BIOGRAPHIES ANNIE MCKEOWN O’DONOVAN Annie McKeown O’Donovan is a PhD student in the Philosophy department in NUI Galway, funded by a Galway Doctoral Research Scholarship. She has studied at NUI Galway (BA in Philosophy and Psychological Studies, MA in Philosophy: Ethics, Culture and Global Change) and in University College Dublin (MsC in Equality Studies). She has broad interests in areas of applied philosophy (bioethics, political philosophy), and on the use of philosophy to make a practical positive change in society. Annie is a Philosophy for Children (P4C) Level 1 facilitator (SAPERE-approved). LUCY ELVIS Lucy Elvis is a PhD student in the Philosophy department in NUI Galway, funded by a Galway Doctoral Research Scholarship. She has studied at Lunds Universitet, Sweden (MA in Visual Culture) and Leicester University, UK (BA in Art History and Politics.) She has also worked as a visual art curator and producer, director of 126 Gallery Galway, and is a board member of TULCA Festival of Visual Art. She is interested in the intersection of philosophy and culture (aesthetics) and in fostering philosophy outside the institution. She is a member of the Philosophy Ireland steering group. Lucy is a Philosophy for Children (P4C) Level 1 facilitator (SAPERE-approved) and has completed a residential summer school at the IAPC (Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children.) She also participated in the PDST (Professional Development Service for Teachers) P4C ‘Train the Trainer’ pilot. RACHEL VAN RIEL Rachel Van Riel founded Opening the Book in 1991 after discovering libraries offered the best possible context for the work she wished to do. Sometimes challenging as a ‘critical
friend’ to libraries, Rachel is a passionate advocate for libraries in the wider cultural and educational sector. Rachel introduced the concept of reader development which has changed the way public libraries engage with their customers. Starting from the reader has led Opening the Book into developing training, promotions, collections policy, websites, library furniture and complete new library designs. Rachel has taken reader- centred ideas to European countries from Norway to Hungary and also to North America and Australia. SINÉAD MORIARTY Sinéad was born and raised in Dublin where she grew up surrounded by books. She has published 13 novels with Penguin Random House. Her latest novel ‘Our Secrets and Lies’ has just been released. Sinéad writes a weekly column for the Irish independent and is the ambassador for the Eason’s ‘Sinéad and Rick’s Must Read’ book club. Find out more about Sinéad at www.sineadmoriarty.com CATRÍONA CROWE Catríona Crowe is the former Head of Special Projects at the National Archives of Ireland. She contributes regularly to broadcast and print media on cultural and historical matters. She has honorary doctorates from Maynooth University, Limerick University and University College Dublin, and is a member of the Royal Irish Academy. MANCHÁN MAGAN Manchán Magan is a writer and documentary maker. He has written numerous travel books in Irish and English. His travel documentaries focusing on issues of world culture have been shown in 25 territories around the world, an No Béarla, his documentary series on travelling around Ireland speaking only Irish sparked international debate.
PETER MURPHY Peter Murphy is a novelist, spoken-word performer, journalist and occasional actor. He is the author of two novels, John the Revelator (2009) and Shall We Gather at the River (2013), published by Faber & Faber in Ireland and the UK, and by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in the US and Canada. His fiction has been translated and published in Italy, France, the Czech Republic, Holland, Germany, Serbia, Romania and the Commonwealth countries, and nominated for the Costa, the Kerry Group Fiction Prize and the IMPAC. Peter’s journalism and non-fiction has appeared in Rolling Stone, The Guardian, the Irish Times, Hot Press and Huffington Post. He has released two spoken word/music albums with the Revelator Orchestra, The Sounds of John the Revelator and The Brotherhood of the Flood. For ten years he was a regular panellist on RTE’s arts review show The View with John Kelly, and was also a presenter on RTE’s The Works. He performs live under the name Cursed Murphy, and his first single, ‘Foxhole Prayer’ will be released at the end of September. He is currently writing his third book, a collection of short stories.
