John Henry Hopkins Jr (1803–1856) ARR. HUGH RONZANI Alleluja Alleluia. THREE KINGS OF ORIENT Nowadays better known as We Three Kings of Orient Are, this popular Christmas carol was written by the American composer John Henry Hopkins Jr and first published in 1863. The eldest son of pioneer parents, Hopkins was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and wrote the music as part of a Christmas pageant for his young nieces and nephews not long before becoming a bishop. Here, Hugh Ronzani has reframed Three Kings of Orient in an arrangement within an arrangement. Hopkins’ original setting, intended for male singers representing the three kings bearing gifts for baby Jesus (Gaspard, Melchior and Balthazar), has been adapted for Baroque stringed instruments and continuo through the lens of one of the most famous ‘Folia’ settings of all – that of Antonio Vivaldi. 30 AUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA NOËL! PROGRAM NOTES Noël! Noël! 16. Traditional O COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL Since its first performance in the original Latin as Adeste Fideles in 1999, O Come, All Ye Faithful has been a regular part of the Brandenburg festive tradition. The hymn has been attributed to various composers, and while the earliest surviving manuscript of the work bears the name of King John IV of Portugal (1604 – 1656), it is likely the tune is even older. The text has been translated countless times, the version you will hear is the most famous English translation by the English priest Frederick Oakeley in 1852. O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, o come ye to Bethlehem! Come and behold him, born the King of Angels! O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord! God of God, Light of Light, Lo! He abhors not the Virgin’s womb: very God, begotten, not created. Sing, choirs of angels! Sing in exultation! Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above: “Glory to God in the highest.” Program notes: Joanna Butler, Paul Dyer, Dr Alan Maddox, Lynne Murray, Alex Palmer & Hugh Ronzani CHLOE LANKSHEAR, SOPRANO 34 AUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA PHOTO BY KEITH SAUNDERS
