Dear Parents/Guardians,
Shortly after my last update, (January 12) we learned of new CDPH approved changes regarding student
COVID contact tracing and quarantines. This change in practice is referred to as the Group-Tracing Approach.
The following changes will be implemented this week in our schools:
• Students will no longer be considered as "close contacts." (Within 6 feet…) A student exposed in an indoor
classroom or extracurricular activity with masks being worn will be considered a "group contact."
o As a “group contact,” students (without COVID related symptoms) will be allowed to attend
school and take part in extracurricular activities
We will no longer place students on a modified quarantine
o An unvaccinated “group contact” should be tested 3-5 days after exposure.
To schedule a COVID test, please review the COVID Testing Sites Reference Guide
(attached)
School site testing will be available as supplies last.
Additionally you may register for a take-home kit to be mailed to you here.
o Due to the recent and current surge of community contracted COVID cases and to reduce the
number of duplicated e-mails, through the month of January, you should assume your student was
a “group contact” and should consider scheduling a COVID test.
• What has not changed as of the date of this notice:
o Students with COVID related symptoms; who are a close contact and/or are positive for COVID
will need to adhere to the LUHSD Isolation and & Quarantine Guidance (attached)
o Indoor Student Athlete COVID testing
o Guidance for large events
o Requirements for wearing masks indoors
o COVID related protocols for district employees
As has been the case since the spring of 2020, everything described above is subject to change.
The guidelines, although a surprise to many of us, are a step in the right direction. CDPH has made movement to
keep as many healthy people in school and in their activities as possible. Those that have symptoms or that have
tested positive shall stay home until a negative test is produced. In the event that more take home kits become
available we will notify you of when and where you can pick up the kits. Due to your participation in the test
pick up prior to school resuming, many students stayed home that first week of school and most likely kept others
healthy.

Isolation & Quarantine Guidance for Students

Test Positive for COVID-19 Actions
(Isolation Required)
Any positive test, regardless of the • Isolate (stay home) for at least 5 days
type of test or vaccination status of • Test on or after Day 5

and in the community)

• If unable to test or choose not to test, isolation is required
for 10 days
• If positive test on or after Day 5, stay isolated until a
negative test is obtained or 10 days of isolation have
passed
• If test negative and fever still present, continue to isolate
until no fever for at least 24 hours without medication
• If test negative and other symptoms are not improving,
continue to isolate until symptoms are resolving
• Test results should be provided to the attendance office
to return to school
