Where is this famous Fort ? Don't even look for it there is no Fort in Fort-Mahon-Plage ! Where does this name came from ? In Picardian, a "Mahon" is a poppy, but, in the old days, "mahon" or "mahonnage" meant a fight. It is told that a little fort has been built deep in the dunes for the defence of the cost and the Baie d’Authie against a landing of former english people. According to the elder, this little fort has been so called, after an inspection of an officer named mahon.

Where could we admire the Seal ? - in Berck Sur Mer in the Authie Bay 20km (12 miles) - In the Bay of Somme 20km ( 12 miles) - At the Pointe du Hourdel 35km (21 miles) Seals forage at sea. Harbour seals can go as far as 60km (37 miles) from their resting sites. Some live in harbours and rivers. Grey seals travel much further. Seals can sleep in the water, this is called “bottling”. Comfortable in the water and by nature curious, seals regularly get close to the boats, drifting objects… The seals use the intertidal areas that emerge at low tide to rest out of the water . This is a very important time that allow them to regenerate their energy. For more safety they gather together. Uneasy on land, they are continuously on alert and go into the water as soon as they feel in danger. That’s why they always rest on a sand bank near a relatively deep channel so as to be able to escape easily. During breeding and moulting periods, seals need to be out of the water more often. At rising tide, they adopt the “Banana” position to stay dry for the longest time possible.
