Scope and Background Information This specification covers the requirements for pulse capacitors for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility Extraction Kicker Magnets. Each kicker magnet contains 28 capacitor banks with a nominal capacitance of 1,400 pF per bank. The capacitors are part of a pulse forming network, which constitutes the magnet, and will be pulsed approximately once every 0.7 seconds with an expected lifetime of 175,000 hours. To meet this lifetime, based on past Fermilab experience with ceramic capacitors, the operating voltage should be no more than 2/3 of their DC-rated voltage. Capacitors with a dielectric having a lower voltage coefficient of capacitance, and hence the lower mechanical displacement with the applied voltage, are more likely to succeed. Capacitance variation in response to temperature changes should be minimized in the magnet temperature operating range (40° C to 45° C). The typical operating temperature for the capacitors is about 42° C. Small variation in the capacitance is important in this application for the pulse-forming network to work properly: the magnet can be modified for small changes in absolute capacitance, but not for bank to bank variation. The capacitors will be QA/QC tested at receiving for conformance to this specification. LBNF Kicker Capacitor Specification -Rev. An initial purchase is being made for a prototype magnet, i.e. 28 capacitor banks. If the capacitors perform as required, a final purchase will be made for at least 8 magnets worth of capacitor banks, that is 8*14*2 = 224 capacitor banks of 1,400 pF each. The kicker magnets will be located inside an accelerator enclosure and will be subject to ionizing radiation. Therefore, the capacitors should be constructed of materials known to withstand radiation. Each capacitor will be encapsulated in a silicone room temperature vulcanizing rubber (SYLGARD™ 184) as part of the magnet construction. Capacitor banks must fit into the volume specified: the design and modeling have been made and tested with capacitors fitted in said volume. If increased volume allows the Temperature Coefficient of the Capacitance to be decreased, different geometries, with increased volume, will be considered. For instance, the 3” high (Figure 3) may be increased to be approximately 5” high (Figure 4). All proposed modifications from the preferred containment volume need to be submitted as part of the procurement process; project engineers will assess their acceptability. 2. Electrical Requirements 2.1 CAPACITANCE VALUE AND TOLERANCES • Individual capacitors shall be grouped in 1,400 pF banks. • The average capacitance value for all capacitor banks must be contained within +/-5 % of the nominal 1400 pF bank (at 40 ° C). • Capacitance variation from the average value within one lot of capacitor banks must be less than +/-2% (One lot equals 28 capacitor banks). I. e. ± 28 pF between banks • The difference in average capacitance bank values between lots must be less than +/-1%. I. e. can be handpicked to ± 14 pF. 2.2 VOLTAGE AND CURRENT • The DC voltage rating of the capacitor must be at least 40 kV. • Capacitors must be able to perform under repetition of waveforms represented in Figure 1 and Figure 2 with a voltage peak of 27 kV. o The pulse has a rise time and a fall time of 200 ns, with an 11 µs flattop. o Peak charging and discharging current are ~ 200 A. o The pulse voltage rating must be at least 27 kV. 2.3 REPETITION RATE / DUTY CYCLE • Capacitors must withstand a pulse rate of 1.43 Hz, i.e. a repetition rate of up to 1 pulse every 0.7 seconds. 2.4 LIFETIME REQUIREMENT • The expected lifetime of the capacitors must be at least 175,000 hours of continuous duty. 2.5 INDUCTANCE • Inductance must be less than 50 nH for each Capacitor Bank, or a self-resonant frequency greater than 20 MHz. 2.6 DIELECTRIC MATERIAL • The capacitor dielectric material shall be ceramic or mica. 2.7 VOLTAGE COEFFICIENTS OF CAPACITANCE • The voltage coefficient of capacitance from zero to rated DC voltage must be less than -5%, as measured with a low excitation signal of 1V, 1 kHz. 2.8 TEMPERATURE COEFFICIENTS OF CAPACITANCE • The Temperature Coefficient of each capacitor bank must be less than +/- 2% between 40° C and 45° C, or about 1.25% per ° C in the said temperature range. 3. Mechanical Requirements 3.1 CASE SIZE AND CONNECTIONS • The case must be non-metallic and have low-inductance threaded connections for the connection terminals. • The capacitor weight must be supported by its own terminals when mounted. • The 1,400 pF capacitor bank, with the proposed number of capacitors and assembly configuration, shall preferably be contained in a volume of approximately 3.84” x 2.5” x 3.0” [See Figure 3]. If needed, the contained volume may be extended to a maximum of approximately 3.84” x 2.5” x 5.0” [See Figure 4]. 3.2 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS • The finished capacitor assembly must be compatible with silicone (SYLGARD™ 184) RTV encapsulation. • Capacitors must be compatible with storage temperatures between 0° C and 50° C. • Capacitors will be subject to ionizing radiation of 1 MegaRad per year, therefore, must be able to survive 30 MegaRads during their 30 years lifetime. o Materials that are known to survive this radiation level are ceramic, metal, mica, and epoxy. Inquiries about different materials can be made. o Materials that may be acceptable are hard plastics with high service temperatures. o Materials that are not acceptable are oils, liquids, soft plastics, and PTFE. 3.3 MARKING DATA • The following minimal information must be permanently imprinted on each capacitor: - Manufacturer's Name / Logo - Manufacturer's Model Number or Part Number - Nominal (working) Voltage - Manufacturing Date, or Date Code - Serial Number LBNF Kicker Capacitor Specification -Rev.
