bags to Kuakini. We are extremely grateful to your sewing ladies who recently donated a large selection of handmade cloth bags which our residents are using for their wheelchairs, walkers, and bed rails. · Linda Yara – 34 bedrail bags · Judy Greenwell – 8 wheelchair/walker bags, 6 bedrail bags · Mary Sueda – 19 wheelchair/walker bags · Rosie Ramiro – 31 wheelchair/walker bags, 84 scrub caps · Amy Bratt– 17 wheelchair/walker bags, 12 scrub caps There was a very nice variety of cloth and prints that were used to sew the bags. Some of the prints were so beautiful and cute that my staff and I wished that WE needed the bags! J These items were expertly sewn and so professional looking. The residents are very excited about the bags. Please let the sewists know that the Kuakini Home residents are very happy with their new treasures. Also, the scrub caps that Rosie has been sewing for the staff are greatly appreciated and useful. Staff enjoy deciding which days to wear their matching caps. We are so blessed and thankful for the generous community support that we have received throughout the pandemic from organizations and individuals such as the Lanakila Multi Purpose Senior Center members. We know a lot of time, dedication and effort have been put into their various sewing projects. I have attached some photos of the items we have received – you may share it with your members as you see fit. Thanks again for your donations! Please continue to stay well and be safe! From UH Manoa College of Education: Thank you very much on behalf of the UH-Manoa COE teacher candidates for the very generous donation of face masks by the seniors at the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center. The enclosed note with each mask was especially heartwarming and supportive. By gifting these teachers-to-be with bags containing teaching supplies, food items, and personal protective equipment, we hope to provide support during these dire economic times, acknowledge their commitment to the teaching profession, and promote educational excellence, one of the tenets of our international honorary women’s organization Alpha Delta Kappa, along with Altruism and World Understanding. In our successful campaign, we received over $4,500 in monetary donations as well as an abundance of donated goods from more than a hundred individual and group donors throughout our Hawai‘i Alpha Delta Kappa chapters. In addition, the Pearl Harbor Rotary Club endorsed the project and made a generous monetary donation as well. Because of the generosity of all our donors, Project Kako‘o can continue with Phase II in April to support more teacher candidates. We also now envision reaching out to others interested in supporting our future teachers in the UH-Manoa College of Education.
