Local Cities & Towns Port Angeles Known as the Gateway to Olympic National Park, Port Angeles also serves as the US port for the Coho Ferry to Victoria. Stroll the waterfront trail, hike Hurricane Ridge, browse the antique shops, and enjoy all that the city has to offer. Sequim Often referred to as America’s Provence, Sequim is located in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains and enjoys an ideal climate for the thousands of lavender plants in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. Boutique shops abound, and a local museum showcases the art and history of the valley. Forks Located in the heart of the Olympic Peninsula, Forks has a long tradition as a logging community. In recent years, Forks is best known as the setting for the Twilight fiction series by Stephanie Meyer. Nearby destinations include the Hoh Rain Forest, the west coast beaches, and the northwest tip of the continental USA at Cape Flattery. Port Townsend Located at the northeast tip of the Olympic Peninsula, Port Townsend is a picturesque Victorian-era seaport. From art galleries to whale-watching to quaint gift shops, this eclectic town abounds in natural scenery. Port Gamble Founded as a company mill town in 1853, Port Gamble invites you to step back in time to the Pacific Northwest of 100 years ago with its historic buildings, quiet streets, and picturesque views. Victoria, British Columbia Easily reached via the Coho Ferry from Port Angeles, Victoria is the Garden City of Canada. The Inner Harbour boasts the Empress Hotel and BC Parliament Buildings along with a wide variety of gift shops. The Grey Line bus offers tours to Butchart Gardens. Be sure to bring your passport! Seattle Perhaps best known for the Space Needle and Pike Place Market, Seattle is located on the beautiful Puget Sound just a short ferry ride from the Olympic Peninsula. Horseback Riding Red Hawk Stables Red Hawk Stables is the one and only Guided Trail Riding Facility open to the public on the Olympic Peninsula. Biking An abundance of trails, combined with scenic rural roads, make the Olympic Peninsula a great place for cycling. An increasing number of organized rides occur throughout the year, and several bike shops actively support the biking community. Bike-Friendly Trails Olympic Discovery Trail This paved trail begins in Port Townsend and will ultimately reach all the way to the west coast. Currently the trail is completed as far west as the Elwha River Bridge with additional completed sections around Lake Crescent and near the coast. https://www.olympicdiscoverytrail.org Mountain Biking Trails in Olympic National Forest Trails within the Olympic National Forest vary from steep, challenging trails to narrow gravel roads. Tour de Forts This tour, held in early June, starts at Fort Worden, makes a stop at Old Fort Townsend State Park, and visits Fort Flagler, taking the cyclist through the history of Jefferson County. S’Klallam Totem Tour Recumbent Ride This no-fee, open registration event in mid-July takes riders to more than 40 local Jamestown S’Klallam totem poles between Blyn and Sequim using the Olympic Discovery Trail and local bike paths. Waterfalls & Hot Springs Marymere Falls Marymere Falls is one of the favorite destinations for our guests at George Washington Inn. At a leisurely pace, you can hike this trail through the lush forest to the falls and back in about an hour and a half. With assistance, it is also an accessible hike to the lower viewpoint. Located just south of Lake Crescent. http://www.georgewashingtoninn.com/destinations Sol Duc Falls & Hot Springs Just a short distance west of Lake Crescent, turn south on Sol Duc Hot Springs Road and drive about 12 miles through old growth forest, past the salmon run, to the hot springs, offering three mineral hot spring soaking pools and one freshwater pool. The falls are located a short 1.6 mile round trip hike from the hot springs. Consider extending your hike to take in the scenic Lover’s Lane trail – another 2.8 miles from the falls back to the hot springs. Madison Creek Falls This falls is easily accessible by everyone, including visitors who may be wheelchair-bound or have other mobility challenges, via a short 200-foot paved path to the base of the falls. Beaches West Coast Beaches Local Beaches Dungeness Spit and Wildlife Refuge The Dungeness Spit is one of the world’s longest sand spits, and it shelters a bay that is rich in marine life, waterfowl and migrating birds. Whether pursuing the 5.5-mile hike to the New Dungeness Lighthouse or simply enjoying a casual stroll along the beach, the vistas and wildlife are amazing. https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/dungeness- national-wildlife-refuge Rialto Beach One of the most popular and easily-accessed beaches on the Olympic Peninsula, Rialto Beach is perhaps best known for the Hole-in-the-Wall, a sea stack formation. It begins with a short climb and ends with a short steep descent to the Pillar Point beach. Lighthouses Our location on the northern coast of Washington State provides an unparalleled view of over ten lighthouses and easy driving access to several more. A few are open for tours, others are inaccessible, but all are still in operation. New Dungeness Easily visible from the inn’s piazza, the upstairs veranda, and the north windows of all of our guest suites, the New Dungeness Lighthouse sits at the end of the Dungeness Spit just a short drive from the inn. To reach the lighthouse requires a 5.5 mile hike along the Spit or a charter boat trip aboard the Water Limousine, but the lighthouse keepers will gladly give you a tour of the lighthouse when you reach this destination. http://www.newdungenesslighthouse.com Ediz Hook Although the original lighthouse has been moved into Port Angeles and is now used as a private residence, there is still a beacon atop the control tower of the Coast Guard Station that serves the northwest’s deepest harbor in Port Angeles. https://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=147 Cape Flattery Cape Flattery was named by Captain James Cook on March 22, 1778 when he wrote, "there appeared to be a small opening which flattered us with the hopes of finding an harbour ... Local Parks Olympic Game Farm Get up close and personal with wildlife as you drive through 84 acres of terrain that is home to a variety of free-ranging animals that include llama, yak, elk, bison, deer, zebra, and domestic horses. In addition, be sure to wave to the bears – there’s a good chance they’ll wave back! As you drive through the park, you may feed the animals through your car windows.
