Issue TwenTy 2020 PerehITanga rua Tekau Worship | Whānau | Mission Loving God | Loving Each Other | Loving One Another Kia koutou e te whānau, ‘As ministers our greatest temptation is towards too many words. They weaken our faith and make us lukewarm. Silence is a sacred discipline, a guard of the Holy Spirit’ - Henri Nouwen Just breathe. There can be a simplicity to this life. We eat, sleep, work, play. We all see these things in a different order in terms of priority. For me, sleep has been a precious commodity and eating is just something that I love (alongside coffee...). Just breathe. We so easily get caught up in the ‘doing’ of life. There is much mahi (work) that needs to be done. Just breathe. Work is essential, as is sleeping, eating and playing. The question I’ve been grappling with is how do I ‘be’. Life is about ‘being’ and not so much about the ‘doing’. Just breathe.
Last week I had the opportunity to get away and have space to Breathe. It was glorious. It was precious to have the time and space for this. But it is not our everyday reality. Everyday reality so quickly becomes bustle. Can we slow-down enough to realise the unhealthy nature of this? Just breathe. The next series we are moving towards is entitled ‘Healthy Spirituality’. What does healthy spirituality look like? How can we cultivate practices that grow our inner world or sacred spaces. Just breathe. Life can become a trap. Just breathe. My challenge is to learn to allow silence and space for God to speak. Take the time to ‘Be’. Listen to what Wairua Tapu is saying. We can’t listen in the hustle and madness of our everyday. It requires discipline to stop. Just breathe. What does this mean for us as a community? What rhythms do we need in our everyday to enable and encourage silence and reflection? In prayer, are we allowing the Lord to speak to us? Take some time this week to ‘Be Still’. Practice silence and the art of Being. Slow down.... Just breathe. Much Aroha! All welcome, nau mai haere mai!
