Editor’s Note I hope everyone had an awesome Christmas and New Year’s break. Me and Mine decided to do a little exploring and it brings to mind all the areas in New Zealand that a lot of locals never go to see. Many of us will plan the big OE before we have ever really explored NZ. I can tell you, you are missing out on so much. A few years back when time and money where short, we would plan weekend excursions to places we had never been, one of these was a trip to the Forgotten World Highway from Stratford to Taumarunui. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a journey for the faint hearted. If you don’t like spending hours driving (including a few windy gravel roads) and seeing our beautiful countryside, it may not be for you. This time however, we decided to revisit this little gem, and based ourselves in a little known place called Tangarakau, which like others in the area, used to be a thriving township built for the workers who were building the railway. In its heyday it boasted a hairdresser, tobacconist, post office, maternity home, police station and many other businesses. But when the railroad was done, it became like a ghost town. People drifted away and the buildings were dismantled. Luckily for a few of the locals, manuka honey has saved the area from being completely abandoned. Our time away saw us visit a canyon with wild horses, a ghost town, Whangamomona Pub and town (a must stop, the history of the pub and township are epic, and you will encounter some colourful locals who will be happy to chat). On our way out, we had to visit the “Bridge to Somewhere”, only to say we have now done both the Bridges to “Nowhere” and “Somewhere” and I am pretty sure we also saw the “Bridge to Elsewhere”. On our trip we also included “Marakopa Falls” (absolutely stunning), Mangapohue Natural Bridge, and the Waikawau Tunnel Beach. The tunnel was dug by 3 men in 1911, using only picks and shovels. The farm is hilly, so it was easier to drive the cattle along the beach and through the tunnel. A few photos on the next page. I recommend searching out these hidden Gems in our own backyard, as it’s a great way to reground yourself and visit old NZ where life is simpler and people friendlier. Life in these remote areas is far more relaxed than the hustle bustle of everyday life in the Big Smoke, and they could benefit significantly from internal tourism. I would love to get other peoples vacation stories, if you would like to share any local trips of overseas logs, please feel free to contact us to have your story published. Vicki 3

Alan Cole - Franklin Local Board Ph. 021 923-719 Firstly, Happy New Year, hopefully you have had a great summer break, even though it has been cooler and cloudier than normal for December and January. Just a reminder that even though we have had some significant rain in December, the Fire season is currently a closed and NO FIRES are permitted unless it is an approved fire type (for cooking purposes). Visit www.checkitsalright.nz to see which fires are allowed during this time. All permits are suspended until the prohibited season is lifted. Bookings are now open for Auckland Council’s 2020 inorganic service. You can make a booking in-person at your local Service Centre, on line at www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/rubbish-recycling/inorganic-collections/Pages/what- put-out-inorganic-collection.aspx or by calling 09 301 0101. What can and can’t be sent can be found at the above link. More than 6000 tonnes of material have been diverted from landfill since the service was rolled out in 2015. On 1 November 2019, Auckland Council implemented changes to the Dog Management Bylaw, introducing consistency with rules across the region. From December 1 to March 1 dogs are allowed at popular public places, including beaches and parks, up until 10am and after 5pm. No time rules apply outside of the summer season. In addition to the new policy, the council will also be changing the way that other information relating to dog access areas is presented so that it is clear and consistent across the region. The council is reformatting the information presented to list all the areas where owners can take their dog off-leash, where a time and season rule applies, and where dog access rules have changed for the protection of wildlife. This does not change the status of areas, just the way we present information so that it is easy to understand. Future decisions about the type of access rules that apply at local parks and beaches will continue to be made by local boards. More information can be found about the new bylaw can be found at www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/plans-projects- policies-reports-bylaws/bylaws/Pages/dog-management-bylaw.aspx or by calling 09 301 0101. Phoenix Palms A new year often spurs us to get things done and do things better this year. If you have one of the previously popular Phoenix Palms in your property that has outgrown the space or is now shabby , maybe its time to be brave. They can look great, are wind resistant, but the rats and pigeons love them too. They have poisonous spikes at the trunk end of the fronds which are incredibly painful under your skin, are very messy, and the sap and moisture - like many palms - is highly corrosive to your chainsaw and will “ eat ” it from the inside out, if not cleaned properly after use. The fibrous “wood” is also heavy and the debris is not easy to dispose of. A removal is not for the inexperienced, you need a professional for this job. If your palm doesn’t need removing, regular maintenance is essential as they become very unsightly, but we could make it great again. If you are not sure, call us. With 30 years experience Mike will give you honest advice and a competitive price. With a no ” hard sell” philosophy, our testimonials speak for themselves. Live By It or Laugh At It? Opinions are like noses – everyone has one. The only real mistake is one from which we learn nothing. A closed mouth gathers no foot! Some days you are the bug – some days you are the windshield! The most wasted day of all is one in which we have not laughed. The best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person. Life is a journey not a destination. Everything is okay in the end…. If it’s not okay, then it’s not the end. If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way. The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen, or even touched – they must be felt with the heart. Do not look back and grieve over the past – for it has gone….. and do not be troubled about the future for it has not yet come, Live in the present and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering. Thrift is a wonderful virtue – especially in an ancestor. Those who forget the past, are condemned to relive it. Any married man should forget his mistakes…. There’s no use in two people remembering the same thing. CHILDREN – Tired of being harassed by your parents? – leave home, get a job and support yourself while you still know everything! Borrow money from a pessimist, he doesn’t expect to get it back. Real friends are those who..when you’ve made a fool of yourself…don’t think you’ve done a permanent job! Life is full of shadows…but sunshine makes them all. If your mind isn’t open – keep your mouth shut too. My husband wears the pants in our family but I tell him which pair to wear”. 29

Waiau Pa Volunteer Fire Brigade Santa and his Fire Fighter helpers riding in the Fire Engine and the Support Van visited the local area on Christmas Day. 2019 had 140 calls. There were 63 (45%) Fire and Property and 77 (55%) medical calls. January has seen us busy with 9 calls; 7 Fire / Property and 2 medical. Emergency vehicles If an emergency vehicle (such as an ambulance, fire engine or police car) is coming towards you or behind you, and is using sirens and/or flashing red, blue, or blue and red lights, you must pull over and, if necessary, stop and allow it to pass. The Fire Siren, Pagers and SMS advise the 24 Fire Fighters and Operational Support members to report to the Station. All members may respond to the station to man the appliances and organise resources. All members are volunteers and drive to the station at normal road speed on the three major access roads. If you stop (or slow) at an incident please pull well to the left to allow the responding Fire Fighters to pass. Fire Advice Fire Fighters attending car crashes (MVA) see major injuries and property (vehicle) damage. Many were leaving the Beach. The crashes on corners were not caused by drivers travelling on an unknown road. Help us by advising your visitors to slow down on country roads. www.facebook.com/waiaupafire www.merlinit.co.nz Murray Gallagher Counties Computer Consultants 47
