Overview of the Coursework Leaving Certificate Religious Education as a subject allows for the development of the skills of research, analysis, evaluation, critical thinking, communication and reflection. Students at this level should be afforded an opportunity to engage in extended reflection, research and analysis. Coursework gives students the opportunity to develop these skills further through a detailed investigation of a chosen topic that is of personal interest. The Aims of Religious Education for Leaving Certificate To identify how understandings of God, religious traditions, and in particular the Christian tradition, have contributed to the culture in which we live, and how they continue to have an impact on personal lifestyle, interpersonal relationships, and relationships between individuals and their communities and contexts (LC RE Syllabus, p. 5)
Overview of the Coursework Two sections of the syllabus are Section E: Religion and gender designated for coursework each Section F: Issues of justice and peace year. Section G: Worship, prayer and ritual These are prescribed by the SEC. Section H: The Bible: literature and sacred text The coursework titles are from Section I: Religion: the Irish experience the two sections of the course Section J: Religion and science that will not appear in the written examination.

Format of Coursework Changes to the format of the coursework booklet: S59/20 To: Management Authorities of Second Level School Leaving Certificate Religious Education, 2022 Prescribed Titles for Practical Coursework
Format of Coursework “The coursework must be submitted in a standard form in a booklet, which will be issued in due course for that purpose. The Religious Education Coursework Booklets will be marked online from 2021 onwards. When the candidate’s Coursework Booklet is returned to the SEC, it will be scanned and become an electronic script. The scanned images of a candidate’s Religious Education Coursework Booklet will then be marked on screen by examiners using specially designed software”. (Circular S59/20)
Format of Coursework “Candidates should write within the spaces provided in their Religious Education Coursework Booklet, using black or blue pen only, as this will ensure that all of their Coursework Booklet is captured in the scanning process. Anything written outside of these areas or in the margins of the Coursework Booklet may not be seen by examiners”. (Circular S59/20)
Assessment The coursework is assessed externally (SEC) The titles prescribed are common for both Higher Level and Ordinary Level Candidates select one title and submit the coursework on one title only

Teachers’ Role in RE Coursework Research the prescribed coursework titles for 2022 from: Section E - Religion and Gender Section H - The Bible: literature and sacred text A choice of two titles is given in sections E and H. Focus on objectives, knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes. Focus on Learning outcomes for the relevant section.
Teachers’ Role in Choosing a Coursework Title Decide to either: A) Give students a full choice from the listed titles B) Give students a limited choice from the titles C) Suggest a title to be covered as a class group Assist in the process of their research of each title and reflection on their coursework. Assist the students in choosing a suitable title of interest to them that ‘they would genuinely engage with’.

Completing the Coursework The students fill in a coursework booklet with two components: Part A: A summary of their investigation of the title. Part B: A personal reflection on the learning, skills and experience gained through undertaking the coursework.
Part A - Key Elements Identify the title he/she chose from the prescribed list for coursework. An indication of the sources of information that you used e.g. web based materials, literature, and other sources. An outline of the steps you took and the skills you used in investigating your chosen title. A summary of your findings on your chosen title.
Part B - Key Elements Personal reflection on the learning, skills and experiences gained through undertaking coursework on the chosen title. Why was the title of interest to you? Explain the rationale for selecting the title What different perspectives did you encounter in doing your coursework? What questions arose for you in doing this coursework?
Part B - Key Elements continued What personal insights have you gained through doing coursework on this title? What has been the most valuable part of doing coursework on this title?

Coursework titles are from sections of the course that will not appear in the written examination and may overlap with another section of the syllabus.
