Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21 PRESIDENT’S REPORT 12 months ago I sat down to write my report in the midst of a State wide lockdown due to increased numbers of the Corona virus working their way through the Community. Tonight as I tap away on the keyboard we are mid-way through Lockdown 6.0 in a world vastly different from what we all new. Globally there has been in excess of 204 million cases of the virus with 4.3 million deaths. So how did this impact on our cricket season ? We were indeed fortunate to start as scheduled albeit a week later than anticipated, with a predominately un-interrupted program, with the exception of a one week lockdown in January. As mentioned in last year’s report, Pete Marshall took over the reigns as Head Coach, with Al Manning, Asanka Gurusinhe and Jono Boyd providing great assistance. Asanka was duly appointed as the Head Coach for Nigeria and moved overseas just before the Christmas break. These guys are passionate about our Cricket Club, and certainly displayed that passion and commitment across a difficult and logistically challenging season. I thank them for their time and effort, and am pleased to say that both at Board level and across the Coaching Group we share the same vision and mission to improve our Club. The season provided some new challenges as we all felt our way along the Covid safe journey, having to check in at training, matches and when entering the Clubrooms. Afternoon teas were a thing of the past as it was no longer possible for Clubs to provide food and drinks to players, each having to bring their own. Change rooms were off limits and cricket balls required to be sanitised every 14 overs. With restrictions on crowd numbers, our social activities were severely hampered, with capacity limits on our social rooms and numbers within the facility. This provided a major fund raising challenge and pretty much destroyed opportunity for sponsorship arrangements with many local businesses going through tough times. With social gatherings permitted outdoors, we were indeed fortunate to be supported by our regular friends and spectators, supporting our Blaster cricket on Friday nights and our home games on Saturdays. Off field we made some significant in-roads with our debt reduction program, and we secured Turner Road No 2 in Highett as our second Premier ground, returning our 5th and 6th XI’s to St Bedes College. We unveiled our new electronic scoreboard in Round 1, completing our current infrastructure projects, and saved our regular attendant Annette some pain and suffering from the elements. This now puts us in place to focus on our strategic cricket direction and improving our on-field capability. We have a secure plan including processes to re-build and improve, so I’d encourage all our current players to get on board. On the cricketing side we bolstered a secure supporting relationship with SECA to foster young players to the Premier system, and we saw the return of the Under 16 Dowling Shield to the Premier cricket fixture. These are indeed important initiatives for the Club, opening a defined pathway for talented young players to the Hawks in coming seasons. The Dowling format will migrate to an Under 17 competition in 2021/22, and will now culminate in a final series. Many thanks to those involved in providing support to the SECA representative and Dowling sides. Our performances across the season showed promise, drastically increasing our win/loss ratio from the previous season across all grades. We realise that we need to improve, and our focus is to attract and foster young local talent to the Club, moving forward. We have some of the best facilities in Premier cricket, an outstanding Coaching team, and a well-supported, Community focused environment, so the opportunity is available for all players to hone their skills, work hard, and improve their performances. P a g e 7 | 61
Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21 I would urge all our players to focus on their cricket, their fitness, and their improvement, and not let trivial distractions hamper the chance to get better; leave the Club stuff to the Committee, the ground activities to the Curating team, and the coaching to the Coaches. Once again our Committee worked harder than ever to facilitate the Covid requirements, ensuring that all designated processes were followed, and keeping our members in a safe and healthy environment. Many thanks to new Administration Officer Tom Brain for his assistance, and for following the ever changing Covid protocol journey in his supplementary role of Covid officer. I’m not sure many people realise how much extra time the Covid protocols took to prepare, revise, and implement, so I thank all our Committee members for their efforts and commitment. To Jake Marnie, Lyle D’Rozario, Jono Boyd and Matty Acocks, not moving on in a Committee role, I thank you for your efforts, and hope that you gained something for the experience. To Lyle in particular, we wish you well in your coaching endeavours and thank you for your efforts across many years at the Club, and to Matty, many thanks for looking after the Friday Night Blaster program. Many thanks to all our Captains across all grades and competitions, particularly Jonty Noonan for taking on the 5th XI and guiding them to a final’s appearance, only to be shafted by the weather. Our Junior program, again brilliantly led by Sue Cater, stepped up another level, with participation levels on the increase, and with the Under 12 teams again utilising Walter Galt No 2 as a home base, adding a whole new dimension to our Friday night Community cricket events. A special thank you to all our Junior Coaches, team managers, parents, supporters and players who have made the Junior Program an outstanding area of Club culture. Thanks also to our volunteers who provide great assistance in the roles they undertake:- Liam Pidd – Friday night/ function barman Jo McKenzie – Saturday/function barperson Mark Ruddy – BBQ king, Cleaner, dishwasher Craig Reece – 1st XI scorer & Historian James Moloney – 2nd XI scorer Annette Cann – Scoreboard attendant Brian Hunt – Wicket/Nets maintenance/Cleaner and general handy work Kevin Sullivan – Clubroom cleaning Darren Sheehan for his general assistance and the Club Room cleaning in Kev’s absence Paul Crowe – Managing and maintaining our bar stock, and assistance with our meals on Thursday and Friday nights. Tony Hawkins for setup and dismantling the practice nets In a year very different to normal, our social activities were kept to a minimum. We were indeed fortunate enough to celebrate the naming of our pavilion in honour of Brian Hunt and Greg McLeod. Unfortunately Greg lost his battle last October. The passing of Greg, a stalwart of the Club, Life member and Hall of Famer, has left a huge hole in the operations of the Club, and our Community in general. It is difficult to quantify the number of tasks undertaken by Greg, and it is only as we move forward, the enormity of the parts that Greg played in the Club’s development. He is, and will continue to be, sorely missed by all of us. The upcoming 2021/22 season is approaching quickly, however we have a strange sense of de ja vu with the lead up to last season and the imposition of the Corona virus and our adaptive lifestyle. Our pre-season training regime has been interrupted and again proving a challenge for both coaches and players. P a g e 8 | 61
Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21 Lockdowns are a part of our regular daily life, and we now have several vaccines, and an important rush to get everyone vaccinated to enable some form of resemblance of a normal way of life. We need to be brave and follow the imposed rules, getting vaccinated when we can, as this is the only opportunity for society to move forward. We need to undertake our own fitness work when permitted, and keep tabs on our mates. There will be a cricket season, and I urge all supporters and our Community to get behind the Club, our young playing group, support where you can, stay safe and positive, and reach out to a mate, if and when it becomes a challenge. We are all doing it tough, but if we remain positive and stay focused we will get through. This cricket season signals the start of our new journey, fostering youth, empowering young players, and fostering gradual improvement. Let us all get on board and support our charges. Go Hawks! Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21 AUDIT REPORT Qualified Opinion The purpose of the audit is to express an opinion on the financial report of Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club, which comprises the Balance Sheet as at 31 May 2021, the Profit & Loss Statement, and notes to the financial statements, including a summary of significant accounting policies, and the responsible entities declaration. In our opinion, except for the effect of the matters described in the “Basis of Qualified Opinion” section of our report, the accompanying financial report of Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club gives a true and fair view of the entity’s financial position as at 31 May 2021 and of its financial performance for the year then ended. Basis for Qualified Opinion 1. Cash takings in the form of player subscriptions, bar sales and canteen sales are a significant source of revenue for Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club. The control mechanisms surrounding the receipt, collection and recording of cash prior to entry into its financial records are insufficient or unable to be subsequently verified. Accordingly, as the evidence available to us regarding this revenue from this source was limited, our audit procedures with respect to cash receipts and payments had to be restricted to the amounts recorded in the financial records. We, therefore are unable to express an opinion on whether the recorded cash income and expenses are complete. 2. All assets in the Balance Sheet are represented at the purchase prices rather their current written down or market values. Additionally, Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club does not have a current record of the specific memorabilia that are in the club’s possession. Such assets have not been valued nor have they been sighted to confirm their continued existence. We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are independent of the registered entity in accordance with the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board’s APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the financial report in Australia. We have also fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. Other Information The Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club are responsible for the other information. The other information comprises the information included in the registered entity’s annual report for the year ended 31 May 2021, but does not include our auditor’s report. Our opinion on the financial report does not cover the other information and accordingly we do not express any form of assurance conclusion thereon. The scope of the audit does not extend to the other information and, thus, does not consider whether the other information is materially inconsistent with the financial report or our knowledge obtained in the audit or otherwise appears to be materially misstated. We have nothing to report and express no opinion in this regard. Responsibilities of Responsible Entities for the Financial Report The responsible entities of the entity are responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards and for such internal control as the responsible entities determine is necessary to enable the preparation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. In preparing the financial report, entities are responsible for assessing the entity’s ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the responsible entities either intends to liquidate the registered entity or to cease operations, or has no realistic alternative but to do so. P a g e 12 | 61
Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21 The responsible entities are responsible for overseeing the entity’s financial reporting process. Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a whole is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of the financial report. As part of an audit in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards, we exercise professional judgement and maintain professional skepticism throughout the audit. We also: - Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control. - Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the registered entity’s internal control. - Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates and related disclosures made by responsible entities. - Conclude on the appropriateness of the responsible entity’s use of the going concern basis of accounting and, based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt on the registered entity’s ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditor’s report to the related disclosures in the financial report or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the date of our auditor’s report. However, future events or conditions may cause the registered entity to cease to continue as a going concern. - Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial report, including the disclosures, and whether the financial report represents the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation. We communicate with the entity regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit and significant audit findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit. Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21 HEAD COACH’S REPORT Season 2020/21 Committee, Players, Life Members, Sponsors and Supporters, its my pleasure to present the Coaches report for the 20/21 season. Certainly a roller coaster ride coming into be Development Coach to Interim, Caretaker and then appointed Senior Coach in late July. Being a Covid affected season, the landscape was very different, and limited pre season proved challenging for the Coaching Group. Getting to know the players and their abilities took time, and to be honest it was a work in progress from round 1 to 17. Together with my great Friend and good Sporting person Alan Manning, and Jono Boyd we understand the task ahead and will show the same commitment and passion to improve our performances and provide a good environment for Young cricketers in the Bayside area, Facilities, equipment The centre wicket and practice wickets were terrific and continual rotation helped. Many thanks to Adam and his team, Chris and Fish, also to our legend Hunty. The purchase of new covers helped, and we need to store them carefully over winter. It would be of great advantage if we could entertain centre wicket training a few more times throughout the upcoming season. The new shed proved to be a great asset and enabled us to store and care for our training aids. Our bowling machines used constantly, and the addition of a new Bola would even be better.. Each team had dedicated warm up kits and these were of great benefit. Our rooms at the Galt were always spotless, you couldn’t fault our ground and clubhouse with the new scoreboard. Our outfield played terrific despite some indifferent match reports which we should ignore.. haha, Purely a privilege to play at the Galt. The addition of Frogbox live match day video streaming proved to be a vital coaching tool moving forward… many thanks for that..Brett and committee. Committee Help Players and Coaches couldn’t have asked for anymore, and Match day with Geebung, Tom, Brett, Danny, Phil, etc was excellent. Thurs nite with Danny, Darren, Mark etc all went well, and between Tom and JR we got thru the backroom stuff. Thanks to Jake, Lyle and Cocksy for sorting apparel and social stuff, however we need more support in this area. SECA and Dowling Programs This is our future ! We met with the SECA Board in April and re-connected with Cricket Southern Bayside. We have an agreement in place to foster the SECA Rep teams, and provide coaches and facilities for the next 3 years. We kept our word with Kim … ran their representative training, trials, and nets, and then provided coaches and venues. This enabled us to tap into the kids for the Dowling Team and we put ourselves on the map. Well done to Niv, Al, Patty and Jono. Tom for scoring, Sue for helping and all involved. Winter Academy A 10 Session program has been conducted with assistance from Senior players and Al Manning. We had 36 boys sign up and the program I believe has run wonderfully. Both indoor and outdoor sessions have been conducted and this is a prelude to some lads joining the Hawks, some auditioning for the Dowling Program in Jan 22, and others doing the Academy again next year. Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21 Practice Captain: Tony did a serviceable job and had the nets for training. Chairman of Selection: Phil O”Meara Many thanks to all gentlemen, team is better than individuals, and we provided all players with quality support and commitment. To the Scorers and Team Managers.. Craig, James and Geebung and of course Tom Brain, you all made a wonderful commitment and great support on match days. Thank you to Annette for scoring and Emma No 1 Supporter. Captains & Selection Many thanks and acknowledgement to the Skippers - Shorye, Lyle, Kaidan, Arun and Jonty. Jake, Matt,Tom and Riley also assisted during the year. To have stability with leadership is vital and everyone carried their duties out with dignity, respect and diligence. Training… Structure and variety are 2 key elements to training and with excellent facilities, training was well attended throughout the entire season. Extra sessions allowed the players to utilize the nets and coaches, however we need to improve as individuals, and as a team many players need to train with more purpose and intensity. We conducted some centre wicket nights and of course this proved to be beneficial, and had 3 practice games prior to Rnd 1 which proved to be worthwhile as we hit the ground running early doors. Pre-season moving forward has been planned, and will involve outdoor, fitness, and 2 Indoor Centres beginning July thru to October Rnd 1. A planned weekend to Mooroopna will be a worthy opportunity to play on turf prior to the first game. 2021 Washup 18 wins out of 56 games played - 33% win ratio, 17 honourable losses, 8 bad losses 6 centurions, 25 50’s from 14 diff players,4 bowlers took a 5 for.. Sen twice In the 1s we had 17 players play with 6 debut, In the 2s we had 27 players play, 4s we used 29 players 4 of our Dowling lads played in the premier grades, with 75 players (I think) representing the Club at Premier level. The Club finished 16th in Club Championship 1s - 18th 2 w 13 losses 2 draws, 2s - 15th 5 w 9 losses 3 draws, 3s - 10th 7 w 7 losses 2 draws, 4s - 4 wins 9 losses 3 draws, 5s played finals with 1 win in semi, 16s in the Dowling had 3 w 2 losses and played bloody well. 1s batted our overs out on 5 occassions, 2s batted our overs out on 8 occassions, 1s only had 2 open partnerships over 40, 2s had 6 open partnerships over 40 5 times we were worse than 5/50 in the 1s, Only 2 occasions the 2s were worse than 2/50 Obviously a highlight for me was the Premier U16 Dowling program and our club getting the exposure. We played two T20 games against local Community clubs which provided great engagement and opening our club up to the SECA community again a highlight. Numbers at training justified what we had in place, only twice did we go indoor. The general buy in was pleasing and the assistance from all to set up, pack up was noted. All teams had warm up kits which have been returned and we have a plentiful supply of balls which I did not start with. Tools for training were adequate and we have set up some good standards and routines. Yes we can change it up, split groups etc, pool, beach, other sports. I just felt the wickets were so good and our skills needed work, and with weekly selection we need to train our arses off…. Thurs nites were normally well attended. Well done again to Committee for the Dinners etc, and Match day was always in order by the Committee. Our Coaches prepared well and most players attended on time. Communication with the group was largely left to the Coaches and Geebung. Moving forward we will engage more and have more Strategy based meetings, plus some bonding sessions. As for the list, I understand players come and go. I am disappointed 1 or 2 have chosen to go to other Premier clubs, however I wish them well but I cant hide my disappointment when we give so much of our time to them. P a g e 16 | 61
Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21 To Alex, Lyle, Jake, Tom and Kaidin thank you for your time at the Hawks, espec Lyle D’Rozario a 10 year loyal servant and outstanding player and leader, Best wishes to these guys. Premier lists need to be continually massaged and opportunity given, and we will do this. Our list is young and we will get games into the players with a mix of leadership and experience. The pluses Moving Forward We have Great Facilities, Ownership and control of our ground, Unwaivering support from a loyal and stable committee, and Committed coaches and players, going into 2nd year understanding each other This season saw a huge upside from previous years in field performance, with a young group invested and growing together. A return to Red Ball Cricket, gives us more time to learn our game and our mate’s game also. Super Slam will be back on Tuesday evenings, and we will continue to provide games with local clubs involving all players Continuation of Dowling Program at Under 17 level next season and we will continue with a Local bayside feel and support We need to Improve in : Our Work Rate at Training, Fitness and Fielding levels, Understanding your role and level of ability what is your best fit, Game smarts, and Leadership. We will provide enhanced Coaching with more 1 on 1 sessions and further develop our young playing list We will increase our Feedback to Players and offer more engagement. Pre Season will be structured and we will look to bring experienced players to the fold through targeted recruiting We also need to Tidy up our on and off field behaviour etc... In closing:- In a year/season where we stop/started and ran into Game 1 on short notice, our early indicators were very positive. Practice games and training saw great vibe and that continued most of the year, however the weekly grind caught up with our group with injury, form and some players found wanting- desire and application , together with fitness. The ability to compete and get into the contest and challenge was heartening in most grades in most games. We had significant good press and our brand is out there. Overall, we have a future to be the Destination Club in the Bayside area. Let’s get more good cricket heads into the Club, stick tight, adopt a NO Dickhead Policy and engage young men who want to be good cricketers and good people. We need Stability and solid Group togetherness to achieve. The Club in general is in a much better and stronger place than it was a couple of years ago. The coaching team and leadership group have prioritized giving opportunities where possible, and adding depth to the side where necessary (which we are also actively recruiting for and working on). The Club's plan is strong, and the improvements can be seen in a quantifiable manner in the win% throughout the grades Stick together, work hard together, each player understand their role, have trust in team mates, captain and coaches, and all working towards a common goal. Lets make the Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club a great place to come and play and execute your skills in the best competition in Melbourne. My door is always open, Yours in cricket . Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21 FIFTH XI Covid 19, how it changed the landscape & presented challenges for cricket for Season 2020/2021! With Covid restrictions & the season being all One Day games, it made for an interesting one! When Chris (Porno) Murphy & I were approached &offered the captaincy of the 5 th XI, the club wanted someone with age, experience, a great cricket brain & a great leader. Porno, the obvious choice, said “No”! This old has-been hack, with a broken down body & stuff all captaincy experience said ‘Yeah, I’ll give it a crack!” It was one of the most fun & enjoyable years of cricket I’ve ever had! We played 36 players this season, many being given an opportunity to play 4ths & even 3rds Premier cricket, which was the aim, with the 5ths being classed as a development side. Thank you all for your support all year & the opportunity to lead you. WE HAD A GREAT YEAR, I hope you enjoyed the season & playing alongside & under me. To those that filled in when we were short, your efforts & contributions were noticed & muchly appreciated by all. To those moving on, good luck with your cricket & careers elsewhere. For the rest, I look forward to seeing you all next season. Our best wins, playing really good team cricket, were against Beaumaris at home, Bonbeach (Premiers) at home & Cheltenham twice at home, including the Semi Final. We didn’t lose a game at home all season! We won 8 games, including the Semi Final, lost 6 & had 2 Did Not Plays. We finished 3 rd (those 2 non games, one of which for Covid against the bottom side away, proving costly) &were defeated away in the Preliminary Final by rain &the eventual premiers. We had some great wins, as mentioned, but also some hard losses &narrow ones too, with Beaumaris away (6 runs) & the first round away (against Mordialloc by one wicket.) The losses I took hard & take full responsibility for, but were also due to different factors (low numbers, poor batting, poor bowling, poor captaincy &some bad luck!) One of my best calls of the year was in that first game giving the experience & opportunity to & backing two U/16 boys ( Luke Sullivan &Cory Cater) to bowl out the last 8 overs of the innings. Whilst we lost the game by one wicket, I was full of praise for their efforts &how they bowled, & we all learnt a lot. (These two boys having really good seasons, with them playing 4ths &even 3rds Premier Cricket! Well done boys!) There were some great bowling performances this season, with Seb Anderson 6/9 &Kovid Katta 5/13 our stand outs, & with all of our bowlers toiling hard & bowling pretty well. Our batting was good at times through the year, with 4 players posting scores above 50 (Seamus McIlroy, Cory Cater, James Vakis & Ishpreet Singh). There were plenty of 40’s, 30’s &starts too, with Kovid & Anarug Thakur having very consistent games & seasons with the bat. With our fielding, we were the best fielding side in our grade, getting quite a few direct-hit runouts, we were considered the benchmark & set high standards. I’d like to thank the leadership crew of my Vice Captain Riley Sheldon, Matt Miles, Porno (early on) Kovid & Blake Foreshew. We got as far as we did, (and we know we could’ve gone further) through your help, insights, nous, advice &ideas, &your leadership, application &efforts in the games & at training, & on & off the field. Congratulations to our award winners & to all of our club award winners, especially also to Sue Cater on winning the “Brian Hunt Best Club Person Award”. Speaking of Hunty, thank you so much for preparing a wicket for us to play on each week. To Pete Marshall, Al Manning & Jono Boyd for your coaching, Phil O’Meara & the selection team, especially to the best President in Premier Cricket Brett Sebire, the committee, Coxy, JR Noonan &Tommy Brain, & G Bung with the Social Media support, you all worked so hard this year keeping the club running & in making it a really good season under trying conditions &difficult times, thank you ALL (and to Sheeza) so much for your help, guidance &support all year! To all of the players, sponsors &supporters, thank you for making, what was such a difficult & memorable season, a more enjoyable one! P a g e 18 | 61
Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21 Finally, the 5 th XI will continue to be a development side, with the importance & main priority being the 4 Premier sides above us! The club will give players the opportunity for a game each week in the 5ths that have missed out in playing Premier Cricket. The captain will give the players all of the opportunities he can, they will be encouraged, monitored, appraised & then promoted due to consistent performances, & we continually will push & feed players into the 4ths & 3rds. BUT we, the 5ths, were left with a sour taste in our mouths at season’s end, & a fire still burns deep in our bellies! We have unfinished business, our aim is to get redemption by going a few steps further in Season 2021/2022 & hoisting up some silverware for the club. John Noonan Captain 5th XI P a g e 19 | 61

U16B- A successful merged side of 14 players from Kingston Hawthorn and Bayside Cricket Clubs that has been together for the last two seasons. Coached by Chris Sullivan and Stephen McMahan. They won 6 of their 11 matches drawing one and losing 4 to finish 4th on the ladder. They played their best game of the season beating Aspendale to make it into their first Grand Final unfortunately going down to Le Page. The U14B’s played their first season with a full side of Kingston Hawthorn players. They had to play in the Central B grade competition which is the most competitive of the B Grade competitions, this was another step up from what they have played before. The team coached by Chris Reeves and Andrew Hunter, played well together and had a lot of fun, their skills had noticeably improved with some great individual performances. They won 3 of their matches with some very close losses and improved in every game. U12d Gold Coached by Jake Ellen had 12 players for a competition of 9 a side. The team won 10 games losing only once. There were many outstanding performances during the season both batting and bowling. The team mainly top age U12’s in their second season of cricket are looking forward to a tougher competition in the U14b grade side next season. A special mention to young allrounder Jordy Ellen for winning the Junior Club Championship award. U12d Blue coached by Mark Davies also had 12 players for a competition of 9 a side. They were ecstatic to win the first game of the season and were able to grab another win towards the latter stages of the season. U12D BLUE REPORT Not available at the time of printing. Mark Davies. U12D GOLD REPORT Not available at the time of printing. Jake Ellen. U14B REPORT Over the past few seasons we have struggled to fully field a side without assistance (ie transient merger) from other clubs. Hence, it was quite a pleasant surprise for Andrew and myself when we realised we would have a full contingent to start the 2020/21 season. We were quietly optimistic about our season ahead and being placed in the 'B' section, we knew we were going to be facing some strong opposition. In round 3 we faced off with Bentleigh 3 and unfortunately went down in a nail biter by just 1 run! (8-95 v 5-96) Some individual performances to acknowledge include 41* not out to Josh White (notching his retirement with a massive 6 over mid wicket), 13 runs to both Lincoln Mackenzie and Will Reeves, and a very tidy 1/2 off 2.0 overs from Will Hunter. This strong form continued into Rd 4 where we successfully notched up our first win for the season, defeating Beaumaris 2 (3- 105 v 6-96). Significant contributions with the willow from Noah Ryan (41* not out) and Max Sullivan (19 runs), and with the ball 2 wickets each to Alex Fenech (2/17) and Lachlan Sullivan (2/10). In Rd 6 we also put in a super team performance to beat East Sandringham2 by 38 runs. Alex Fenech was again on fire with the ball in hand (4/15 off 4 overs) and was well supported in the field by his 'wickie', Will Reeves, taking 4 catches and being involved in 1 run out. From a batting perspective, there were multiple contributors and it was pleasing to see confidence and self belief growing with more time spent in the middle, this displayed no more so than Lachie Sullivan (13 runs) and Hunter Lynch (16* not out). The final round also stands out as our most comprehensive win for the season, overcoming the 1 run defeat in Rd 3 against Bentleigh (and extreme hot and windy conditions), to have their measure and win. They made 6-83, with our 'work in progress leggie' Lachie Sullivan claiming 3/13, and the 'outswing king' Will Hunter claiming 3/8. We passed their score only 12 overs in and 3 wickets down, and given the trying conditions were happy to call it a day. Josh McInerney saved his best batting until the last round, starting timidly and then growing in confidence with each run, making 26* not out (and well and truly on his way to retiring as well). Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21 As it turns out, we finished the season in 8th position (out of 10), however, had we batted on in the last round, we would have surpassed Beaumaris on percentage and comfortably claimed 7th position. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Tom 'Spizz-a-lish', Lachie Mulcahy and Xavier Beck, all of whom are valuable members of the team, and are always attentive and eager to improve with every training session. The bottom age fellas (Lachie, Lincoln and Xavier) will retain their positions in u14's again next season, and I have no doubt they will be great role models for the younger kids and lead the way exceptionally. Although it is a team game, there were some individual awards to acknowledge: Batting Award: Josh White (168 runs, avg 28) Bowling Award: Josh McInerney (8 wickets, avg 7.88) Fielding Award: Will Reeves (9 catches, 2 stumpings as WK) Coaches Award: Hunter Lynch On behalf of Andrew and myself, I would like to commend the boys on their efforts this season. They are an extremely coachable and impressionable group of young men, and we have thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie and banter displayed both on and off the field. A final thank you to all parents who happily volunteered their time to score, assist with set-up and simply be there to support the team. And of course, the junior cricket club would not be where it is today without the outstanding efforts of its co- ordinator, Sue Cater. Thank you Sue ! We're looking forward to the 2021/22 season, fingers crossed our kids can get out there and enjoy what is a fabulous team game - without any restrictions! Go Hawks Chris Reeves and Andrew Hunter. U16B REPORT The U/16’s took to the field with a very similar team to last season as a merged side with Bayside. With 13 players to choose we had to sit two players out each week however everyone took it in their stride and there were never any complaints. With Covid resulting in a late start to the season, the league mandated that all games would be one day fixtures of 20 overs a side. With the previous season having not gone our way in terms of wash outs or heat affected games, it was important to try and get away to a good start. And to the boy’s credit they did exactly that, with one of our best performances of the year in Rd 1 where we made a competitive 4/109 and then rolled Le Page Park for 60 in under 15 overs. At the Christmas break, the boys were sitting equal top of the ladder having only lost one game in the first five matches - a close loss to Aspendale at home. The restart after Christmas saw us continue where we left off with 3 great wins before Covid struck at the start of February that resulted in a lost round. The boys stumbled a little losing twice to Mordialloc in the space of 3 days (quirk of the SECA draw) before taking on St Brigids/St Louis in the final round where a win would guarantee finals and a loss would leave us fighting for 4th spot. In a tight game the boys went down by 5 runs but fortunately we still managed to scrape into 4th by 0.06%. Despite going into finals having dropped our last 3 games of the season, both coaches and players knew that our best was still definitely good enough against any of the finalists. The semi final proved exactly that, with what was the best game the group had played in the two years of being a merged side. Taking on the top side Aspendale at their home ground, we rattled off 3/106 in our 20 overs with Cory and Kane making great contributions. In reply Aspendale were on the ropes from the first over and a great team performance saw us roll them for 70. It was fitting reward for the boys, resulting in (for the Kingston Hawks boys at least) their first grand final since starting juniors over 6 years ago. In the grand final we were up against Le Page Park at their home ground, the side we had convincingly beaten way back in Rd 1. In what was a complete reversal of that game, unfortunately we were on the back foot from the first ball and a continuous loss of wickets saw us at one stage stumble to 6/9. A great knock from Johnny at the end saw us scramble to 82 off our 20 overs. Unfortunately we couldn’t replicate our bowling effort from the semi final and they eventually passed us in the 13th over.
