Collect of the Day
Almighty God, on the holy mount you revealed to chosen witnesses your well-beloved Son,
wonderfully transfigured: mercifully deliver us from the darkness of this world, and change us
into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

              THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD
First Reading: Exodus 34: 29-35
Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets
of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had
been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was
shining, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all
the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them. Afterward all the
Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him
on Mount Sinai. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but
whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he
came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, the
Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would
put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

                                                                                                  3
Psalm 99 Atkins
The Lord is King; let the peoples tremble; he sitteth upon the cherubim; let the earth be moved.
The Lord is great in Sion, and high above all the peoples.
Let them give thanks unto thy Name, which is great and wonderful; for he is holy.
The King’s power loveth judgement; though does establish equity: thou does execute judgement
and righteousness in Jacob.
O magnify the Lord our God, and fall down before his footstool; for he is holy.
Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among such as call upon his Name: these called
upon the Lord, and he heard them.
He spake unto them out of the cloudy pillar; for they kept his testimonies and the law that he
gave them.
Thou heardest them, O Lord our God; thou forgavest them O God, though thou didst punish
their doings.
O magnify the Lord our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the Lord our God is holy.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 3: 12- 4:2
Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over
his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set
aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of
the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this
very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord,
the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is
freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a
mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this
comes from the Lord, the Spirit. Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in
this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we
refuse to practice cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we
commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God.

Gradual Hymn: 166 We Have Come at Christ’s Own Bidding
O Mein Jesu, Ich Muss Sterben

Gospel Alleluia: 710 O Filii et Filiae

The Gospel: Luke 9: 28-43
Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and
went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face
changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah,
talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about
                                                                                                    4
to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but
since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as
they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three
dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. While
he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered
the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to
him!” When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those
days told no one any of the things they had seen.

New! 2022 Lenten Series at St. Matthew’s: We are hosting a Lenten series this year on Zoom.
Due to the magic of technology, we are collaborating with Canon Kevin Flynn and his new
parish of Chelsea Lascelles Wakefield, and will be reading Richard Rohr’s latest book, The Wisdom
Pattern: Order - Disorder - Reorder (2020). https://spckpublishing.co.uk/wisdom-pattern-pb Kevin and I
both very much enjoy the work of Richard Rohr, as do many of you. Our plan is simple: we will
read a few chapters each week in Lent, and meet to discuss them on Tuesday nights from 7:00
pm to 8:30 pm. Our Zoom link will be the regular link we use for our St. Matthew’s Zoom
conversations and events. We have ordered a dozen copies of this book from a local book
vendor. If you wish to secure a copy for yourself, please send me an email at
revgeoffchapman@stmatthewsottawa.ca and I’ll make sure to keep one aside for you at the
church. We are paying $24 for each copy. You can also find this book online and in a more
affordable e-book format. Of course, if you just want to read the book on your own, and know
its themes may appear in my sermons and in our conversations as a parish, feel free to do that as
well! I think the themes of this book are exactly what I need this Lent, and this may be the same
for you. I hope you consider joining us on Tuesday nights in Lent for our study
series! Rev. Geoff+

New Time! Conversations: Please join Canon Jim Beall for Conversations on Sunday mornings
from 9:00 to 9:45am on Zoom. (The Zoom session will open at 8:45 and will end promptly at

Sunday. To receive the background material please contact Janice Sonnen:

New! Spring into Green: Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has a hyper-local focus that
supports local agriculture. It is more in tune with the regional growing seasons. Food
wastes are reduced because produce remains fresh longer from the time of purchase. Some farms
also offer "happy" meat from free-range, ethically-raised animals. Local farmers, whether through
farmers markets, home delivery, or selling at the farms themselves, cut out the middle step of
distributors. Ottawa area CSA growers include Bryson Farms, Catena Farms and Roots and
Shoots. A good source for farms is the Ottawa Farmers Market. Many of the vendors there also
have a CSA service.

How will you increase your stewardship of God’s Earth during Lent?

Ash Wednesday Services: Ash Wednesday is the first day in the season of Lent. We begin our
journey to Easter by symbolically marking our foreheads with a cross of ashes. This is a beautiful
service, which call us first and foremost to enter into Lent with humility and gratitude. Ash
Wednesday services will be held on March 2 at 12pm and 7pm. (The 7pm service will be live-
streamed.)

In-Person Services Recommencing: The 8am Sunday morning service will recommence on

Recycle your used Christmas cards: Give your used and enjoyed Christmas cards another life!
We are once again collecting the front portion of used Christmas cards. These will be used to
make handmade cards and tags for St. Matthew's Christmas card fundraiser. They were very
popular last year and all cards were sold! Please leave your donations in the box at the back of the
church. Thank you!
