DON Organizations

The Department of the Navy employs over 180,000 in its civilian workforce worldwide. Our
civilian employees work side-by-side with the world’s best Navy and Marine Corps military
service members in our Nation’s defense.

Below are our Major Claimant (Command) organizations, their express mission and web site,
if available:

                          NAVY SECRETARIAT AND STAFF (NV12) http://www.navy.mil

                        The Navy Secretariat provides the overall direction to the
                        Department of the Navy. The Secretariat includes the offices of the
                        Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Financial Management and
                        Comptroller; Installations & Environment; Manpower & Reserve
                        Affairs; Research, Development, & Acquisition; and the
                            Office of the General Counsel. Other Secretariat staff offices
                              include the Naval Audit Service, Naval Criminal Investigative
                       Service, and JAG.

                           CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS (NV11) no

The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) is the senior military officer in
                         the Navy. The CNO is a four-star admiral and is responsible to the
                           Secretary of the Navy for the command, employment of resources
                           and operating efficiency of the operating forces of the Navy and of
                           Navy shore activities assigned by the Secretary.

                            A member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the CNO is the principal
                            naval advisor to the President and to the Secretary of the Navy
                                                                 on the conduct of war and
naval activities within the DON.
                          Assistants are the Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO), the
                          Deputy Chiefs of Naval Operations (DCNOs) and a number of other
                          ranking officers. These officers and their staffs are collectively known
                          as the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OpNav).

                         Marines are warriors. Comprised of smart, highly adaptable men and
                         women, the Marine Corps serves as the aggressive tip of the U.S.
                         military spear. They are a smaller, faster, more dynamic force than
                         any other in the American arsenal, and the only forward-deployed
                         force designed for expeditionary operations by

                         air, land, or sea. Working to overcome disadvantage and turn conflict
                         into victory, they accomplish great things, and they do so together.

                            OFFICE OF NAVAL RESEARCH (NV14)

                         ONR sponsors science and technology in support of the U.S. Navy
                         and Marine Corps. ONR funds work at more than 450 universities,
                         laboratories, and other organizations that has resulted in 50 Nobel
                         prizes. From oceanography, advanced materials, sensors, and
                         robotics to biomedical science and technology; from electronics,
                         surveillance, and neurotechnology
                             to manufacturing technology and information science; from
                             advanced combat systems to other technologies for ships,
                             submarines, aircraft, and ground vehicles; from developments in
                             the Global Positioning System to laser dynamics, ONR has
                             sponsored thousands of discoveries and products used every
                             day around the world.

                            OFFICE OF NAVAL INTELLIGENCE (NV15)

ONI supports joint operational commanders with a worldwide,
integrated workforce of active duty, reserve, officer and enlisted and
civilian professionals. At the National Maritime Intelligence Center
(NMIC), ONI brings military and civilian employees into a single
command to provide "one-stop shopping" for national level maritime
intelligence. The NMIC also hosts the Marine Corps
Intelligence Activity (MCIA), the Coast Guard Intelligence
   Coordination Center (ICC), and the Naval Information Warfare
   Activity (NIWA).

   BUREAU OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY (NV18)

The Naval Medical Command provides high quality, economical
health care to approximately 700,000 active duty Navy and Marine
Corps members, as well as 2.6 million retired and family members at
a little more than half the national per capita average cost. This care
is provided while supporting contingency, humanitarian and joint
operations around the world with highly
   trained, dedicated health care professionals adhering to the
   principles of Total Quality Leadership.

   NAVAL AIR SYSTEMS COMMAND (NV19)

    The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) provides advanced
warfare technology to the American war fighter through mastery of
six broad categories of Naval Aviation technologies: Sensors,
Aircraft, Weapons, Training, Launch & Recovery, and
Communications. The organization employs about 25,000 people
  working at eight principal continental United States sites and two
  principal sites overseas, each providing an indispensable piece of
  the advanced warfare equation. NAVAIR is headquartered at
        Patuxent River, Maryland.

   NAVAIR integrates the unique engineering, development, testing
   and management capabilities at each of the sites to deliver
   airborne weapons systems that are technologically superior and
   readily available. NAVAIR's full-sprectrum approach positions the
   command to deliver naval aviation solutions at optimal costs and
   provide support for vital programs.

   BUREAU OF NAVAL PERSONNEL (NV22)

The mission of BUPERS is to support the needs of the Navy by
  providing the Fleet with the right person in the right place at the
  right time. The organization strives to satisfy our Sailors' quality of
  service by providing them with meaningful and rewarding
    career opportunities, promoting and retaining the best, and
    ensuring fair and equitable treatment of all hands at all times.
    BUPERS’ dual focus of concentrating on the Fleet's needs while
    advocating for Sailors is reflected in our mission statement,
    "Mission First ... Sailors Always."

   NAVAL SUPPLY SYSTEMS COMMAND (NV23)

  NAVSUP provides U.S. naval forces with quality supplies and
  services. Employing a worldwide work force of more than 24,000
  military and civilian personnel, NAVSUP oversees logistics
  programs in the areas of supply operations, conventional
  ordnance, contracting, resale, fuel, transportation, and security
   assistance. In addition, NAVSUP is responsible for quality-of-life
   issues for our naval forces, including food service, postal
   services, Navy Exchanges, and movement of household goods.

   NAVAL SEA SYSTEMS COMMAND (NV24)

NAVSEA engineers, builds and supports America's Fleet of ships
and combat systems. NAVSEA's world-class team of
   professionals provides virtual support anywhere and anytime to
   ensure the Fleet remains ready and capable, operating around
   the globe.

   NAVAL FACILITIES ENGINEERING COMMAND (NV25)

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) manages the
planning, design, construction, and provides public works support for
U.S. Naval shore installations around the world. NAVFAC provides
Navy and Marine Corps forces with the operating, support and
training bases they need when they are home ... from the sea. As an
integral member of the Navy and
    Marine Corps team, NAVFAC offers and delivers timely and
    effective facilities engineering solutions worldwide.

    STRATEGIC SYSTEMS PROGRAMS OFFICE (NV30)

The Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) team is dedicated to serving
                      our Nation by providing credible and affordable seabased deterrent
                      missile systems. Assigned the highest national priority, SSP has life
                      cycle responsibility of the TRIDENT I (C4) and TRIDENT II (D5)
                        Strategic Weapons Systems (SWS). SSP directs the research,
                        development, production, logistic support, sustaining engineering
                        effort, test and evaluation of the TRIDENT SWS. This includes
                        direction of research, development, manufacture, test evaluation
                        and operational support of the
                            TRIDENT missiles, planning and directing the development of
                               training systems and equipment, and technical training of
                      personnel; and installation of necessary support facilities. SSP is
                      also the Executive Agent for the US/UK POLARIS Sales Agreement,
                      SSGN Attack Weapons System Integrator, and the Navy’s Executive
                      Agent for arms control treaty implementation and compliance.

                         MILITARY SEALIFT COMMAND (NV33)

                  The Military Sealift Command is the transportation provider for the
                  Department of Defense, with the responsibility of providing strategic
                  sealift and ocean transportation for all military forces overseas. MSC
                  is a U.S. Navy command and is one of three component commands
                  reporting to the joint service U.S.
                                                           Transportation Command,
known as USTRANSCOM.

                         SPACE AND NAVAL WARFARE SYSTEMS COMMAND

                        SPAWAR's mission is to provide the warfighter with knowledge
                        superiority by delivering systems of command, control,
                        communications, computer, intelligence and surveillance. By
                        providing effective information technology and space systems,
                         SPAWAR helps the Navy and Defense Department communicate
                         and share critical information.

                       NAVY SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT ACTIVITY (NV41) no

COMMANDER, U.S. FLEET FORCES (NV60)

          The U.S. Fleet Forces Command provides fully trained, combat
          ready forces to support United States and NATO commanders in
          regions of conflict throughout the world. On the home front, the U.S.
            Fleet Forces Command deters, detects, and defends against
            homeland maritime threats and enemies. U.S. Fleet Forces
            Command oversees more than 111,000 Officer and Enlisted
            personnel, and 18,500 civilian employees stationed worldwide.
            This Echelon II command also establishes, coordinates, and
            implements Navy-wide policies for manning, equipping and
            training Atlantic and Pacific Fleet units preparing for deployment.
            The objective of the U.S. Fleet Forces Command is to ensure a
            unified Navy that, although deploying from different coasts,
            completes common training, executes similar tactics, techniques,
          and procedures, and operates seamlessly around the world. The
          Fleet’s current and future major occupations include information
          technology and telecommunication positions, engineers and
          engineering technicians, physical scientists and oceanographers,
          and many other challenging fields.

             U.S. NAVAL FORCES, EUROPE (NV61) no

          It is the responsibility of the Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Europe
          to fulfill requirements of the Commander, U.S. European
          Command and support the Navy's mission as defined by the Chief
          of Naval Operations by: shaping the environment through forward
          engagement; responding early to the full spectrum of crises and
          transitioning instantaneously from peace to war; preparing now for
          an uncertain future by operating, training,
             maintaining and sustaining combat-ready Naval forces and a
             streamlined support infrastructure; and protecting and caring for
             our people and their families.

           NAVAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING COMMAND (NV62)

           The Naval Education and Training Command is responsible for the
           education and training of Navy and Marine Corps personnel, both
           officers and enlisted. It oversees a network of training and education
           programs and activities that encompass both shore
                                         facilities from coast to coast and ships
at sea.
NAVAL SECURITY GROUP COMMAND (NV69)

           The Naval Security Group Command performs cryptologic and
           related functions, approves requirements for the use of existing
           capabilities and resources, coordinates the execution of approved
           programs, and is responsible for service-wide primary
                                          support of the shore activities of
Command.

              COMMANDER, U.S. PACIFIC FLEET (NV70)

           The mission of the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, is to support the
           U.S. Pacific Command's theater strategy, and to provide
           interoperable, trained, and combat-ready naval forces to the Fleet
           and other U.S.-unified commanders. PACFLT's role has transitioned
           from that of warfighter to that of force-provider, sustainer and trainer
           for the unified commanders. The net effect
               of this change is that the operational chains of command are now
               shorter and more direct, while PACFLT and other force providers
               are able to focus on maintaining readiness.

              NAVAL RESERVE FORCE (NV72)

             The U.S. Naval Reserve Force provides mission-capable units and
             individuals to the Navy and Marine Corps Team throughout
               the full range of operations from peace to war. Commands the
               Naval Reserve Force claimant include both aviation and surface
               forces with locations throughout the country.

              NAVAL SPECIAL WARFARE COMMAND (NV74)

             The mission of the Naval Special Warfare Command is to prepare
             forces to carry out assigned missions and to develop special
             operations strategy, doctrine, and tactics. The Command
               operationally controls and is responsible for the administration,
               training, maintenance, support and readiness of all active-duty
               and reserve NSW personnel.
