WELCOME Year 12 is one of the most significant transition periods in a young person’s life. It is also special time for families and the School community who share the students’ journey. As Senior Students, who lead St Hilda’s, the girls have many responsibilities and privileges. Year 12 girls will be instrumental in leading and supporting the cocurricular program. In doing so they set the tone for a School that embodies excellence, respect, inclusion and 4 justice. Year 12s are the foundation of House spirit and coordinate many House activities including 3 Interhouse sport, Arts Festival and House quizzes. They will continue to mentor their House Sister and act as important role models for the Year 8s. The Class of 2021 will also lead St Hilda’s in IGSSA sports, arts, drama, music and the expansive range of Senior School clubs and committees. As an outward sign of their leadership status, the girls wear a Year 12 tie and jumper. The School, in consultation with the students also organise a leavers jumper to be worn at key events and outside of school. The St Hilda’s academic program includes Semester 1 Examinations in Term 2 and Mock Examinations at the end of Term 3. A Parent/Teacher Progress report is followed by a meeting at the end of Term 1, a full course report in Term 2 and a statement of results in Term 4. SEQTA Engage is a vital tool for parents to track their daughter’s assessment results for each course. Students who are tertiary bound will be informed of the courses available across a variety of tertiary institutions and the scholarships on offer. They will also be guided through the tertiary application process. The Year 12 Pastoral Care Program focuses on supporting students as they navigate Year 12 and preparing them for life beyond St Hilda’s. Through the program students are encouraged to maintain positive relationships with their peers and families, and to prioritise their physical and mental health. Year 12 Tutors also work closely with the cohort to promote the social and emotional wellbeing of each student. This year there will be many special events to celebrate the girls’ final year at St Hilda’s. These occasions will provide an opportunity to recognise personal excellence, acknowledge the girls’ contribution to the School and farewell the Class of 2021. I look forward to sharing the year with the girls and their families. Craig Doyle Head of Year 12
YEAR 12 EVENTS 2021 PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS Year 12 Parent/Teacher interviews will be held on Monday 15 March prior to the Term 1 progress reports. The evening is an excellent opportunity for parents to meet with staff to gain specific feedback on how their daughters are progressing in each course. Interviews can be booked online. Boarding families will be phoned to discuss their girl’s progress, if parents are unable to attend. MOTHER DAUGHTER BRUNCH The Mother Daughter Brunch provides an opportunity for our Year 12 Mothers and daughters to spend time together in a relaxed setting. Students are most welcome to attend with an aunt, grandmother or other special person 5 in their lives. They are also welcome to attend on their own. YEAR 12 STUDENT INFORMATION 2021 Information about tickets will be emailed from the School Development office. ARTS FESTIVAL Arts Festival events occur throughout Term 1 and culminates on Thursday 1 April. House Choirs are organised by Year 12 students and includes every girl from Year 7 to Year 12. Performances will be held on Friday 19 February in the PAC. On Thursday 1 April the day will begin with the annual Fancy Dress Parade. Dress themes will be decided by the Year 12 leaders. The parade will be followed by Year 12 girls leading the way in several events including Group Dance, Group Pop, Group Spoken and Year 7 Lip Sync.
FATHER DAUGHTER DINNER Thursday 19 August is a very special evening celebrated at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle from 7.30pm – 10.30pm. Students may bring an uncle, grandfather or other special person in their lives. Girls are also most welcome to attend on their own. Invitations will be sent home with all details closer to the date. CONCERTO and MUSIC ASSEMBLY Saturday 4 September showcases our amazingly talented Year 12 musicians. All students are given the opportunity to perform as soloists accompanied by our extremely talented musical groups. This event is held in the PAC and is an outstanding opportunity to appreciate the high calibre of music achieved by our girls. Information on how to purchase tickets will be explained in the newsletter closer to the date. The Music Assembly to celebrate the depth of musical talents at St Hilda’s will be held on Friday 3 September. 6 YEAR 12 BOARDERS’ FAREWELL DINNER The Year 12 Boarders’ Farewell Dinner is a special boarding evening held on Wednesday 13 October. This dinner provides an opportunity for celebration and appreciation of the time shared together. It is a time for the girls to take a trip down memory lane where fun and happy moments are relived, a meal is enjoyed and emotional speeches are delivered. The Year 12s enjoy looking back at the memories created in this special St Hilda’s Boarding ‘sisterhood’ while looking forward to the next chapter. JUNIOR SCHOOL LUNCH All Year 12 students that attended the Junior School are invited to attend a lunch with Junior School staff on Monday 13 September. This is a lovely occasion to reconnect with some of their old teachers and return to where their St Hilda’s journey began.
SPORTS ASSEMBLY Assembly on Friday 15 October allows the students involved in IGSSA sport to be acknowledged for their contribution to the School. Our sporting program provides all girls with the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports and fitness clubs and this event allows them to be congratulated on their commitment. 7 The Sports Assembly is also a time for St Hilda’s to welcome girls into the 24s or 30s Club. The Clubs are to recognise those athletes who participated in more than 24 or 30 IGSSA YEAR 12 STUDENT INFORMATION 2021 sports from Year 7 onwards. Students who represent Western Australia or Australia in their chosen sport are also congratulated. Finally, our overall Captains and Vice Captains (senior girls selected to lead each IGSSA sport during respective seasons from Term 4 2020 to Term 3 2021) are acknowledged, as are pennant-winning teams. SCHOOL PRODUCTION This year the School Production is ‘Legally Blonde and the first of three performances begins on Friday 18 June. Many Year 12 students are involved in both the cast, crew and band. This is a large commitment for the students and a highlight for many. HOUSE SISTERS PROGRAM In Year 11, the Class of 2021 were paired with a Year 7 House Sister to help support younger students begin their Senior School journey and to develop leadership skills amongst the older students. The Program enhanced unity between the year groups and broadened students’ support systems. It also gave the Year 11s an opportunity to practice empathy and understanding. This year the Class of 2021 will continue to meet and mentor their House Sisters.
FAREWELL YEAR 12 GRADUATION and AWARDS CEREMONY The Graduation and Awards Ceremony will be held in the JSPAC on Tuesday 30 November, 8 9.00-11.00am. The occasion formally congratulates all Year 12s on their graduation from St Hilda’s and acknowledges academic excellence and students will be welcomed to the Old Scholars Association. Since 1931 we have been celebrating the life of our patron Saint Hilda with a special Eucharist at St George’s Cathedral.
YEAR 12 ST HILDA’S EXTRAS COMMON ROOM The Year 12 Common Room is a fantastic space for the students to retreat. Here the girls have the privilege of being able to access a fridge, microwaves, grilled sandwich machines and a kettle. They also have access to their own photocopier, inbuilt speakers for music, charging locations for laptops and a variety of seating. A Year 12 student committee is responsible for coordinating the maintenance of the space and liaising with the Head of Year. FITNESS CENTRE PRIVILEGE Year 12 students are able to use the fitness centre before school, during study periods and after school if it is not being used for Physical Education classes. Girls can collect a permission letter from the PE Department and are required to have one introductory session to explain how to use all equipment. After this they are free to use it anytime as long as they are with one other student, sign in and bring a towel and water bottle with them. 9 GILL STREET CAFE YEAR 12 STUDENT INFORMATION 2021 Following the Semester 1 Examinations Year 12s are given permission to walk to Gill Street Café during study periods, recess and lunchtime. Students are expected to sign out before leaving campus and sign back in as soon as they return. They must wear the correct uniform, including blazer. We trust that the Year 12s will follow these guidelines and hope that they enjoy this special privilege. PRIVATE STUDY All students in Term 3 will undertake one period of private study instead of sport to assist them in preparation for their examinations. Girls who study six courses do not have extra private study periods but those who have elected to study less courses will be able to work in the library during these non-contact periods. They will need to get their names marked off as they enter the library or common room and work quietly to utilise this time. DRIVING TO SCHOOL Year 12 students with extenuating circumstances may apply to the Director of Senior School for special permission to drive to and from school. Students who drive to school may not park on campus as there is not enough parking space and there are several rules girls will need to follow to be granted permission, including not accessing their cars during the school day and never having other students in their car.
